As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is a unique tire if you’d like to combine smooth and quiet driving with sporty steering. Due to its asymmetrical pattern and full-depth sipes, its wet and light snow performances are quite impressive. Yet, this is a non-3PMSF tire. Its winter performance changes depending on how cold the weather is. On the other hand, Pirelli P7 AS Plus is one of the longest-lasting tires on the market. Besides that, it’s a good option if you’re looking for better fuel consumption.

Dry Performance

The dry performance of grand touring all-season tires is generally near perfect.

Dry traction is mostly related to the rubber amount of on the ground. Since we’re talking about the all-season tires, the amount should be high anyway.

In my point of view, discussing traction is kinda unnecessary for this section. Even the cheapest all-season in the market will provide a decent amount of dry traction.

However, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 has one unique feature that put it forward. Large outboard shoulder blocks.

The easiest way to increase the rubber amount on the ground is by expanding shoulder width (think about the huge shoulder blocks of tracking tires).

So, that’s what Pirelli does. Compared to an older version, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 has wider shoulder blocks. Hence, better dry performance. Especially for relatively aggressive drivers.

Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 provides excellent dry performance. Even aggressive drivers will feel like driving performance tires.

Wet Performance

All-season tires are built to offer year-round performance. However, sometimes they fail on wet performance.

Well, there are two reasons behind it.

The first one is tread life. If you’re making an all-season tire, it should last longer. Otherwise, using an all-season tire doesn’t make sense. For this reason, using a stiff compound is a must and it decreases the wet grip.

The second one is fuel efficiency. To avoid the stiffness of the compound, using notches and sipes on the tread is the best way. Yet, these dudes decrease the rolling resistance and increase fuel consumption.

Even though manufacturers optimize these two very well, it isn’t mean that they have the best-wet performance.

To achieve perfection, they should also handle hydroplaning resistance.

I know it’s getting complicated. Let me explain these two in two different sections.

Wet Traction

The easiest way to evaluate wet traction is by checking the UTQG rating.

The UTQH rating is actually the universal way of defining compound features. Since manufacturers use different compounds of different sizes, they can differ from size to size.

For instance, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 has two different UTQG ratings. 740 AA and 800 AA.

While 3-digit numbers explain the stiffness of the compound, the first letter stands for wet traction and the second one stands for heat resistance.

So, even though Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 has an ‘A’ grade regarding wet traction, this test isn’t applicable for today’s vehicles because most vehicle has anti-locked brakes and this test performs on locked brakes.

So, in this case, the ‘A’ grade actually means the tire sipes provide enough traction for a decent wet grip. Yet, this isn’t enough.

For decent wet traction, my limit UTQG number is actually 700.

Since Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3’s 740-800, I can confidently say that Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 will have traction issues on cold days. However, if you’re living in warm conditions, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is a great option for you.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is basically the water evacuation capability of the tire.

It’s crucial because this feature is what helps you to don’t lose control while going through the puddles. Especially if you’re driving fast.

In this case, open shoulder blocks and wide circumferential grooves work best.

Due to 4 circumferential groove designs and open shoulder blocks, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 provides trustworthy hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

Due to its shoulder-biting edges, Pirelli P7 AS Plus can offer loose ground traction which makes it usable on deep snow and slush

The winter performance of all-season tires isn’t something to trust.

Unlike most people think, the compound of all-season tires loses grip performance below 7 Celcius degrees (at or below 40º F).

So, in this case, you should know that if the tire doesn’t have 3PMSF, expecting decent winter performance is a bit meanless.

Regarding Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 things are quite the same.

First of all, Pirelli P7 AS Plus has an asymmetrical pattern that is notched vertically and horizontally. In fact, that’s why it has an ‘A’ grade UTQG rating regarding traction.

For this reason, its light snow performance is decent. Though worth reminding, this tire can get you out of unexpected situations. However, for instance, if you’ll wake up on a snowy and cold day, you should warm these tires up for decent traction.

Regarding deep snow traction, I like the wide and blocky shoulder blocks, yet, tread depth is key out here. If you see deep snow often, I don’t recommend this tire.

Regarding ice, I think Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is one step ahead of the competition because of its compact pattern. Yet, still not a tire for ice usage.

In summary, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 isn’t a dedicated winter tire. Yet, it’s good enough to solve unexpected situations.

Longevity

Longevity is the biggest improvement of this tire.

Pirelli was pretty happy with the traction performance of the Pirelli P7 All Season Plus 2. Yet, due to its highly notched pattern, this tire is wearing quickly if you’re an aggressive driver.

So, that Pirelli made out here is quite simple. They keep the working pattern and increase the compound stiffness.

Increase compound stiffness, decrease the uneven wearing and actually wearing rating.

Due to its stiff compound, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is one of the longest-lasting tires in its segment. I strongly recommend it if longevity is your priority.

Warranty

  • Pirelli offers 70,000 miles and an unlimited-time treadwear warranty for Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3. An unlimited time expression is crucial in this case. It actually means they believe in their mileage warranty.
  • Pirelli offers a uniformity warranty for the first 2/32” of wear. That means in case of any uneven wearing, you can get new ones for free.
  • Pirelli offer 30 days of trial for Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3

Handling

The handling capability of grand touring all-season tires is reliable. Especially for premium brands like Pirelli.

Handling can be evaluated under two different sections. Cornering stability and steering response.

Since these tires are generally used on relatively lightweight vehicles, handling generally isn’t an issue.

Let’s evaluate these two features one by one.

Steering Response

Quick steering response is the key to a sporty driving feeling.

In fact, I think that sport driving feeling is one of Pirelli’s goals for this tire.

Well, this generally isn’t something to pay attention to for grand touring all-season tires. However, I think there is a good market catch out here.

Most people want long-lasting rubber and a sporty driving feeling. Especially for these sizes. 

So, what does Pirelli do to achieve this?

In this case, the wide and robust shoulder blocks of the Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 work perfectly. Besides that, this tire has a stiff compound which is great for a quick steering response.

If we were talking about fluffy compound tires like Vredestein HiTrac All Season, the relatively blocky center rib could be an issue. Yet, this stiffness level of the compound doesn’t flex that much. So, no issue at all.

Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 provides unique responsiveness. Strongly recommend it for aggressive drivers.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is mostly related to the inner structure.

In this case, strong sidewalls and robust shoulder blocks work perfectly.

Pirelli P7 All Season Plus 2 was an efficiency-oriented tire. For this reason, it was lightweight. Yet, some people have sidewall issues with this tire which is kinda prof of a weak internal structure.

So, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is different than the previous version.

First of all, its compound is stiffer and it has wider shoulder blocks.

Well, these two could negatively affect the cornering stability if the sidewall of the tires isn’t durable and stiff enough. 

In this case, Pirelli uses polyimide reinforcement ply that goes from bead to bead. While this ply helps the tire to keep its shape at high speeds, it also strengthens sidewalls.

Due to its unique internal structure, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 offers perfect cornering stability. For this reason, it’s a good option for SUV and CUV owners.

Riding Comfort

Riding comfort is mostly related to the inner structure and tread pattern.

So, grand touring all-season tires generally offer a smooth ride because of their rib-type patterns.

Pirelli P7 AS Plus has an asymmetrical rib-type pattern. Depending on the asymmetrical level, these tires could offer a rough ride. However, regarding Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3, things are a bit different.

If you check the Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 closely, you can see that its outer and inner shoulder block design is different. Besides increasing handling capability, this design actually works regarding comfort.

Basically, increasing the rubber amount on the ground works best also in this case. However, the real game changer is its inner structure.

The inner structure of the Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 consists of one extra single-ply polyester casing. This ply covers the tire’s inner structure from bead to bead and absorbs most of the road dumb.

Due to its extra polyester casing and shoulder block design, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is one of the most smooth tires on the market.

Road Noise

Road noise is caused by the airflow inside the tire tread.

The tires which have angled notches tend to make more noise. For this reason, most grand touring tire offers a deaf ride.

Regarding Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3, things are better.

  • First of all, just like the off-road tires, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 has interlocked center rib which is excellent for a quiet ride because the starting point of airflow is generally the center section.
  • Secondly, its shoulder section may be blocky, though, if you can check closely, you can clearly see the outer circumferential grooves are halfway closed on the shoulder side. This actually breaks the airflow and reduces road noise significantly.
  • Since Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 doesn’t mark with 3PMSF and its winter performance is limited, this tire doesn’t need that much aggressive pattern.

Because of the above reasons, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is quiet as a church mouse.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is related to rolling resistance. Lower rolling resistance means better MPG.

So, in fact, all-season tires without 3PMSF are the best option in this case.

Even though these tires have tons of sipes on them, their stiff compound decreases the rolling resistance significantly.

Since I’ve already mentioned the relatively soft design compared to its competitors. This is a huge advantage. Besides that Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3’s UTQG rating is 800-740 which means the tire has a way much stiff compound than its competitors.

According to the above information, I can confidently say that Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is alpha plus option if efficiency is your priority.

Conclusion

Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 is an all-round tire that is a great option for mostly warm regions. Due to its stiff compound, it also performs perfectly on SUVs and as well as large SUVs.

Since Laufenn focuses on fuel efficiency in this tire, they use fewer sipes on this tire. Hence, its wet and winter performances are poor below 7 Celcius degrees (at or below 40º F). However, if you’re living in a warm region, these tires are a great option for you. Laufenn S Fit AS lasts long. Yet, due to its variable shoulder block design, it’s slightly noisy at low speeds but deaf at high speeds.

Dry Traction

First of all, I would like to share my opinion about UHP tires. They’re just all-season tires that have stronger sidewalls. That’s it. In my point of view, the all-season tire concept is totally the opposite of the performance tire concept. For sure, brands like Michelin, Bridgestone, and Continental can optimize these tires perfectly. Yet, these are just all-season tires that offer higher speed ratings and cornering stability. That’s it.

Why I’m talking about them in this section? Because if your expectations are racing or great handling on high velocity, you’re in the wrong place. You need a slick summer performance tire.

On the other hand, besides the longevity, if you just like the appearance and your expectations are just safety while driving slightly aggressively, let’s move on!

Laufen S Fit AS’s compound is labeled with A-rating regarding traction. So, its traction capability is great.

Regarding dry traction, putting as much rubber on the ground works best. Besides that, compound stiffness is the game-changer. Luckily, Laufen S Fit AS has a soft compound like every other ultra-high-performance tire(500 UTQG rating).

Unlike most UHP tires, Laufen S Fit AS doesn’t have a blocky pattern which increases the rubber on the ground. For this reason, I can confidently say that even if you’re changing from all-season tires, you’ll not notice any decrease in dry traction.

Laufen S Fit AS offers great dry traction.

Handling

The handling capability of UHP all-season tires is crucial.

The handling capability of the tires can be evaluated under two different features.

The first one is responsiveness, also known as steering response.

The second one is cornering stability. This kinda shows your tire’s ability to stay stable under high speeds.

Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Steering Response

Steering response is related to compound stiffness and tread design.

Well, I have to admit that, UHP all-season tires have an advantage out here. All-season performance tires have a stiff compound for performance tires. Hence, these tires flex less and provide a quicker steering response.

In this case, the real game changer is the center rib design. Manufacturers mostly keep center ribs robust and solid. Just like Laufen S Fit AS has.

Moreover, Laufen S Fit AS’s ribs are connected to the tire bars that reduce the flex and accelerating the steering response. Moreover, Laufen S Fit AS’s tread depth is lower than the competition. It’s a bad omen for tread life but increases the responsiveness significantly, especially for the tires that have a fluffy compound.

Even though these are enough for a decent steering response, responsiveness is also highly related to cornering stability.

I can confidently say that Laufen S Fit AS offers a trustworthy steering response, though, I’ll share a couple of extra pieces of information in the below section.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is mostly related to the inner structure. Hence, most performance tires have a decent record.

In that case, two steel belt construction works best. For this reason, it has a common use. Well, Laufenn uses the same design for S Fit AS also. However, the X factor out here is different.

Laufen uses a jointless nylon cap that fully covers the steel belts and meets with a high-hardness bead filler that reduces the flex and offers better cornering stability.

Laufen S Fit AS offers reliable cornering stability. That feature makes it a good option for SUVs and CUVs that puts performance over the tread life.

Wet Performance

This section is actually the reason why I don’t like all-season performance tires.

The wet performance requires a fluffy compound or a notched rubber. Though, compounds do most of the work.

In fact, summer tires work better on wet because of this reason. The fluffy compound offers a better grip on wet.

The above reasons are important for wet traction. Yet, hydroplaning resistance is another feature that is highly crucial for high-speed driving.

Let’s move on and talk about them one by one.

Wet Traction

Wet traction is related the compound stiffness and there’s a solid way to understand it.

Checking UTQH rating. Laufenn S Fit AS has a 500 AA UTQG rating. The first A out here stands for the wet traction.

In this case, what you have to pay attention to is in which conditions the above sentence is valid. Above 7 Celcius (44.6° Fahrenheit) degrees.

If the tire doesn’t have 3PMSF, its compound sometimes can lose grip capability. Well, LAufenn S Fit AS doesn’t have.

In order to avoid this, manufacturers use highly notched rubber on performance all-season tires. However, Laufen S Fit AS isn’t one of these tires.

Laufenn S Fit AS has big shoulder blocks and a continuous rib design that increase the comfort level but decreases the biting edge intensity, hence, slippery ground grip.

Laufen S Fit AS offers decent wet traction for warm regions. However, under 7 Celcius degrees, it loses grip capability significantly.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is basically water throwing-out capability of the tire.

If the water stays inside the tread, the tire tends to lose connection with the ground. This doesn’t happen on a smooth road. Yet, you probably feel the flotation feeling while going through the puddles.

Performance tires have wider tread patterns. For this reason, they tend to hydroplane.

In order to avoid it, there are two different methods.

The first one is using circumferential grooves. Laufen S Fit AS has a 3-rib design, for this reason, it has 4 circumferential grooves which is an efficient number.

The second one is open shoulder blocks. Right here, manufacturers need to decide between riding comfort and hydroplaning resistance.

The big shoulder blocks and fewer open slot is disadvantage out here. Check the tread closely, one shoulder is supported with a small rib that increases the handling but decreases the hydroplaning resistance.

Laufen S Fit AS offers average hydroplaning. It handles the lower velocity but high-speed hydroplaning needs a better shoulder design.

Longevity

Laufenn S Fit AS’s tread design aims the longevity.

If you compare this tire with its competitors, you can clearly see that this one has a softer design.

It doesn’t have a blocky pattern like its competitors and its sipe and notches density is actually low.

These features decrease its slippery ground grip capability but decrease its rolling resistance significantly.

Since the tire has a low density of sipes, it offers satisfying tread life. However, its compound is slightly softer than the competition (500UTQG, premium brands use 560-600 for this segment). Well, in fact, that’s why this tire still can offer slippery ground performance.

Besides all of these, Laufenn is aware that even wearing is the key to long-lasting rubber. So, they use tie bars to decrease flexing between the ribs. For this reason, Laufen S Fit AS tends to wear evenly.

If you’re looking for a long-lasting rubber, Laufenn S Fit AS is a great option for you.

Winter Performance

Winter performance of performance tires is questionable.

Performance tires aren’t able to use 3PMSF compound because of wearing issues.

3PMSF compounds are fluffy and don’t lose their elasticity in freezing temperatures. However, they melt down on high-speed usage. Especially in warm weather.

Regarding Laufen S Fit AS, things are worse.

The premium brands in this category prefer a more aggressive and blocky design to improve grip capability. Unfortunately, Laufen S Fit AS’s design is insufficient for winter performance.

I don’t recommend this tire for winter usage.

Riding Comfort

L is the fluffiest block while 5L is a stiffest block

It seems like riding comfort is the priority of Laufen S Fit AS.

Unlike its successors, Laufen S Fit AS has a less blocky compound.

However, the inner structure does most of the work in this case.

So, riding comfort is related to uniformity. For this reason, performance tires generally fail on it. These tires have a fluffy compound but they have durable and solid shoulder blocks and sidewalls. 

Things are quite the same for Laufen S Fit AS, however, its shoulder block design creates a difference in this case.

Laufenn defines 5 different stiffness levels for Laufenn S Fit AS’s shoulder blocks. These blocks meet with the surface respectively. However, even though you drive at a constant speed, these blocks hit the surface with a different force because the tire is a circle and it has harmonic movements. So, optimizing the stiffness level of these blocks is a quiet smart move to make and it also decreases the noise level.

Due to its specific shoulder block design, Laufenn S Fit AS offers an exceedingly smooth drive.

Road Noise

You can see the wavy groove on the left side

If you’re looking for high-performance all-season tires, especially affordable ones, you probably don’t care about the road noise that much.

These tires are built to perform under high lateral forces. Hence, these tires have a strong sidewall and robust shoulder blocks.

So, before saying anything, I can confidently say that this one gonna be slightly louder than your all-season tire for sure.

First of all, the issue is manufacturer needs deep and wide notches to increase the traction capability of these tires. These deep and wide notches on the center section create some noise for sure.

However, the real issue is the wavy circumferential outer shoulder groove. The noise of all-season tires is mostly created by the airflow. So, these wavy sections increase the hydroplaning but also increase the noise level.

So, Laufenn uses a semi-rib near the wavy shoulder blocks. This semi-rib blocks the airflow and decreases the noise level. Yet, this can just slightly decrease it, can’t completely fix it.

If you’re buying this tire for high-speed driving, then it’s an extremely quiet tire, yet, I think that it’s noisier than all-season tires at lower speeds.

Fuel Efficiency

Laufenn S Fit AS is one of the lightest ultra-high performance all-season tires in the market which makes it a good option for a better MPG.

Besides that, just like I’ve mentioned before, Laufenn S Fit AS’s design isn’t blocky as its competitors. It might be bad for traction-related features but it’s great for smooth and quiet driving and fuel efficiency.

If fuel efficiency is your priority, Laufenn S Fit AS is one of the best ones you can get!

Laufenn S Fit AS is a great tire if you love driving aggressively but don’t wanna sacrifice the smooth driving experience of all-season tires. Even though it has pros and cons, in my point of view, it’s a great price/performance tire.

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Firestone Destination LE3 is an affordable highway all-season tire that provides a very satisfying level of smooth and quiet riding experience. This tire can handle wet and dry conditions with ease. However, its winter performance is limited to light snow. While Firestone Destination LE3 offers excellent handling, it is also a great option if you want better MPG. However, the longevity of the tire is slightly behind the competition for light trucks. Yet, it’s still a great option if you’re looking for an affordable option.

Handling

Highway all-season tires generally offer decent handling. Since these tires aren’t built for loose ground traction, they generally have a symmetrical pattern and rib-type design that improve the handling capability.

In addition to that, these tires are made for huge vehicles. Hence, durability is their priority.

For this reason, these tires have a stiff compound which increases handling capability in a good way.

Under these circumstances, it’s easy to say Firestone Destination LE3 offers decent handling. Yet, I would like to explain the reasons behind this.

In order to explain myself better, I prefer to divide this section into two.

Steering Response

Responsiveness is extremely important for highway all-season tires. These tires should have the capability to work under loaded conditions which include towing or hauling. Since responsiveness becomes vital under loaded conditions, responsiveness is a priority for highway all-season tires.

Things are quite the same for Firestone Destination LE3.

In this case, tread depth, compound stiffness, and pattern design are the game changers.

  • Higher tread depth decrease the steering response time. Firestone Destination LE3’s tread depth is lower than most of the highway all-season tires in the market.
  • Firestone Destination LE3 has a fluffier compound. Its UTQG rating is 700. Yet, 700 is a still good number for a decent steering response.
  • Firestone Destination LE3 has a relatively softer tread design. It has a rib-lug-type hybrid design like other highway all-season tires in the market. If you can check the placement of the center section lugs, you can clearly see that the main idea is interlocking these lugs for better steering response and handling.

Firestone Destination LE3 offers a satisfying steering response. If you’re an aggressive driver, it could be a good fit for you.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is related to the inner structure and it’s generally not an issue for highway all-season tires.

Firestone Destination LE3 has a durable inner structure that offers decent cornering stability.

In this case, the real game-changer is the extra nylon reinforcement. This reinforcement goes through the whole tire and its main duty is to keep the tire in shape while cornering at high speeds. Does it work? Absolutely.

As a result, if your priority is handling or satisfying on-road manners, I think Firestone Destination LE3 is one of the best you can get for this price level.

Riding Comfort

Riding comfort of highway all-season tires are also good because these are high-profile tires that have more air inside of the tire.

This might come a bit fancy but in fact, the air inside of the tread carries all the load. Hence, more air means a higher load index and a generally more comfortable ride.

Besides these natural advantages, Firestone Destination LE3’s design is slightly softer than its competitors. 

Firestone Destination LE3’s center section is more compact than the others. Besides that its lugs are interlocked which increases the comfort level significantly.

Due to its symmetrical pattern and relatively softer tread design, Firestone Destination LE3 provides a highly comfortable driving experience.

Road Noise

Road noise is where this tire shines due to its softer center section design.

Generally, highway all-season tires have highly sectional ribs that provide a comfortable but sometimes slightly noisy ride.

Firestone Destination LE3 is a bit different. Even though its tread also has lugs, these lugs are interlocked vertically and horizontally.

Due to its low void area center section and blocky but a bit fluffy shoulder blocks, Firestone Destination LE3 provides one of the quietest rides in the market.

Wet Performance

Wide circumferential grooves and open shoulder blocks increase hydroplaning resistance

The wet performance of highway all-season tires is generally better than all-terrain tires. This is because highway all-season tires put more rubber on the surface. In another saying, these tires have fewer void areas.

Wet performance has two different dimensions that are completely different than the others. In fact, at some point, these two totally need the opposite features.

While one of these two dimensions is wet traction and it’s related to compound stiffness and sipe density; the other one is hydroplaning resistance which is highly vital, especially under the downpour.

Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Wet Traction

As I’ve mentioned above, wet traction is related to compound stiffness and sipe density.

The easiest way to understand decent wet traction is by checking to UTQG rating.

UTQG rating contains one number and two letters after that. The first letter rates the wet traction. A is the highest rating, continues B, C…

In this case, my limit stiffness is 700 which highway all-season generally doesn’t match with.

Unlike other highway all-season tires, Firestone Destination LE3 meets this criterion. Its UTQG rating is 700 A B. Which means it also has A-rating wet traction and B-rating heat resistance. I’m going to talk about heat resistance in the longevity section.

On the other hand, maybe you realize that Firestone Destination LE3’s sipe density is lower than most highway all-season tires in the market. This is because its compound is fluffier and provides a better grip.

It seems like Firestone trying to make tires that can provide decent traction and maximum comfort level. I can confidently say that you’ll not have any issues regarding wet traction.

Firestone Destination LE3 provides excellent wet traction.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance basically the water evacuation capability of the tread.  It becomes vital, especially at high velocity and under the downpour.

While going through the puddle, if you break, you may feel the flotation feeling. That’s hydroplaning and actually, it can be extremely dangerous.

Luckily, highway all-season tires have relatively narrower patterns than all-terrain tires which decrease the floatation level.

More importantly, the priority of these tires doesn’t off-road traction. Hence, manufacturers can use a relatively softer tread design which helps them to increase hydroplaning resistance.

In this case, circumferential grooves and open shoulder blocks do most of the job.

Firestone Destination LE3’s symmetrical pattern contains 4 circumferential grooves. Besides that this tire has a blocky shoulder design that provides a lot of open shoulder slots.

Moreover, you can see the deep and angled notches at the center section of the tread. These notches provide two things. Vertical biting edges and water evacuation. The shape of the notches directs water in the center section to the shoulders or grooves.

Firestone Destination LE3 offers trustworthy hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

First of all, if someone saying great about any highway all-season tires’ winter performance is lying.

These tires are built for huge vehicles and their main duty is to provide durability and a decent level of handling.

Because of that, highway all-season tires have a stiff compound that can’t get the 3PMSF marking.

3PMSF marking is the severe snow rating of the tires’ compound. If the tire doesn’t have this label, that means the compound of the tire becomes relatively useless under 7 Celcius degrees.

The above statement is what is written in the books. Yet, technology’s developing rapidly. In the last 4-5 years, the tire compounds maybe can’t get the 3PMSF label but can handle at least freezing temperatures.

So, if I have to talk about Firestone Destination LE3, I think it can be an assertive competitor in this case.

I would like to explain this for 3 different conditions,

Light-Snow Traction

Light-snow traction is actually what you should expect from highway all-season tires.

Unlike most people think, this is the most dangerous snow type.

The light snow can easily merge with dust and dirt and become slush or muddy. Hence, sliding and spinning are highly expected in this kind of weather condition.

So, Firestone Destination LE3’s fluffy compound gets into the game again here. Due to its fluffy compound, Firestone Destination LE3 provides a decent level of grip.

Besides that, its sipes are full-depth and 3D which provides vertical and horizontal grip at the same time. This is very important for light-snow traction.

Due to its 3D-siped pattern and fluffy compound, Firestone Destination LE3 provides reliable light-snow traction.

Deep Snow Traction

You can actually call this one packed-snow traction.

Unlike most people who think positively, I think Firestone Destination LE3 isn’t a good tire for packed snow traction.

First of all, the tire has a lower tread depth. Which is highly important regarding loose ground traction.

Secondly, Destination LE3’s center section isn’t blocky to provide decent deep snow traction. I like deep notches and I’m sure they gonna work but it’s still too far away from dedicated winter tires.

Last but not least, soft compound again. It still increases the biting capability.

Firestone Destination LE3 isn’t a perfect deep-snow tire but it can take you out of unexpected situations.

Ice Traction

Highway all-season tires generally have similar performance on the ice.

Firestone Destination LE3 has a slight advantage in this case. Its compound is softer and it can put more rubber on the surface.

For this reason, Firestone Destination LE3 is a good option for icy surfaces. Yet, I still recommend using a dedicated winter tire at least on the ice.

Longevity

Longevity is actually the only feature that I have doubts about.

First of all, the soft compound is a disadvantage in this case.

Besides that, the tire has B-rated heat resistance which means it’s gonna wear more quickly than A-rated tires. For instance, Michelin Defender LTX M/S has A-rated heat resistance and an 800 UTQG rating.

On the other hand, a compact and less notched pattern is a huge advantage in this case. Besides that, Firestone Destination LE3 is one the lightest of its segment. The huge advantage regarding tread life.

In a summary, I think Firestone Destination LE3 provides great tread life for CUVs and SUVs. However, it can be only a price/performance tire for a pickup owner who is looking for the longest tread life.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is where this tire shines.

Due to its lightweight and relatively lower sipe density, I strongly believe that Firestone Destination LE3 is one of the most housewifely tires in the market.

Off-Road Performance

Angled center section notches provide a decent level of mild off-road traction

The off-road performance of highway all-season tires is meh.

In fact, the main duty of these tires isn’t loose ground traction.

They can handle off-road because they’re durable and they have plenty amount of void area to provide a decent level of light-duty off-road traction.

Mild off-road traction only contains gravel and dirt traction.

Firestone Destination LE3 can handle some mild off-road conditions but it’s slightly behind the competition due to its fluffy compound and compact pattern.

Dirt: Dirt traction is related to gripping capability. Firestone Destination LE3’s fluffy compound is an advantage in this case.

Gravel: Firestone Destination LE3 can provide a decent level of gravel traction. However, its fluffy compound will definitely wear faster

Mud: Depending on the depth of the mud, it can be useful. Yet, its shallow tread can’t have enough void area for decent mud traction. It can still take you out of unexpected situations

Sand: Softer designs work better on the sand. It’s gonna be fine.

In summary, Firestone Destination LE3 isn’t a tire to buy if off-road traction is your priority. Besides its low-rated heat resistance, it’s also a bit soft for a decent level of off-road traction. So, dirt & gravel is okay but I recommend keeping it only occasionally.

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus is one of the best run-flat tires for mostly warm and squishy regions. This tire offers a smooth but a bit noisy driving experience. While it performs perfectly in wet and dry conditions, its winter performance is limited to light snow traction. Even though Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus lasts longer than most run-flat tires, it’s not the best option if fuel efficiency is your priority.

NOTE: DriveGuard Plus run-flat tires are only recommended for vehicles that are equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system.

In case of any puncture, you can still use Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus 50 miles at 50 mph.

If you can keep the 15 Psi after the puncture, Bridgestone run-flat tires are repairable.

Run-Flat Technology

I generally don’t talk about this kind of thing in my articles but this tire is special for me.

Bridgestone is the originator of run-flat tires. For this reason, as a former Bridgestone engineer, I can confidently say that they don’t want to stop being the best run-flat tire manufacturer.

I personally found run-flat tires a bit fragile because of their extra stiff sidewalls.

So, the fragile part is caused by the stiffness difference between the tire shoulders and sidewalls. When this difference is too much, this causes too much force at some specific locations and if anything hit that spot, you have a new flat tire. But, run-flat, lol.

In this case, manufacturers have to decide something. They can fix this issue by using stiff shoulder blocks and sacrificing some of the good on-road manners (road noise, smooth driving), or they can use fluffier shoulder blocks and make the tire open to any damage.

Of course, they choose the second option but this one is different.

It seems like Bridgestone is keeping up with the idea behind the run-flat tires. Safety. So, they use stiff shoulder blocks on this tire.

In my point of view, Bridgestone Drive Guard Plus is gonna be announced as the best run-flat tire soon. It’s not going to be the most smooth or quiet one, it’s gonna be the most durable and trustworthy one for sure.

Handling

Since we’ve already talked about the stiff shoulder blocks, let’s move on with the handling.

Handling could be evaluated under two different dimensions. Steering response and cornering stability.

While the steering response is related to pattern design, regarding cornering stability, the stiff and durable shoulder blocks and sidewalls do most of the job.

Steering Response

Steering response generally is an issue of all-terrain or winter tires.

While winter tires offer slower steering response because of their fluffy compound, all-terrain tires have tons of void area on the tread, and this decrease the response time dramatically.

So, I think we all understand the crucial metrics out here. Stiff compound and compact tread.

The center rib on the tread plays a big role out here. Especially if the compound is soft. Luckily, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus has 640UTQG which is a highly acceptable number for a decent steering response. In fact, the number is higher than most all-season tires in the market which means Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus has a stiff compound.

If I’ve to come back to the center rib, a continuous and relatively less siped center rib works best in this case. Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus has neither. Yet, its stiff compound and compact pattern do the work.

Since Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus is only available on V, W, and H speed rates, compound stiffness is way much more important than continuous center rib.

Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus provides a satisfying steering response.

Cornering Stability

I’ve never seen someone complaining about the cornering stability of the run-flat tires.

Cornering stability is related to strong and solid internal structures. In this case, stiff shoulders and thick sidewalls do the most work.

I’ve already talked about the stiff shoulder blocks, regarding thick sidewalls, run-flat tires have a thick sidewall because of their nature.

The robust shoulder section stays stable while cornering, besides that, its tread compound is also stiff enough.

Wet Performance

Take a close look at its pattern, you can clearly see the extra sipes

The wet performance of all-season tires is generally good. But it is very important to divide the wet performance into two in this regard.

Hydroplaning resistance and wet traction.

While hydroplaning resistance is more important for aggressive drivers, wet traction is crucial if you have a bit softer driving habit.

Let’s analyze them one by one!

Wet Traction

Wet traction is mostly related to compound stiffness.

In this case, the best way to check this out is the UTQG rating.

UTQG rating has 3 digits numbers and two letters come after that. For instance, the UTQG rating of Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus is 640AA.

While 640 means that DriveGuard Plus lasts 6.4 times more than the test default tire, first A means it provides one of the best-wet traction. The second A means it resists heat perfectly. I’ll come back here in the longevity section.

So, according to my past experiences, if the tire has below 700 UTQG, it provides decent wet traction. But, this isn’t the only thing to take a look at.

When it comes to tread design, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus is perfectly optimized. You can clearly see the full-depth sipes and notches. These notches and sipes increase the amount of biting edges and provide better traction on slippery ground.

Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus could be on your list if wet traction is your priority. It’s great in this case.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is the key to safe wet driving. It’s simply the water evacuation capability of the tires’ tread. If the tread holds the water inside, at one point, while wheeling, the tire loses connection to the surface and you feel this floating feeling. Especially, if you ever bread on puddles, you probably experience this.

Well, this metric is crucial. Especially for aggressive drivers because the chance of hydroplaning correlates with velocity.

Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus has a trustworthy design in this case. It has 4 circumferential grooves that throw the water out. Better than that, it has an open shoulder block design that increases the water evacuation capability.

Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus offers reliable hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

Bridgestone even doesn't show the winter performance of this tire on their official website. Because this tire isn't built for winter.

The winter performance of all-season tires should be well analyzed.

Unlike most people think, these tires aren’t built for winter performance. In fact, they perform best above 7 Celcius (44.6 Fahrenheit) degrees.

This doesn’t mean these tires can’t perform on the snow but their maximum performance on the snow is average.

Still, dividing winter performance by three is the best way to analyze it.

Light-Snow Traction

Light-snow traction is the only metric you should look at if you’re going to buy all-season tires. I isolate all-weather tires in this case because all-weather tires are marked with 3PMSF which means their compound is resistant to cold weather. If you’d like to learn the difference between these two, I briefly talked about it in this article.

So, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus doesn’t have a 3PMSF marking. Hence, the maximum performance you should expect from this tire is average.

Well, luckily, it provides one of the best light snow traction among the competitors.

Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus’s divided ribs (looks like ribs but it contains lugs) and open shoulder blocks provide enough biting edges for light snow traction. Hence, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus is a trustworthy tire on light snow.

Deep-Snow Traction

All-season tires sometimes can handle deep snow. In this case, a bit aggressive pattern (lugged-type like Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus) works better.

In my point of view, tread depth is highly important regarding deep snow traction. Since Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus has a shallow tread, it has limited deep snow traction.

Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus doesn’t suitable for a long-range trip on the above 3-4” of snow. However, its C and E-shaped rib lugs create a good amount of horizontal and vertical biting edges.

Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus can take you out of occasional snow but this isn’t a winter-dedicated tire. Limiting winter time usage is best for your safety.

Ice Traction

Due to its stiff compound, I don’t recommend using this tire on ice.

If you need ice or slush traction, you need a dedicated winter tire, at least an all-weather tire.

Riding Comfort

After the radial tires entered the market, the comfort of the tires increased to a high level. Indeed, it’s really hard to find a rough-ride tire on the market.

So, while reading this section, please keep in mind that the worst tire in the market is average regarding riding comfort.

Internal structure does most of the work in this case.

Regarding internal structure, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus contains one nylon cap over the two-ply polyester casing. Hence, it absorbs the road forces very well. Besides that, it has relatively lower tread depth which is a huge advantage for a smooth driving experience.

I’m not going to say it’s the best one but for a run-flat tire, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus offers insane riding comfort.

Road Noise

So, the robust shoulders I love are the disadvantage in this case.

The noise reduction of the tires is related to the center section void area. For the all-season tires, less void area means rib type pattern.

Well, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus has a rib-type pattern but these ribs are divided into lugs. Moreover, as you can see its shoulder blocks are also dived into smaller blocks.

Due to its blocky pattern and robust shoulder blocks, Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus is a noisy tire in cold weather. The noise level will be acceptable in warm weather but below 7 Celcius degrees (at or below 40º F), I’m pretty sure you’ll need to turn up the volume of the radio a bit.

Longevity

Long-lasting isn’t a common feature for run-flat tires due to their heavier internal structure. So, expecting a long-lasting tread life is a bit of dreaminess.

Well, it has advantages and disadvantages in this case.

First of all, the tire has a blocky pattern which means it tends to wear unevenly. Yet, the stiff compound is an advantage in this case.

So, it has a stiff compound but it has tons of biting edges which creates too much force and the tire wears quickly. Besides, those run-flat tires are heavy tires. They wear faster than normal all-season tires.

I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be the strong contester between the run-flat all-season tires. Yet, if you prefer long-lasting rubber to safety, you better don’t prefer RFT (run-flat tires).

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is similar to longevity.

In this case, a stiff compound provides lower rolling resistance. However, as I’ve mentioned above, the notched pattern needs more power to roll, hence, this feature decreases the fuel efficiency a bit.

If you’re buying a run-flat tire, I suppose you don’t care too much about MPG.

For those who care, I strongly believe that this tire is one of the most fuel-efficient run-flat tires on the market. Its compound is far away stiff compared to competitors.

Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus is a jack of all trades but a master of wet driving and smooth riding.

This is rare because run-flat tires generally fail on one feature. Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus isn’t one of them.

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Bridgestone WeatherPeak is an excellent tire if you’d like to combine severe winter performance with cozy and quiet highway driving. Because of its angled blocks and open shoulder blocks, it’s a great option for squishy regions also. Moreover, Bridgestone WeatherPeak provides a stiff rubber that significantly increases the tread life. Though worth reminding, this is an all-weather tire. Compared to non-3PMSF all-season tires, it’s slightly noisy but way much more trustworthy.

Dry Performance

All-weather tires generally don’t have any issues with dry performance. Well, let’s say at least dry traction.

As the blocky pattern gives us a clue, Bridgestone WeatherPeak is a traction-oriented tire. Since dry traction is the easiest one to achieve, I can confidently say that you’ll not have any traction-related issues.

However, dry traction isn’t the only metric that defines dry performance. In this case, putting the steering response and cornering stability is a better approach.

Steering Response

Steering response is an issue that customers complain about sometimes. Since it’s mostly related to pattern design, it’s totally normal to experience it on all-weather tires.

All-weather tires need a blocky pattern to improve traction. In this case, there are two different approaches.

The first one is the V-shaped pattern approach. In this approach, the pattern doesn’t have too many sipes but has wide grooves that go through the shoulders. It’s totally okay for the traction but these tires are prone to making noise.

The second one is using an all-season tire pattern with more notches and blocks. Regarding on-road manners, these tires are better. However, when it comes to winter traction, especially heavy snow, these tires fail.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak is somewhere between these two. It has a blocky and notched pattern but its blocks are angled. So, it has a more vertical void area ratio than a horizontal void area ratio.

If I have to sum it up,

  • Bridgestone WeatherPeak has a 700 AA UTQG rating, this number is higher than most all-weather tires in the market and that means it has a stiffer compound. A stiffer compound works better regarding steering response.
  • In this case, the center rib plays a big role. Even though a continuous center rib works best, the angled center rib works as a one-piece while steering. So more compound on the ground, the more responsive drive you have

Cornering Stability

As a former Bridgestone engineer, I never heard someone complain about Bridgestone’s tire cornering stability.

Bridgestone’s primary goal is to provide a safe ride. So, they have a heart of glass about cornering stability. As a matter of fact, they’re okay with stiff riding complaints to reach necessary cornering stability.

Cornering stability is related to strong sidewalls and strong shoulder blocks.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak has a huge advantage in this case. Normally, tires have twin steel belts and a single polyester casing supporting these two. 

Bridgestone WeatherPeak has one extra reinforced nylon casing that covers the inner structure and helps the tire to keep its shape while driving at high speeds. Which we call better cornering stability.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak provides unique cornering stability. It’s a good choice for aggressive drivers.

Wet Performance

Wet performance has two different metrics. Wet traction and hydroplaning resistance. Believe me guys, wet performance is where Bridgestone WeatherPeak shines.

Regarding these two metrics,

  • Wet Traction: It’s important for starting, stopping, and accelerating
  • Hydroplaning Resistance: This is a crucial metric that keeps you alive at highspeed wet driving

Let’s move on and analyze the one by one.

Wet Traction

Wet traction is related to compound stiffness and the amount of biting edges.

These biting edges are created by the notches and sipes. Due to its tons of horizontal sipes and laterally angled blocks, Bridgestone WeatherPeak provides a decent amount of biting edges.

Regarding compound stiffness, as I said before, it has a 700 UTQG rating. Even though 700 is a max value to provide decent wet traction, near the 700, you’ll see an ‘ A-A’. While one of these A means it has the best-wet traction other one means it has the best heat resistance.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak provides trustworthy wet traction. Moreover, in my point of view, it beats the competition in this case.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is basically the water evacuation capability of the tire.

In this case, open shoulder blocks and circumferential grooves work best.

Regarding Bridgestone Weatherpeak, besides it has open shoulder blocks, it has 4 circumferential grooves which are fed by angled blocks.

The design is unique for hydroplaning resistance. It might be one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak offers great hydroplaning resistance. I highly recommend it if you’re living in a squishy region and love driving aggressively.

Winter Performance

When you see the tread, you probably ask yourself ‘Is it a winter tire?’. It’s not but its pattern is close to winter tire.

Winter performance can be evaluated under two different subtitles. Snow and ice performance.

Let’s dig into them and see what to expect from this tire.

Snow Performance

Light snow traction is similar to wet traction. Sipes and compound stiffness are crucial. Yet, it also needs a decent self-cleaning capability.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak has two different features that improve its snow performance significantly.

Snow vices and evolving inside the grooves sipes.

Inside the 4 circumferential grooves, you can see the evolving sipes that provide extra grip on light and deep snow, besides that, these sipes help the tread to clean itself.

Snow vices are located in the grooves of the center rib. They work as same with evolving sipes. Yet, they have one more duty. I’m going to talk about it in the longevity section.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak is a great tire if you need full-time snow traction.

Ice Performance

Bridgestone WeatherPeak’s ice performance isn’t as shiny as snow performance. But hey guys, this isn’t a dedicated winter tire. Not only this one but also other all-weather tires won’t provide you with the best ice performance.

However, Bridgestone Weatherpeak is a bit closer to winter tires. While its tons of biting edges provide a respectable amount of grip, its snow vices on the center rib enhance the grip in at least slush conditions.

This is not a tire for consistent ice driving, yet, I can confidently say that you’ll not do ice skating with these tires and they’ll take you out of the icy conditions with ease.

Riding Comfort

To be honest, I was quite suspicious about this tire’s comfort level when the first time sees its pattern. So, I made a quick chat with my friend in the tire business.

Here are the outputs I have,

  • The compound is stiff and the pattern is blocky but the inner groove sipes kinda interlocked the pattern. So, no comfort issues on the highway.
  • It’s a compact and durable tire. Vibration isn’t an issue at all.
  • I provide less jolt over the bumps, yet, slight rebounding might be something you get used to

If I have to sum it up, if you wanna combine winter performance with a decent comfort level, Bridgestone Weatherpeak is one of the best ones you can get from all-weather tires.

Road Noise

Unlike commercial photos show, Bridgestone WeatherPeak has a compact pattern

Road noise was also something, I was suspicious about. Before seeing the tire, I read a couple of reviews online that say the tire is noisy.

If you’re changing from the standard all-season tire, it’s totally expected to observe an increase in road noise. Yet, I was quite surprised when I see the tire.

First of all, manufacturers and dealers should change their photography styles. See the above picture, the void area of the tire doesn’t have that much.

However, its center rib is blocky. It could make some noise if the blocks don’t connect internally.

This feature provides the quiet as a church mouse driving on the highways. It makes slight noise on pavement but this is expected from the aggressive all-weather tire.

In my point of view, this is a well-balanced all-weather tire that provides one of the best rides on the highway. I can guarantee that you’ll hear the car noises you hadn’t heard before.

Longevity

All-weather tires have one of the stiffest compounds on the market. Hence, they’re known for their longevity.

So, since Bridgestone WeatherPeak has a 700 UTQG rating it has one of the stiffest for its segment. However, the real game changer out here is wearing capability.

Since it has a blocky pattern, unlike V-shaped all-weather tires, it provides less tread life. This is a truth.

On the other hand, this is a traction-focused tire and I strongly believe that Bridgestone made a great job regarding tread life.

In fact, this tire is developed by Firestone WeatherGrip. Bridgestone is the parent company of Firestone. Hence, they sometimes use Firestone as a test company.

Firestone WeatherGrip was also great in the snow conditions. In fact, I was calling it one of the best for severe winter conditions. Yet, its tread life was slightly behind the competition.

So, what Bridgestone did out here was simple. They know that uneven wearing was the real issue and they should stabilize the blocks for long-lasting rubber.

Well, they stiffer the compound, decrease the tread sipes amount and increase the amount of evolving sipes and snow vices. As a result, Bridgestone WeatherPeak wears evenly and provides way much better tread life than Firestone WeatherGrip.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak is a huge opportunity if you’re looking for a long-lasting tire.

Follow-up: Just a follow-up: I wonder if the V-rated Crosstour might be a nice middle-ground between that and the Weatherpeak? That happens to be the one that’s currently in stock at Costco.

Answer: Since you’re living in Long Island NY, Michelin Crossclimate 2 & Bridgestone WeatherPeak could be a bit severe for your conditions. As far as I know, December, January, and February are the months you need winter traction. 

Even though both tires will fit your conditions, I can’t see any reason to sacrifice a smooth ride. I suppose that the light-snow traction will be high enough for you. Here are my recommendations for you,

If you insist on all-weather tires,

  • Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady
  • Vredestein Quatrac Pro

If the 3PMSF doesn’t matter to you which I think is better,

  • Michelin Primacy Tour A/S
  • Vredestein HiTrack All-Season
