Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S Review

Updated: July 29, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a touring all-season tire that can be used on sedans, coupes, crossovers, and SUVs. Due to its vast product line(broadest of Uniroyal) and dirt-cheap price, it’s a popular selection inside the US. However, price and quality are generally proportional in the tire market. The excellent news, Tiger Paw Touring A/S is an exception. Yet, it isn’t a perfect tire. Hence, its defects may not meet your expectations. Let’s analyze this tire and see if it’s a good bet!

Continuous and thick center rib make this tire extremely communicative

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a trustworthy performance on wet and dry pavement. Moreover, due to its stiff compound, it’s a long-lasting tire. Furthermore, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a communitive tire and provides solid cornering capability(has unique cornering stability) while doesn’t sacrifice the quiet ride. However, it has a bit stiff ride and almost zero traction in winter if the tire doesn’t heat up.

Dry Performance

Even though dry performance is easy to achieve, some all-season touring tires face traction and handling issues due to the stiff compound of all-season tires.

So, evaluating dry performance under three different layers is the easiest way to expose it.

While dry traction is the last one to worry about, cornering stability and steering response sometimes stay behind if the manufacturer is obsessed with ride comfort and traction.

Let’s see them one by one.

Dry Traction

Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a great tire if you’re living in a hot climate. Even though it has a stiff all-season tread compound, its highly notched rubber has tons of biting edges.

Due to its perfectly optimized sipe density and compact tread, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides decent dry traction. You might feel a slight delay in acceleration before the tire heat up. Though, it’ll disappear after 10-15 minutes of driving.

Steering Response

Steering response is related to tread design and tire weight as well. Since the tire weight has a minor effect on it, tread design will be my evaluation point.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a symmetrical pattern that is an extremely good sign for a quick response time. Moreover, its continuous and robust center rib makes the most work in that case. Since this tire works as a pivot, it doesn’t flex too much and transmits the comments quicker. Hence, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a highly responsive tire.

Cornering Stability

Unlike steering response, cornering stability is completely related to the internal structure. If the tire doesn’t have tough sidewalls, there is no way that you don’t feel that floating feeling.

Since Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is mostly available in high profile sizes, most people think it has poor cornering stability. Well, that might be true if the Tiger Paw Touring A/S doesn’t have one of the strongest sidewalls in the market(in its category).

Due to its extra two-ply polyester sidewall, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides steady handling while cornering at high speeds.

Wet Performance

Symmetrical Pattern Design

Unlike common knowledge, the wet performance of tires should be evaluated under two different conditions. At high speed and low speed.

At low speed, the only thing you must need is traction. Hence,  one of our evaluating points is wet traction. Wet traction covers break, acceleration, and start.

On the other hand, at high speed, the tire gets warm and the compound becomes fluffier. Therefore, the grip capability of tire increase significantly. So, the only thing left to worry about is hydroplaning. Hence, hydroplaning is the second evaluating point.

Let’s examine them one by one.

Wet Traction

Wet traction is related to compound stiffness and the amount of biting edges.

In this case, zigzag shoulder sipes and angled center sipes work perfectly. Moreover, the tire is heavyweight compared to its competitors. Hence, it heats up a bit quicker and slicks the ground way much better. So, in that case, I was a bit worried about the beat fatigue due to an over-heated tire. Well, I have checked and see the tire has an ‘A’ temperature rating. For a double-checked, I’ve made some research on the web and didn’t see any bead issue. I was relieved.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a unique traction capability on wet pavement. I strongly recommend it.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is basically the water evacuation capability of the tire. In this case, if the tread holds the water at high speed, the tire loses contact with the surface and the vehicle doesn’t respond to any input. This is called hydroplaning or aquaplaning.

Due to its 4 wide circumferential grooves, relatively wide horizontal grooves, and open shoulder slots, Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides trustworthy hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

Unlike common knowledge, all-season touring doesn’t build to perform in winter. Well, due to their wide tread, grand touring all-season tires can handle light snow, and some of them even deep snow. Yet, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is an all-season touring tire. Though, it has a wide tread which is a good sign for winter performance.

So, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a highly limited winter performance. However, it can be still useful in some cases.

Light-Snow Traction

Light snow traction is similar to wet traction. However, in this case, the weather is cold, so, the compound is stiffer.

The compound of all-season tires can fittingly perform above 7 Celcius degrees. Below this temperature, the tire loses grip, herewith, traction.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a stiff compound. Therefore, it might put you in trouble if you’ll try to leave for work on a snowy day. Yet, if you can heat the tires up, I’m pretty sure, they will provide decent traction.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has limited light-snow traction. It can take you out of unexpected situations. Though, I don’t recommend them if you see snow for a couple of months.

Deep Snow Traction

Due to its robust shoulders and center rib, the tire can chew the snow. Yet, its stiff compound can’t bite any loose ground at all.

This tire doesn’t have enough void area for loose ground traction. Deep-snow isn’t its expertise.

Ice Traction

If I were you, I never use this tire on icy surfaces. The tire has a compact tread. Well, this is an advantage for icy grounds. However, it’s too stiff to bite slippery and icy surfaces.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a 3 season tire. I don’t recommend using this tire on ice or in severe winter conditions.

Noise

Its void area ratio is increasing after the half of its wear life

Due to their compact tread and generally rib type and continuous center rib, all-season touring tires don’t tend to make too much noise. However, some manufacturers sacrifice noise reduction to get better loose ground traction. Well, Uniroyal isn’t one of them.

Due to its continuous and robust center rib and optimized void area, Tiger Paw Touring A/S offers a quiet ride. However, its 3-D sipes enlarge as they wear. Hence, this tire can make some noise at the late stage of its wear life.

Ride Quality

Ride quality is affected by internal structure as well as tread design.

Regarding tread design, it promises a smooth ride. However, yet again, its stiff compound has a minor negative impact on riding quality. On the other hand, its internal structure is killing it. This tire has an extremely durable and tough internal structure. Hence, it has a bit bumpy and stiff ride. Yet, it won’t be bearable. If were you, I trade a slightly stiff ride for long-lasting rubber the whole day long.

Tread Life

Treadlife is where this tire shines. Even though it doesn’t have an 800 UTQG, due to its symmetrical pattern and true-contact tech(optimized contact patch) that enables the even wear, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides satisfying tread life. Especially for this price level. It’s a golden opportunity.

Kumho Crugen HP71 Review

Updated: November 11, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Kumho Crugen HP71 is a touring all-season tire. This tire is specially designed for SUV and CUV drivers. Moreover, it’s a good fit for light-truck drivers who are looking for a cozy ride. It looks like 62 years of Kumho experience is finally associated with North American tough road requirements. Let’s dig into it and see if it’s worth it!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Kumho Crugen HP71 provides unique dry and wet traction. Though, what makes this tire special is its handling(steering response and cornering stability) features. Moreover, Kumho Crugen HP71 provides long-lasting rubber and a smooth ride if you pick the right size(speed and load index) for yourself. However, it’s a slightly noisy tire and tread wear isn’t acceptable for heavy vehicles(above 4,500 lbs).

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Since most all-season tires can handle dry ground with ease, the dry performance of all-season tires isn’t a decision variable for most drivers. If we’re only talking about the traction and grip features, this might be right.

Though, as a former Bridgestone engineer, I evaluate dry ground performance under two separate headings. Dry traction and handling.

Dry Traction

Due to their over-siped patterns and sticky compound, all-season tires can handle dry traction with ease. However, things are a bit different for Kumho Crugen HP71.

So, when you see the tread, you can clearly see the high amount of sipes. However, compared to its competitors, Crugen HP71 has a relatively stiff compound. So, this doesn’t dramatically affect its dry traction. Moreover, it creates an advantage for better handling.

Kumho Crugen HP71 provides reliable dry traction.

Handling

Handling is where this tire shines.

Due to its robust center rib and symmetrical pattern design, it promises an extremely quick steering response. Moreover, its internal construction is amazing. This tire is almost as tough as an all-terrain tire regarding internal structure.

Its internal structure contains two steel belts that are reinforced by two spirally wrapped nylon cap plies. Well, that provides extraordinary cornering stability at high speeds.

Kumho Crugen HP71 is one of the best regarding handling. I strongly recommend it!

Wet Performance

Wide circumferential grooves are a good sign for a solid wet performance

Wet performance is a bit more complicated than dry performance. In that case, high-speed and low-speed wet performance should be evaluated differently.

While low-speed performance is related to traction, high-speed performance is completely related to hydroplaning resistance.

Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Wet Traction

While wet traction requires a compact tread, hydroplaning resistance needs a more void area to evacuate water. Hence, it’s hard to balance these two features.

So, I’ve already talked about the relatively stiff compound of Kumho Crugen HP71. This’s still on the table. However, Crugen HP 71 comprises tons of sipes. Even though some of them aren’t full-depth, still, this amount is enough to provide solid wet traction.

Kumho Crugen HP71 offers decent wet traction.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning is the water evacuation capability of the tire. In that case, the tread does all the work.

Due to its 4 circumferential tread grooves, full-depth horizontal sipes, and open shoulder design, Kumho Crugen HP71 doesn’t hold any water inside the tread. For this reason, hydroplaning isn’t something you may experience with this tire.

Winter Performance

Unlike the common knowledge, the winter performance of all-season tires is limited to only light-snow traction. In fact, a compound of all-season tires generally gets stiffer under the 7 Celcius degrees and loses its function. So, this equation is valid for Crugen HP71 also.

Regarding light-snow traction, it’s similar to wet traction. Its compound is a bit stiff and getting stiffer below 0 degrees. So, that causes a slight decrease in traction. Yet, I can confidently say that the traction level is exceedingly enough to get you out of unexpected situations.

Regarding deep-snow traction, its tread is not that shallow. Yet, the tire doesn’t comprise enough void area for trustworthy deep snow traction. So, I don’t recommend using it on deep snow. Though, let’s be a bit fair. I’m a bit perfectionist. It provides 6 out of 10 deep snow traction. Well, this isn’t enough for me.

Regarding ice traction, its stiff compound gets stiffer on the ice and the tire become as slick as snot. I don’t recommend using all-season tires on the ice.

If you’d like to read a detailed test report –> https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=278

Ride Quality

I have to admit that I’m pretty impressed by Crugen HP71’s ride quality. Well, when I made my research, I see its perfectly optimized internal structure. So, I was expecting this.

Due to its variable pitch technology and two polyester body cords, Kumho Crugen HP71 provides really satisfying ride quality. Its cords are durable and flexible. Hence, you’ll not even notice the bumps you passed.

Kumho Crugen HP71 offers a cozy ride.I strongly recommend it.

Road Noise

Regarding noise reduction, it’s not successful as it’s on ride quality. Though, for this price level, it’s exceptional.

Due to its sectional and robust center rib and shoulders, it makes slight noise at high-speed. However, the sound is minor. Probably, you’ll notice it after half of its tread life.

Tread Life

Treadwear was the only eye-opening for me. I was expecting a way much better life span.

Due to its symmetrical pattern, it wears evenly. This is a huge advantage. However, the tire is extremely heavy. Hence, even its stiff compound doesn’t provide long-lasting rubber if you have a huge SUV like Audi Q7 or Cadillac Escalade.

The tread life of Kumho Crugen HP71 is variable. If your vehicle is above 4,000lbs, don’t buy this product. Its tread life decreases significantly.

On the other hand, it’s a perfect tire for vehicles like Toyota Camry, and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

Warranty

Kumho offers 65,000 miles and 6 years treadwear warranty for this product. However, the mileage decrease to half if you use different sizes on the front and rear axle.

Uniformity Warranty: You can replace your tire with a new one if you experience any uniformity issue at the first 2/32 of its tread.

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra is an expert on dry and wet traction. Moreover, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra offers huge light snow traction and enough severe winter traction that can get you out of unexpected winter conditions. Though, what makes it special is its huge wear life. It also offers 80,000 miles wear life warranty. However, it provides a bit stiff and slightly noisy ride.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

The dry performance of all-season tires can be evaluated under two different categories. While one of them is dry traction and it’s kinda easy to provide, on the other hand, the other feature handling sometimes causes some issues due to expended void area and notched rubber.

Let’s see what Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra promises regarding traction and handling.

Dry Traction

Alenza AS Ultra has a new high-silica compound which means a huge grip improvement in wet and snowy conditions. Since dry traction needs way much less biting edges than snow and wet performance, all-season touring tires generally don’t have any traction issues on dry ground.

However, regarding Alenza AS Ultra, the over traction. Alenza AS Ultra is a heavy-weight tire. Hence, its rolling resistance is high. So, you may feel a slight delay while starting.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra provides unique dry traction and braking. However, its starting capability is average.

Handling

Handling can be evaluated under two different dimensions. Steering response and cornering stability.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra is molded to a symetric pattern. It has a 2-ply polyester casing under this pattern and this is a huge advantage for better cornering stability. Well, this tire is also designed for a light-trucks. Therefore, it needs tough sidewalls. As a consequence of strong sidewalls, it has decent cornering stability.

Regarding steering response, I can’t say it’ll be the same as your summer touring tires, though, it has a highly appreciated steering response for a heavyweight and over-siped tire.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra offers above-average handling features. Yet, It has a minor tramline issue. I’ll talk about it in the ride comfort section.

Wet Performance

Wet performance is where this tire is shown up. Its compound, tread design, all fits unique wet performance.

Since this tire can be used on different kinds of vehicles, I’m going to evaluate wet performance under two different layers.

Wet Traction

Due to its high-silica compound and over-siped rubber, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra offers alpha-plus wet traction.

However, this doesn’t mean it provides decent handling at high speed. Due to safe handling at high velocity, the tire needs hydroplaning resistance.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is the water evacuation capability of the tire. If the tire holds water inside of the tread, at high speed, you may lose contact with the surface and that might cause vital accidents. So, this part is highly important, especially for aggressive drivers.

Due to its wide vertical grooves and full-depth small horizontal grooves, Alenza AS Ultra offers highly stable hydroplaning resistance. I strongly recommend it if you’re living in a rainy region.

Winter Performance

Alenza AS Ultra's grip capabilty is hugeee!

The winter performance of all-season tires is misunderstood. All-season tires are built to perform under 7 Celcius degrees. So, their winter performance is highly limited compared to winter or all-weather tires.

So, winter performance can be divided into three. Light snow, deep snow, and ice. Normally, all-season touring tires only can handle light snow, yet, Alenza AS Ultra has a bit more.

Note: Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra doesn’t have 3PMSF marking.

Light-Snow Traction

Light snow traction is similar to wet traction. It’s related to notches and compound selection mostly.

Due to high silica compound and over-siped tread, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra can handle the light snow with ease. In that case, its rugged tread grooves helps it clean itself. Hence, this tire has an amazing light-snow performance.

Deep-Snow Traction

Deep-snow traction is where this tire stays slightly behind. Even though its extended void area and high angled inner rib sipes work well for deep snow, its tread depth is shallow for deep snow traction.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra has average deep snow traction. I don’t recommend using it on deep snow after half of its tread life(5/32”).

Ice-Traction

So, it’s not possible to reach decent ice traction with this kind of huge void area. However, Alenza AS Plus has highly angled inner rib sipes and relatively narrower shoulder grooves. So, its ice performance is superior compared to its competitors.

Since I don’t recommend using an all-season tire on ice, it can take you out of unexpected situations, though, please don’t try to use it as a winter tire.

Riding Comfort

Bridgestone tires are a bit bumpy. Yet, they're perfect for a long-range of rides

As a former Bridgestone engineer, I can confidently say that stiff ride is the general problem of Bridgestone tires. The durable internal structure of Bridgestone tires causes this issue. Yet, I take this trade the whole day long.

Well, Alenza AS Ultra has a twin steel belt that provides stability and the nylon-reinforced ply that improves the stability at high-speed. So, it’s a sturdy tire.

Its huge durability causes a bit of a lack of flexibility and flex ride. However, the real issue is different.

Due to its shallow tread depth and kinda fluffy shoulder compound, Alenza AS Ultra tends to tramline.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra has a bit stiff ride.

Road Noise

Alenza AS Ultra uses the same technology that Bridgestone QuietTrack uses. This technology is similar to Pirelli’s noise reduction technology. The tire contains a thin foam layer and this layer decrease the noise frequency. Well, this is an advantage. However, I think this tire needs a bit more improvement.

Due to the wide void area ratio and high rolling resistance, the tire is a bit noisy. Yet, noise reduction tech pays its dues. Bridgestone Alenza Ultra isn’t quiet as a church mouse, yet, it totally worth sacrificing minor noise for huge winter traction.

Tread Life

The tire with low tread depth tends to wear more evenly

Just like Bridgestone’s President, Eric Seidel says customers want better wear life. So, it looks like wear life is what Bridgestone mainly focuses on for this tire.

Due to its relatively stiff and high-silica compound, symmetrical pattern, and high internal structure durability, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra offers one of the best wear life in the market. I strongly recommend it!

Note: The cut&chipping resistance of Alenza AS Ultra is highly acceptable. Though worth reminding, this isn’t an off-road tire. If you’ll use it off the road, your tread life might decrease.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

Warranty

Bridgestone offers various warranties for this product.

Treadwear: 80,000 miles and 5 years

Uniformity: It’s valid for the first 2/32” of wear

Manufacturer Special Warranty: 90 days buy&try guarantee

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra Warranty Document: https://www.tirerack.com/images/pdf/warranty/BS0121.pdf

Fuel Efficiency

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra is a high-weight and high-rolling resistance tire. Therefore, it might improve fuel consumption.

Since I’m at the beginning of tread life, I didn’t observe any increase, yet, I think I’ll experience it soon.

Conclusion

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra is a perfect option for those who need solid winter traction and long-lasting rubber. Moreover, its wet performance is superior to most all-season tires in the market. However, it provides a bit stiff ride. Well, in my point of view, this trade is acceptable. I highly recommend this tire for light truck users who are looking for a smooth ride and SUV and CUV users who are looking for an alpha plus wet and light-snow traction.

Firestone WeatherGrip Review

Updated: July 29, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Firestone Weather Grip is an all-weather tire that can be used on sedans, coupes, SUVs, crossovers, and station wagons. Since it has a 3PMSF marking, it’s a perfect solution for those who are looking for a one-tire solution for a whole year long. All-weather tires are slightly different than all-season tires. The difference brings along advantages and disadvantages. Let’s dig into it and detailly analyze them!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Firestone Weathergrip is a unique tire regarding dry and wet performance. Though, what makes Firestone Weathergrip special is its winter traction no matter how icy the surface is. It outperforms even some winter tires in every winter condition but ice. Moreover, it has a highly smooth ride for its aggressive design. However, its tread life isn’t satisfying as its other features, and it’s a slightly noisy tire.

Dry Performance

Dry performance can be evaluated under three different sub-titles which are dry traction, cornering stability, and steering response.

While dry traction is a piece of cake, steering response and cornering stability sometimes can be an issue due to aggressive design and relatively heavy internal structure.

Let’s see how Firestone Weathergrip performs under these circumstances.

Dry Traction

All-weather(see the best ones) and all-season tires are the improved versions of summer tires regarding traction. Even though these improvements are mainly focused on cold-weather traction, they also have a huge impact on dry traction.

Due to its extremely notched rubber and fluffy and sticky compound, Firestone Weathergrip has outstanding dry traction capability. Yet, in my point of view, this feature is a must for all-weather tires(see the best ones). So, nothing much to be impressed with.

Steering Response

Steering response is related to two technical features. The weight of the tire and a pattern type.

Regarding weight, Firestone Weathergrip has an extremely light structure which is a huge advantage for some cases. Well, steering response is one of them. Light-weight tires need less force to turn each side. Hence, they generally have a quicker steering response.

Moreover, the design of the Firestone Weathergrip is directional. Luckily, this is a massive advantage for rapid steering response. In that case, its asymmetrical and sectional center rib will slightly decrease your steering response. However, its extremely soft compound creates an advantage out here and gives this tire cannonball steering response.

Firestone Weathergrip is a reliable option for quick steering response. Though worth reminding, the response time tends to decrease in cold weather conditions. This is a natural reaction of the tire. I’ll talk about it detailly in the winter performance section.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is totally related to tires’ internal structure. Especially, sidewalls.

In this case, strong sidewalls are the game-changers. Due to complete this mission, Firestone uses an extra nylon reinforcement. This reinforcement helps the tire to keep its shape while cornering at a high pace.

Firestone Weathergrip has trustworthy cornering stability.

Wet Performance

Its extremely siped rubber contains tons of biting edges

The wet performance of all-season tires is generally unquestionable. Due to their rib-type designs and continuous circumferential grooves, their wet performance is decent.

However, the softness of the compound also affects wet performance. Especially, hydroplaning resistance. In that case, the firm compound works better.

Under the light of information above, let’s evaluate Wintergrip’s wet performance.

Wet Traction

Wet traction is where it shines. Due to its exceedingly notched rubber and fluffy compound, it has extraordinary dry traction capability.

Firestone Weathergrip has trustworthy wet traction. Yet, wet traction isn’t something you have to worry about for all-weather tires. The real issue is hydroplaning resistance.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is also known as aquaplaning. It’s basically the skate feeling when braking at high speed while it’s raining. It’s vital and all-about water evacuation capability.

Due to their increased void areas, all-weather and winter tires sometimes struggle because of hydroplaning. In this case, a solid contact patch is a game-changer.

Based on its 4 circumferential grooves and optimized contact patch, Firestone Weathergrip has an alpha plus hydroplaning resistance. In that case, its directional pattern also helps a lot.

Winter Performance

Keeping the tread clean is the key for decent winter performance

Because of the 3PMSF marking(what it is?), we’re all expecting an elegant winter performance from Firestone Wintergrip. However, 3PMSF marking states the winter harmony of the compound. So, decent and all-round winter performance also needs an efficient contact patch.

Unlike others, I would like to classify its winter performance according to particular winter conditions.

Light-Snow Traction

Light-snow traction is highly similar to wet traction. The only difference is self-cleaning capability is a must for decent light-snow traction.

I’ve already talked about the notches and soft compound. So, out here, I wanna talk about the sectional lugs. Instead of one big lug, Firestone prefers sectional lugs for this tire. This preference increases the movement capability of lugs. Moreover, self-cleaning capability.

Firestone Weather Grip has an awesome light-snow traction capability. I strongly recommend it.

Note: The steering response of all-weather tires tends to decrease for all-season tires. However, all-weather tires have a huge advantage in winter steering response due to their freezing-resist compounds.

Deep-Snow Traction

Deep-snow traction of all-season and all-weather tires are generally limited due to their low tread depth. In this case, the void area is another game-changer. However, increasing these two deal death blow to riding comfort. Therefore, the manufacturers usually don’t prefer to increase these two.

Regarding Firestone Weathergrip, things are a bit different. It looks like Firestone decided to cut some from comfort due to increased winter performance.

Firestone Weathergrip has a regular tread depth. Though, its void area ratio is higher than most all-weather and all-season tires. Therefore, its deep snow traction is higher than almost every tire in its category.

Note: All-weather tires are a combination of all-weather and winter tires. Well, they are usually closer to the all-season tires. However, Firestone Weathergrip’s priority is a winter performance. Hence, it’s closer to winter tires.

Ice Traction

Ice traction is related to the fulfilled contact patch. While deep snow traction needs a void area, it’s the opposite for ice traction.

The pattern is very-well siped, therefore it offers some traction on icy grounds. However, such a void area can’t make it the perfect tire for ice.

Even though it has above-average ice traction, Firestone Weathergrip’s ice performance is limited compared to winter/ice tires(see the list of them).

Ride Quality

Blocky patterns tend to make some noise

The ride quality of the tire is related to contour, internal structure, and compound.

Contour states the height and width of the tire. While wide tires offer better ride quality, this is the opposite of tall tires. Regarding Firestone Weathergrip(product page), it’s neither tall nor narrow tire. Well, due to its low tread, it can be counted as a relatively short tire. However, I think it’s totally similar to all-season tires. No plus or minus points for its contour.

Regarding compound and internal, it’s alpha plus. Due to its single-ply polyester casing, it has a flexible internal structure which makes it highly smooth while going through the bumps. Moreover, its compound is fluffy as hell. Therefore, unlike most Bridgestone and Firestone tires, it’s an exceedingly cozy tire.

Fuel Efficiency

Due to its fluffy compound, it has high rolling resistance. Well, too much sipe also negatively impacts it.

Even though it’s a lightweight tire, it still consumes a bit much gas. I don’t recommend it for commercial usage.

Road Noise

Road noise is where Firestone gives away for better winter performance.

Firestone Weathergrip has an increased void area ratio. This ratio is a bit higher than regular all-season tires. Moreover, its sectional center works have a negative impact in that case.

If I’ll say this tire is extremely noisy, it would be unfair. However, compared to other premium-level all-weather tires, it stays a bit behind. Yet, I think this increase in noise level covers the improvement in the winter performance.

Tread Life

The Tread life of all-weather tires is lower than most all-season tires. Well, that is caused by their softer compounds. A side note for here, 3PMSF marking generally decreases the tread life by about 15%.

Firestone Weathergrip has a short tread life for a premium all-season tire. However, you’ll get an all-season tire with winter performance in return for some tread life. I take this trade every time.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

Warranty

Firestone offers 65,000 miles treadwear warranty for this product. So, if you’ll rotate your tires every 5,000 miles, even though you don’t reach 65,000 miles, you’re free to replace them.

Firestone also offers 90 days buy&try guarantee. As a former Bridgestone engineer, I don’t buy it. 90 days isn’t enough to evaluate a tire.

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Pirelli P Zero has a unique performance on wet and dry grounds. Since Pirelli P Zero mainly focuses on performance, it’s slightly noisy and can be a bit bumpy due to low aspect ratio sizes. Though, nothing is unbearable out there. Even though its tread life is acceptable for trucks, it has poor tread life for daily driving usage.

After much positive feedback, the Pirelli P Zero has also made its way into the replacement market. Even though P Zero has been in the market for long years to prove its performance, people are still debating about its capability.

Well, it’s acceptable because these kinds of high-technology tires generally have decisive use restrictions and most people fail to follow them.  In this article, while giving some advice to use, I’ll also evaluate Pirelli P Zero’s performance. Let’s dig into it!

Note: 11 different Pirelli P Zero tire is available and all of them are specified for different usage. I recommend you check them all out before deciding.

Dry Performance

Narrowed circumferential grooves on the shoulder improve its handling capability

Dry performance is crucial for maximum performance tires. Especially for summer-specific ones. Well, two evaluation criteria are important in that case. Dry traction and handling. Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Dry Traction

Dry traction is the easiest part of tire development. It’s mostly related to the compound selection. The equation is simple. Softer compounds always provide a better grip. Since we’re talking about the maximum performance tires, Pirelli P Zero has exceedingly fluffy rubber.

Due to its special silica and carbon black tread compound, it has unique dry traction. Moreover, these special compound provides better grip while tires are still cold for the first couple of miles.

Note: Performance tires should be heated up for maximum performance. Therefore, Pirelli P Zero’s cold-grip ability is a huge advantage for daily drivers.

Handling

High handling capability is a must for performance tires. Due to reach out maximum handling capability, manufacturers prefer fulfilled tread patterns. Consequently, more intense contact patch.

In that case, the outer side of Pirelli P Zero’s tread has an exceedingly narrowed rib groove. That robust shoulder and rib combination helps you to maintain stability while cornering at high speeds. Moreover, this section is supported by a wide center rib that is built for rapid steering response.

Pirelli P Zero has a satisfying handling capability. Therefore, it’s a good option if you don’t have a sports vehicle but you wanna put a fancy look to your vehicle. Though worth reminding, in return, you’ll lose some tread life.

Wet Performance

Depending on the built intent, some maximum performance tires can fail regarding wet performance. If the building intent focuses on track, well, a lack of wet performance is expected. However, if the building intent is daily driving, then solid wet performance is a must.

Pirelli P Zero has a little of both. It’s a hybrid tire that can be used both ways. However, in my point of view, it’s optimized very well. Maybe you don’t get a maximum of daily driving or track, though, you get 8 out of 10 from both which makes it extremely preferable.

For a better understanding, let’s evaluate its wet performance on part subtitle.

Wet Traction

Wet traction mainly consists of starting and acceleration. In that case, soft compound and increased biting edges help tire a lot.

Pirelli P Zero has some advantages on both points. It has a fluffy and sticky compound. Moreover, it has a good amount of notches for a summer performance tire. Therefore, its wet traction capability is highly acceptable.

Though worth reminding, the tire should be heated up to reach maximum grip level. So, daily drivers, that might be an issue for 10-15 minutes.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is the tires’ water evacuation capability. It is the highest priority safety feature of high-speed driving on wet grounds.

In that case, circumferential grooves and open shoulders play a crucial role. Well, Pirelli P Zero’s tread design also promises a lot out here. Unlike most performance summer tires, it has 3 circumferential grooves and semi-open shoulder blocks. Hence, it has unique hydroplaning resistance for performance tires.

If you’re a daily driver, still keep your speed at the lowest level under the pouring rain. This is not a tire for inexperienced high-speed drivers for wet.

Tread Life

UHP tires doesn't last long

In point of fact, dry and wet performance are the only features that are fair to evaluate. The goal is to reach the maximum performance for this tire. So, tread life stays behind on the importance list.

Pirelli P Zero has a fluffy compound. 220 UTQG is one of the lowest one in the market. Therefore, in my point of view, this is not a daily driving tire. Though, track drivers can get approximately 20,000 miles. It’s a good number for such a grip.

Note: If you’re not spending too much on traffic and check your inflation pressure regularly, you can get 35,000-40,000 miles of tread life. I recommend a 2-3 psi low-set of your regular tire pressure. This tire can heat up quickly so let’s stay on the safe side.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

Fuel Efficiency

If you’re switching from the passenger tires, it’ll definitely increase your fuel consumption. Even more, it has an extremely soft compound, so, it’ll probably be a bit more aggressive than your former performance tire.

Comfort

P Zero is mostly available on low profile sizes. Therefore, riding quality isn't its priority

Well, in my point of view, if we’re talking about performance tires, discussing comfort level is kinda pointless. Yet, since it covers some of the daily driving usages, comfort is also part of my analysis.

Driving Quality

Performance tires have a lack driving quality due to low aspect ratio. However, these tires generally have a soft compound that covers some of this deficiency.

In our case, both scenarios are valid. I can’t say this tire has low driving quality. However, its thin sidewalls make this floating feeling while steering. This level is acceptable for tracks, yet, daily drivers may not like it.

Road Noise

This design is too aggressive for this level of speed ratings. Its sectional shoulders and center rib are also slightly more robust than they have to be. This is necessary for better handling but it still makes this tire vocal.

However, Pirelli uses specific technology for this tire. They adhere a layer of sound-absorbing foam to the inner liner of the tire to reduce cabin noise in the vehicle. It works but noise is still an issue.  I can’t say more than average.

Note:

  • Pirelli gives these ratings for suitable vehicles. You might see lower online ratings due to the wrong tire selection.
  • I didn’t add run-flat tires to this list. Please note that run-flat tires have a slightly harsher ride and lower tread life. Moreover, run-flat tires are hard to find. I don’t recommend them unless you aren’t shopping online.

Conclusion

Pirelli P Zero tires are designed for maximum performance. Therefore, most of them have a limited tread life. They are a superior pick for dry and wet handling and stability. Yet, you should select the right tire for your vehicle if you want proper performance. The below table will help you to pick the best one for yourself.
