Hankook Winter i*Pike Review

Updated: December 26, 2023 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Hankook Winter i*pike is a family of northern(severe) winter tires introduced by Hankook. This family consists of 4 different members. Each member serves different usage purposes. Hankook Winter i-pike tires which have been highly preferred for harsh winter conditions since their launch can offer you a great winter performance if you know which member you prefer. Let’s go a little deeper and see which one is suitable for you!

Hankook Winter i*Pike tires are specified for toughest winter conditions
  • Hankook Winter i*pike RW11 – Longevity & Traction for SUVs & Light Trucks
  • Hankook Winter i*pike RS W419 – Longevity & Traction for passanger vehicles
  • Hankook Winter i*pike RS2 W429 – Comfort & Traction for All Vehicles ( except Light Trucks)
  • Hankook Winter i*pike X W429A – Comfort & Traction for SUV, CUV & Light Trucks

Table of Contents

Hankook Winter i*Pike RW11

Hankook Winter i*pike RW11 is a studdable winter performance tire that is optimized for light trucks and SUVs. The reason I would like to state this customizing is Winter i*pike can handle mild off-road as well. It’s also the only tire in this list that can provide trustworthy mild off-road traction.

Hankook Winter i*Pike RW 11 is one of the most durable winter tires in the market

As a former Bridgestone engineer, I think that Hankook Winter i*Pike RW11 is one of the best winter tires for light trucks and SUVs. Though, this tire is designed for severe conditions. It can also handle mild off-road conditions. While performs perfectly on wet and dry grounds, it also offers decent comfort and handling. Where it comes slightly short compared to other Winter i*Pike RW11 tires is road noise. It’s slightly noisier than others due to its aggressive pattern but the noise is totally tolerable for this durability.

The only issue with this tire is finding it. Even though it’s available in LT and P-metric sizes, most dealers keep only one tire size. According to my research, you can find them in the below dealers.

For LT sizes,

SimpleTire – Hankook Winter i*Pike RW11

For XL & SL sizes,

DiscountTire – Hankook Winter i*Pike RW11

Overview

  • Hankook Winter i*pike RW11 can be pinned with TSMI #15 studs. This isn’t a must but if you’re living in an extremely icy and face hills regularly, these studs will increase your biting and grip capability.
  • Hankook Winter i*pike RW is available on LT and passenger metrics sizes. Since this is the only Winter i*pike tire that is available in LT sizes, I highly recommend this tire for medium and heavy-duty usage.
  • Hankook Winter i*pike RW11 has a wide pattern. Hence, it offers better traction but will slightly increase your fuel consumption as expected.
  • Hankook Winter i*pike RW11 can perform greatly on commercial usage

On-Road Manners

The design of Winter i*Pike is somewhere between winter and all-weather tires.

Road noise is the first thing that comes to mind when I’m talking about winter tires. Well, this is a common feature of winter tires. These tires have tons of sipes and void areas to increase their traction capability.

So, Hankook Winter i*pike RW11 is slightly different than its competitors. As you can see, its center rib is continuous. This feature brings a great advantage in two different areas.

  • Decrease the road noise
  • Offers quicker steering response

However, regarding road noise, the compact center section isn’t the only game changer. In this case, Winter i*pike RW11 has robust shoulder blocks and extremely sectional tread. Therefore, it creates slight road noise but nothing more than your regular winter or all-terrain tire.

Traction

As we all understand from the sectional tread, notched rubber, and stud option, this tire is made for traction.

Regarding dry traction, there is no issue with traction. Yet, its rubber isn’t designed for warm weather. It’s fluffy. Hence, it offers satisfying traction on dry grounds. Yet, using this tire over 7 Celcius degrees will definitely hit its longevity.

Regarding wet traction, thanks to its sipe density and soft rubber, it offers a great wet ground performance. However, what I like most is its hydroplaning resistance. Most winter tires fail in this case. However, Hankook Winter i*Pike RW11 has a V-shaped directional pattern that increases the water evacuation capability significantly. So, this tire not only offers great wet traction but reliable overall wet performance.

Regarding winter traction, as you can see most grooves are zigzag on this tire. The reason behind this is simple. Increase the biting edge for better ice and snow performance. Plus, its sectional pattern and relatively fluffy compound step ahead in this case and offer great winter performance.

Note: The only thing you have to consider in winter performance is using it with or without studs. I do only recommend studs for mostly icy surfaces and slopy lands.

Longevity

The mileage you can get with this tire is totally up to you. Since it’s a wide tire, following the rotation time and tire pressure are the keys.

Since the stud option is available, I can confidently say that this tire isn’t fluffy as your regular winter tires. Besides that, the V-shaped patterns can perfectly disturb the vehicle load and generally increase the tread life significantly.

If you have a light truck, I strongly believe that this tire offers one of the best tread life for a winter tire.

Hankook Winter i*Pike X W429A

Hankook Winter i*Pike X is a winter performance tire that is designed for SUVs, CUVs, and light truck owners that puts a comfy and quiet ride over everything. Unlike its bully brother i*pike RW11, Hankook Winter i*Pike X’s priority is comfort and traction. Therefore, it isn’t available in LT sizes. So, usage for over 1/2 ton trucks is rare. Besides, I don’t recommend it.

Winter i*Pike X is a comfort-focused tire for large SUVs and light trucks

In summary, Hankook Winter i*Pike X is a great tire for CUV, SUV, and below 1/2 ton light-truck owners that are looking for a quiet winter tire. Besides that, this tire lasts like an all-terrain tire which is highly rare among winter tires. While it can handle wet and dry surfaces very well, it’s also a great option for aggressive drivers. In my point of view, this is the best winter tire you can get for your SUV(for this price level).

Overview

  • Hankook Winter i*Pike X (W429A) is a great option for SUV, CUVs & light truck owners who spend most of their time on highways
  • Hankook Winter i*Pike X (W429A) can be pinned with TSMI #12 studs
  • Hankook Winter i*Pike X (W429A) is only available for P-metric sizes. Hence, if you’re going to use this tire with commercial intent, I do recommend it only for medium and light-duty usage.
  • Hankook Winter i*Pike X (W429A) is a better option than Winter i*pike RW11 if your priorities are comfort, tread life, and fuel efficiency
  • Hankook Winter i*Pike X (W429A) is a great tire for performance-oriented vehicles.

On-Road Manners

If you’re looking for a winter tire for your SUV or CUV, Hankook Winter i*Pike X is one of the best you can get. Unlike its elder brother i*Pike RW11, it offers a bit less void area. Therefore, it provides less vocal and a offers a smoother ride.

While its wide center blocks decrease the void area and offer a less vocal ride. Moreover, as you can see these center blocks are interlocked. Since these blocks act as a one block while running, this tire offers great handling capability. Though worth reminding, unline its elder brother i*pike RW11, this dude provide slightly slower steering response. Still, it’s one of the best in its segment (SUV, CUV & below 1/2 ton trucks).

Traction

Similar to most winter tires, Hankook Winter i*Pike X offers reliable traction on any kind of surface. I’ll try to keep it shorter for this time.

Regarding dry traction, it can provide decent dry traction, though, using it over 7 Celcius degrees isn’t a good idea.

Regarding wet traction, the traction isn’t an issue but in my point of view, this tire has better hydroplaning resistance. Its central grooves are almost circumferential which enables better water evacuation capability. So, if you have a mobile and agile vehicle, the Hankook Winter i-Pike X is a great option for you.

Regarding winter traction, here is the deal, Hankook Winter i*Pike X is great for light-snow and ice traction. However, since its tread depth is now that deep, its deep snow performance reaches its best with studs. It doesn’t mean studs are a must but if your region has snow-plowing issues, it might be better to go with stud options (less void area decreases the loose ground traction).

Longevity

Since Hankook Winter i*Pike X and RW11 are developed from all-terrain tires, they have relatively stiffer compounds than other winter tires. Besides that, Winter i*Pike X has relatively fewer sipes than the i-Pike RW11. Moreover, its tread is narrower.

Because of the above reason, Hankook Winter i*Pike X exceedingly satisfying tread life.

Hankook Winter i*Pike RS W419

Hankook Winter i*Pike RS is traction and longevity-focused winter tire. Unlike the first two tires on this list, this tire is specified for passenger vehicles like sedans, coupes, and CUVs. The tread is inspired by the Siberian Husky Paw. Well, they know what severe winter is.

Hankook Winter i*Pike RS is one of the best tires for winter belt regions

In summary, Hankook Winter i*Pike RS is a great tire if you need the best winter traction. This tire is designed for the harshest winter conditions. Besides that, its all-weather tire tread pattern enables dry and winter performance. So, if traction is the goal, this is what you can get maximum. On the other hand, it’s a noisy tire as expected. Besides that, its warm-wet performance is slightly behind the competition. Though, it lasts like there is no tomorrow!

Overview

  • I don’t recommend using this tire on over 1/2 ton SUV or any light-truck
  • In the beginning, this tire was available with studs. Since it makes too much noise with studs, Hankook made studs optional.
  • Hankook Winter *Pike RS is labeled with 3PMSF like other tires in this list
  • Hankook Winter i*Pike RS is a great tire if traction is your priority
  • The tire meets with the harshest winter conditions. Hence, its wet performance and handling capability are slightly behind other tires on this list

On-Road Manners

If you’re looking for the best winter traction, Hankook Winter i*Pike RS can get you what you want. However, as it’s expected from a tough winter tire, it’s a bit noisy. Moreover, you may feel a bit lagging while steering in warm weather.

  • Hankook Winter i*Pike RS is a noisy tire
  • Hankook Winter i*Pike RS provides similar handling the most winter tires in the market

Traction

Traction is where this tire shines. No matter how cold or warm the weather is, Hankook Winter i*Pike RS provides trustworthy handling.

Regarding dry traction, because of its V-shaped pattern and relatively stiffer compound, Hankook Winter i*Pike RS works great in dry conditions

Regarding wet traction, since the Winter i*Pike RS is intensely notched, it can handle cold rainy days. However, since its compound is stiff, its warm-day wet performance is slightly behind the competition.

Regarding winter traction, while it can handle icy conditions with ease due to its compact pattern, its 2-1 aggressive tread enables tons of biting edges and increase the snow traction incredibly. This dude is one of the best ones you can get if you’re living in the snow belt.

Longevity

Unlike most winter tires, Hankook Winter i*Pike RS has a directional pattern that enables even wearing. Moreover, its compound gets into the game again. It’s stiff and notched with 3D sipes which limits the deformation and decreases the stopping and starting wear.

Even though this tire doesn’t have any mileage warranty, I can guarantee you can use it for at least 3-4 years.

Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2 W429A

Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2 is a bit more comfort-focused winter tire that can be used on coupes, sedans, CUVs, and SUVs. Its tread is similar to Hankook Winter i*Pike X. Hence, its void area is decreased. Since its pattern is similar to all-terrain tires, it can handle loose ground pretty well.

Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2 has a less void area then other Winter i*Pike tires which makes is quiet and smooth

In summary, Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2 is a comfort-focused winter tire that can also handle mud and dirt. While it can handle all 4 seasons with ease, it wears a bit quicker that other Hankook Winter i*Pike tires. Yet, I can confidently say that it’s going to last more than any Nokian or Michelin winter tires. Due to its compact pattern, it’s not a vocal tire. Besides that, its handling capability is huge. I think it’s a great tire for SUV & CUV owners who would like to combine comfort and winter traction.

Overview

  • Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2 isn’t a good option for passenger car owners if you spend most of your time on the highway
  • It’s a good option for coupes and sedans that face mud occasionally
  • It can be pinned with TSMI #11 studs if you need extra ice & snow traction
  • Don’t stud your tires if you have a coupe or sedan
  • Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2 can handle dirt pretty well. It’s a good option for winter tracking or hunting days

On-Road Manners

Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2 has pretty satisfying on-road manners. Even though its compact pattern decreases the noise level significantly, its uneven and robust shoulder blocks make a slight noise.

Regarding handling, things aren’t much different. Its compact center section makes and robust shoulders increase its handling capability. However, it doesn’t have a center section rib. Hence, its steering response is slightly behind the regular all-season tires. Yet, this isn’t a tire for 1-2 months of winter. It is definitely worth to sacrifices some from your steering response.

  • Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2 is a cozy and quiet tire for its aggressive appearance
  • Even though it’s a highly responsive tire, expecting all-season tire performance is quite imaginative

Traction

Since we’re talking about winter tires, I don’t prefer to call this one a traction-focused tire. Unlike its elder brother Hankook Winter i*Pike RS, it’s a bit all-around tire.

Regarding dry traction, nothing much to talk about, traction isn’t the issue in this case. What you really have to worry about is wearing on warm weather. This guy has a fluffier compound that wears extremely quickly in warm weather.

Regarding wet traction, wet traction is why I call this tire more all-round. Since its compound is fluffier, it provides decent traction on wet surfaces. But for what cost? I’ll talk about it in the longevity section.

Regarding winter traction, it would be unfair to rate this tire’s snow performance as a little behind. But I have to state that the infrequency void area decreases its heavy snow traction slightly. But, I’m going to say totally opposite for ice traction. The compact patch and notched rubber provide great traction on icy surfaces.

Longevity

Longevity is where this tire comes short compared to Hankook Winter i*Pike RS. Due to its blocky pattern and fluffy compound, this dude wears a bit more quickly than others.

I can’t say it doesn’t last long but its priority is comfort, not longevity.

Conclusion

Hankook Winter i*Pike tires are a great option if you’re living in harsh winter conditions.

  • Hankook Winter i*pike RW11 – Longevity & Traction for SUVs & Light Trucks
  • Hankook Winter i*pike RS W419 – Longevity & Traction for passanger vehicles
  • Hankook Winter i*pike RS2 W429 – Comfort & Traction for All Vehicles ( except Light Trucks)
  • Hankook Winter i*pike X W429A – Comfort & Traction for SUV, CUV & Light Trucks

So, if you experience winter for 1-2 months for a year, you don’t need to experience this rough driving.

Though worth reminding, if you’re going to buy these tires, you’ll never be happy with the other winter tires’ traction.

I hope the article was helpful. You can hit me up if you need any further questions. Have a safe ride folks!

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV Review

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan 6 Comments

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is a winter tire that is specified for SUVs and Crossovers. This tire is modified by Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV. Well, if you take a look at the available sizes, you can easily see that Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV offers wider tire sizes which are extremely sufficient for winter usage of SUVs and CUVs. However, being a winter tire bring along with slight disadvantages. Let’s dig into it and see if it meets your expectations!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is a winter tire that provides excellent fuel economy. Besides that, its compact pattern and unique compound can grip the ice like no other tire. Furthermore, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is a cozy but slightly noisy tire. Last but not least, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV offers one of the longest mileage of its segment.

Note: Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is a recommended tire for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Table of Contents

Winter Performance

Alright, fellows, Nokian is a Finnish tire manufacturer that is located in the northmost part of Europe. You may think that this manufacturer may not understand the severe winter conditions of the US. Let me tell you something, I’ve been there for a couple of months, and the temperature was around -4°F (-20°C). So, if we’re talking about the winter they’re experts.

So, the most important duty of winter tires is grip. To achieve better grip quality, soft compound and notched rubber are musts. Therefore, the compound and the tread will be my ovulation points for the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV.

To provide more understanding of outputs, I’m going to divide this section into three. Light snow, deep snow, and ice. Let’s move on to the sections.

Light Snow

A decent light snow performance can be obtained with only the well-notched rubber. For instance, let’s think about all-season tires that perform well on light snow. Unlike you think these tires have stiff compounds. However, the sipe intensity can handle the light-snow traction on its own.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV provides a good amount of sipe density even too much for icy surfaces. It handles light snow with ease.

Breaking distance, starting, and acceleration, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV can handle it all on light snow. I strongly recommend it.

Deep Snow

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV's relatively smaller lugs provide decent loose ground grip

Deep snow traction is generally directly proportional to tread depth. In other words, it’s inverse proportional to handling.

So, the manufacturers have two options in this case:

  • Decrease the tread depth but increase the void ratio of the tread. This option increases the road noise. Since Nokian’s priority is comfort, they didn’t choose this option
  • Increase the tread depth but decrease the void ratio. This option can slightly decrease handling capability. Yet, it’s a huge improvement in comfort

Apparently, Nokian chose the second option. This option also gives you a chance to decrease compound stiffness which is a great advantage for winter traction.

What I like most about this tire is its snow claws on the shoulder blocks. These claws increase the deep and relatively soft snow grip.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is a great tire for severe winter conditions and deep snow. I strongly recommend it if you’re living in the snow belt region.

Ice

As I’ve mentioned in the previous section, Nokian doesn’t use the void areas to get loose ground traction for this tire. Hence, they can get better contact patch for icy and dry grounds.

In this case, tons of sipes and a compact tread pattern work perfectly. Though, the ‘Arctic Grip Crystal’ inside of the compound does the magic trick. These microscopic crystals work like a stud and provide unique grip and handling on icy surfaces.

Besides that, these crystals can activate themself as the tire wear down. Thus, the ice grip capability of your tire doesn’t decrease with wear.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is one of the best winter tires you can get for icy surfaces. I strongly recommend it.

Wet Performance

Wet performance can be evaluated under two different subtitles.

Wet grip and hydroplaning resistance.

While a wet grip is more important for breaking and starting, hydroplaning resistance is your life savior in downpours.

Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Wet Grip

In this case, softer compounds and sipes work best.

As I’ve mentioned before, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV has a relatively compact pattern for a winter tire. The more rubber touch the ground, the more wet grip you get.

Due to its exceedingly notched rubber, new double block tread design, and compact pattern, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV provides a great wet grip.

Hydroplanning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is basically the water evacuation capability of the tire.

On this score, the ‘V-shaped grooves work perfectly. These grooves can direct the water out of the tread because of their directional array and the reverse angle on the shoulder section.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV offers a unique hydroplaning resistance.

Dry Performance

Since Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is a dedicated winter tire, it must be used under 7-celsius degrees or 45 Fahrenheit. Hence, in this section, I’ll evaluate the dry performance in cold weather.

In this matter, the game changers are steering response, cornering stability, and dry traction. Since these features are affected by different metrics, I’m going to separate this section into three.

Note: Using winter tires in warm weather is dangerous. Your braking distance will increase, your tires will wear rapidly and the responsiveness of your tire will draw back significantly.

Dry Traction

Dry traction isn’t something you have to worry about due to its compact pattern. However, in this matter, I wanna talk about a couple of things.

  • Compared to your all-season tires, you’ll get slow starting and acceleration
  • I don’t recommend aggressive breaking with winter tires. Winter compounds generally have a slow slick on dry surfaces.

Steering Response

Because of their lug-type patterns and fluffy compounds, winter tires generally provide a slow steering response. Unlike Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV, this dude has a relatively stiffer compound. Yet, manufacturers have nothing to do with the matter of compound stiffness. Winter tires should have softer and slicker compounds.

On the other hand, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV doesn’t have a continuous center rib as Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV has. Its center rib is a bit more notched. It seems like a wavy center rib going through the all tread. Normally, that might decrease the responsiveness. However, as I’ve mentioned above its relatively stiffer compound is an advantage.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is one of the best in this case. Its continuous and wavy center rib is relatively stiffer than the rest of the compound and helps it to decrease response time.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV offers a quick steering response for a winter tire.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is related to strong sidewalls.

In this case, Nokian uses aramid fibers to strengthen sidewalls. The good news is these fibers are extremely durable and solid. Hence, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV has strong sidewalls.

Due to its strong sidewalls, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV offers stable cornering no matter how fast you are.

Comfort & Road Noise

Dealers started to stock up

A smooth drive is the priority of the Nokian. Hence, they prefer a relatively compact pattern for this tire.

As I mentioned early in this article, the void area of this tire is relatively lower than other winter tires. Yet, its continuous center rib is wavy. Moreover, in our matter, stiff shoulder blocks create slight road noise but compared to other winter tires, this is probably beneath notice.

Nokian Hakkapelliitta R5 SUV is a quiet tire.

Regarding comfort, things are quite the same. Because of the aramid fiber technology on the sidewall, Nokian can decrease the weight of this tire. So, they have an extra place to use polyester casing. This casing limits the deformation of the tire while wheeling and offers a cozier ride. Though worth reminding, its fluffy compound absorbs the road impact pretty well also.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is a cozy tire.

Mileage

Mileage was the issue of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV. It was performing very well but doesn’t last long.

So, the Nokian make a great update in this case and changed the all-tread design of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV. They didn’t expand the void area significantly but by the virtue of double grip tread design, they increase the stiffness of the compound. In my point of view, this is one of the biggest updates you can make on a winter tire.

This stiff Green Trace compound works on a wider temperature range and wears slower than most winter tire compounds.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV provides great mileage.  I can confidently say that you have at least one extra winter with this tire.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

Mileage Warranty

Nokian doesn’t offer any mileage warranty for this product.

Note: Only one winter tire has a mileage warranty in the market

  • Michelin X-Ice3

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is related to tire weight and rolling resistance.

While stiff compounds provide better rolling resistance, lightweight tires consume less fuel.

In our matter, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is one of the best tires in the market in both cases.

If fuel efficiency is your priority, Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is your tire.

Michelin X-Ice Snow Review

Updated: December 26, 2023 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Michelin X-Ice Snow is a studless winter tire. This tire can be used on sedans, coupes, crossovers, SUVs, and minivans. Everybody in the tire industry knows that Michelin Crossclimate 2 is a king of all-weather tires(best ones). Well, X-Ice Snow is developed from Crossclimate 2 tread. Believe my guys, this tread design promises a lot. Let’s dig into it and see what it can bring to you!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Michelin X-Ice Snow is an alpha plus tire no matter how severe your winter conditions are. While offering perfect traction on light snow, it also outperforms most winter tires regarding deep snow and ice. Moreover, while working gorgeously on snow, it also offers long-lasting tread and fuel efficiency. Michelin X-Ice Snow is quiet and cozy. However, even though it prevents most of its performance in warm conditions, I don’t recommend using them above 7 Celcius degrees.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

The dry performance of winter is misunderstood. Many people think that winter tires can’t provide traction in summer. That’s completely wrong.

Due to their soft compounds, winter tires can provide traction no matter the temperature is. However, softer compounds become softer in summer times and that causes rapid wearing. So, in fact, you’re losing money, not the traction.

On the other hand, the real issue is handling. When the rubber becomes fluffy, the tire can preserve its shape and handling issues occur.

Lastly but most importantly, if the weather is cold, it doesn’t mean it’s gonna rain or snow. You also need dry traction in winter conditions. In this section, I’ll talk about winter dry traction.

Michelin X-Ice Snow has decent dry traction in cold weather. Michelin uses FleX-Ice 2.0 compound on the X-Ice Snow that can prevent its softness. So, gripping isn’t an issue for it.

Even though X-Ice Snow has a lug-type tread, this V-Shaped design, decreases the void area ratio and optimizes the pattern for better handling on dry pavements. Therefore, Michelin X-Ice Snow offers trustworthy handling.

Wet Performance

Before Mounting

Wet performance sometimes is an issue for winter tires. Due to their aggressive lug-type pattern, the water inside of the tread can’t be thrown out easily. So that costs hydroplaning at high speeds. Well, Michelin X-Ice Snow has some words to say.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning is the floating feeling when you pass through the puddle at high velocity. That might seem insignificant but most accidents on rainy days are caused by hydroplaning. Hence, this is vital.

Due to its V-shaped pattern design, Michelin had a chance to increase groove width. Wide and V-shaped grooves go through the shoulders and throw the water out with ease. For this reason, hydroplaning isn’t an issue for it.

Michelin X-Ice Snow has magnificent hydroplaning resistance.

Wet Traction

Wet traction is a doddle for X-Ice Snow. Due to its extremely notched and full-depth sipes and fluffy compound, it grips like there’s no tomorrow.

Michelin X-Ice Snow has a unique wet traction capability.

Winter Performance

On Duuuuttyy

Since you’re looking for a winter tire, this section is a prime mover of this article. Unlike most people, I evaluate winter tires under three different dimensions. These dimensions are light snow, deep snow, and ice.  These dimensions are affected by different technical features. So, I’m going to evaluate them in different sections for better understanding.

Note: Michelin X-Ice Snow is rated with 3PMSF marking(severe winter rated).

Light Snow

Light snow is similar to wet performance. In that case, the self-cleaning ability also gets into the game.

Due to its highly-notched pattern and soft compound selection, X-Ice Snow provides tons of traction on light snow. Moreover, its inter-locked center section and v-shaped but lug-type pattern have a huge self-cleaning capability.

I strongly recommend Michelin X-Ice Snow for light snow.

Deep Snow and Ice

I’ve put up the best feature of FleX-Ice 2.0 for this section. FleX-Ice 2.0 has a unique technology that generates micro-roughness on the tread surface. That feature improves the ice and deep snow traction. When the surface of the compound becomes stiffer, it increases the grip ability on ice and deep snow.

Regarding deep snow and ice performance, its V-Shaped tread helps to increase contact patches. That might seem bad for deep snow.  Yet, its wide grooves and full-depth sipes dramatically increase its biting edges and that means unique traction. On the other hand, micro-roughness that is provided by a unique compound is a gift for ice traction. Winter tires need a bit of stiffness to provide ice traction. Especially when they don’t have a stud option.

Michelin X-Ice Snow is rare due to ice and deep snow performance. It’s one of the best in its category.

Comfort

Michelin X-Ice Snow has a high-silica compound. Tires with high silica compounds can maintain their flexibility. So, they generally offer a smooth ride but that’s not the only thing I have to talk about.

Comfort is also related to the tread pattern. Unlike most winter tires, X-Ice Snow has a directional pattern that’s going to improve your riding comfort for sure.

Michelin X-Ice Snow is exceedingly cozy tire.

Road Noise

Road noise is highly related to the void area ratio. As I mentioned before, Michelin X-Ice Snow has a perfectly optimized void area. Its interlocked center section minimizes the void area and offers a deaf ride.

On the other hand, FleX-Ice 2.0 compound brings some disadvantages in that case. When the surface of the tire relatively gets stiffer and sometimes that causes slight road noise.

I can’t say X-Ice Snow is the quietest tire, yet, it’s one of the best in its category(8.5 out of 10).

Tread Life

Aggressive shoulders increase loose ground traction

The Tread life of winter tires is generally short. However, you can increase your tires’ tread life with a couple of tricks.

Firstly, I don’t recommend using these tires above 7 Celcius degrees. If you’ll, your tread life will dramatically decrease. Moreover, your tire will wear unevenly and you’ll have handling issues.

Secondly, winter tires have a lower speed rating. Though, they’re not built for aggressive driving. Keep that in mind and that’ll help you to improve your tires’ tread life.

Regarding Michelin X-Ice Snow,  alpha plus compound have a huge impact out here also. When the tire surface becomes stiffer, it also wears slowly. Though worth reminding, this is a winter tire. Expecting above 50,000 miles tread life is kinda utopic.

Michelin X-Ice Snow has a decent tread life. One of the best in its category.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is related to rolling resistance and winter tires mostly have high rolling resistance. However, that’s not valid for Michelin X-Ice Snow.

Due to its lightweight and stick but durable compound, X-Ice Snow offers better gas mileage.

It’s going to be a bit assertive but Michelin X-Ice Snow offers almost the same gas mileage with all-season tires. I strongly recommend it.

Check Michelin’s product page for detailed information: https://www.michelinman.com/auto/tires/michelin-x-ice-snow

Warranty

Unlike other manufacturers, Michelin trusts its product and offers 40,000 miles treadwear warranty for X-Ice Snow. Folks, it’s hard to find a winter tire with a treadwear warranty.

Pirelli Scorpion Winter Review

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Scorpion Winter is a Pirelli’s performance winter/snow tire. It’s specifically designed for SUVs(best tires for), crossovers, and sport utility vehicles. For this reason, it’s available in rare rim sizes like 19” and 21”. Unlike most winter tires, it’s all-round tire that can offer cozy driving for all seasons. Yet, it has pros and cons. Let’s dig into it and see what it’s capable of.

While a v-shaped pattern offers high performance, a wide tread offers better traction

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Pirelli Scorpion Winter has huge traction capability on wet and dry grounds. Due to its specific design, it has a massive handling ability. Moreover, its light-snow performance is one of the best. However, it has limited deep snow and ice performance. Regarding tread life, Pirelli Scorpion Winter is similar to performance tires. Well, it offers traction and comfort instead of long-lasting rubber. Though, its tread life isn’t poor but average.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Most people complain about winter tires’ dry performance. Well, that’s totally normal due to their weighted structure and sticker compounds. In that case, handling tends to decrease. Thus, in this section, that’s one of my evaluation point. Let’s analyze it deeply.

Dry Traction

Dry traction isn’t an issue for winter tires due to their highly notched rubber and soft compounds. These tires are designed to grip in slippery and squishy conditions.

Pirelli Scorpion Winter has massive dry traction.

Handling

Dry handling is where Scorpion Winter steps ahead. Unlike most winter tires, this one has a directional design. Moreover, it has a modular center section that is used to optimize contact patch. This section works like a mast and enhances this tires’ steering capability. Lastly but most importantly, Pirelli Scorpion Winter is a light tire. That feature has a huge impact on quick steering response.

Pirelli Scorpion Winter has extraordinary handling on dry grounds.

Wet Performance

Wet performance can be tricky for winter tires. Most winter tires have a block design which has a negative impact on the solid contact patch. Moreover, winter tires lack circumferential grooves which is the main game changer for water evacuation(hydroplaning resistance). However, this judgment isn’t valid for Pirelli Scorpion Winter.

Pirelli Scorpion Winter has 2 circumferential grooves for a width of 255 and 4 for 265 or higher. Moreover, its open shoulder block design helps it to throw the water out. Therefore, Pirelli Scorpion Winter has a huge wet performance at high speeds.

Regarding wet grip, sipes and fluffy compounds do all the work. It’s solid.

Winter Performance

Scorpion Winter on Range Rover

As I mentioned before, Pirelli Scorpion Winter is a PERFORMANCE winter tire. So, expecting touring winter tire performance from it is kinda unrealistic. These tires are designed for mild winter performance on high-speed vehicles. Thus, they should sacrifice from deep snow and ice performance a bit.

Regarding light-snow,

Light snow is where it shines. Due to the slick compound and very well-siped rubber, it has a massive grip on light snow. Moreover, snow booster ridges that are placed inside the grooves increase their self-cleaning ability. For this reason, it’s a solid tire for light snow.

Regarding deep-snow,

Due to its self-cleaning ability, it can handle deep snow. However, this tire has shallow tread depth. This feature puts some limits on deep snow performance. If the thickness of snow is more than 4”, I don’t recommend using this tire.

Regarding ice,

Due to its multi-directional sipes, it can grip the ice with ease. However,  this design has lack asymmetry. It’s highly important for ice traction. So, I’m going to say average for ice performance.

Comfort

Pirelli Scorpion Winter on Mercedes G63

Due to its handling capability and soft compound, this tire offers a smooth ride. Its flexible but durable internal construction make you feel like on the cotton while drive through the bumbs.

Road Noise

Even though the symmetrical design and narrowed void area help it to reduce road noise, this tire is slightly noisy compared to the touring tires. However, it’s still one of the best winter tires. Pirelli also applies noise cancellation technology into the structure that reduces noise by half.

Tread Life

Tread life is where it comes short. In my point of view, that’s expected. Due to its fluffy compound and highly notched rubber, this tire could have high rolling resistance. However, the lightweight of this tire cover some of this deficiency. Yet, it’s not enough to promote long-lasting tires.

Pirelli Scorpion Winter has average tread life.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

Warranty

Pirelli doesn’t offer any tread life warranty for this product. However, a material warrant is still valid for the first 2/32” wear.

Note: Winter tires are designed to perform under 7 Celcius degrees. If you’ll use them over this temperature, they will wear quickly. Moreover, feather-type uneven wearing might occur. Material warranty doesn’t cover this wearing.

Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter Review

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Ultra Grip Winter is Goodyear’s studdable winter tire. You can use this tire on sedans, minivans, coupes, high-performance vehicles as well as light trucks that are only used passenger-oriented. Let’s dig into it and see what’s its cons and pros!

Its doubled center ribs increase the comfort, though, they make this tire a bit noisy

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter is a beast in light and deep snow. Moreover, its ice traction is unique. However, Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter offers limited steering response and cornering stability. Yet, its huge wet performance covers this deficiency. Lastly, it offers a smooth but slightly noisy ride.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Dry performance is consists of 3 different dimensions. Dry traction, steering response, and cornering stability. Due to winter tires intensely siped and soft rubber, they can handle dry traction with ease. For this reason, I will evaluate steering response and cornering stability in this section.

Let’s start with the steering response.

Steering response is mostly about the inter-locked center section. Even so, the most successful winter tire makers like Nokian and Continental use solid rib on the center section. When I first see this tire, I was pretty sure that this tire has a poor steering response. When the bloated void area of the center section combines with the soft compound, it causes a decrease in transmitting time. Thus, If you wanna buy this tire, be aware, it has below average steering response.

Regarding cornering stability, it’s pretty much the same with steering response. According to Goodyear, they use a stiff shoulder compound the increase cornering stability. Yet, weak sidewalls make you feel like floating while cornering. Well, I say below average for high-speed cornering stability.

Wet Performance

UltraGrip Winter's wide grooves improves its water evacuation capability

Wet performance is where Ultra Grip Winter is shining.

Winter tires have soft compounds due to increasing grip on slippery surfaces. When you merge this feature with the well-placed sipes, massive wet traction is naturally expected.

Due to its 3 circumferential grooves and open shoulder blocks, it can evacuate water easily. Therefore, it has massive hydroplaning resistance for high-speed usage.

Ultra Grip Winter is a trustworthy choice for wet grounds. I strongly recommend it.

Comfort and Road Noise

Soft compound and flexible sidewalls get into the game again and offer a smooth ride for your delicate butt 🙂

However, block type design has a significantly negative impact on road noise. Furthermore, the contact patch of the center section is limited for Ultra Grip Winter Tire. As a result, it’s a bit vocal tire.

Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter won’t give you a bumpy ride but it’s a slightly noisy tire.

Fuel Efficiency

Due to the lug-type tread pattern, it will increase your fuel consumption for sure. Moreover, sipes and soft compound increases their rolling resistance. That feature also has a negative affect on fuel mileage.

Winter Performance

This tire is built only but only for winter usage. Therefore, I don’t accept anything but perfect performance. Well, it meets my expectations.

Regarding light snow, it’s similar to wet performance. Water evacuation capability and grip are the game-changers. Well, it has a massive light snow performance.

Regarding deep snow, here is where it steps ahead. Due to lug type design and deep tread grooves, it offers huge traction. Moreover, its angled and serrated shoulder and center blocks can clean themselves very well and provide consistent traction.

Ice performance is convertible. Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter has a stud option that offers tons of traction on icy ground. For this reason, it has alpha plus ice performance with studs. However, its ice performance isn’t perfect but acceptable without studs.

Note: Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter has 3PMSF marking which means it has approved severe winter performance.

Tread Life

Due to its robust shoulder compound and lugged but directional pattern, it wears evenly. Furthermore, its tread depth is higher than its competitors. Hence, it has decent tread life. Even so, it lasts more than average all-season tires.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

Warranty

Goodyear doesn’t offer a treadwear warranty for this product. Yet, if you face uniformity on the first 2/32” part of wearing in the first year, they replace your tire with a new one or refund.

Sizes

You can use the below table to use if it fits your vehicle.

Most tire sizes begin with modifier letters(P, LT, etc.) that identify the type of vehicle or type of service for which they were designed. Here is a perfect guide for reading tire size –> https://tireterrain.com/how-to-read-tire-size/

Conclusion

Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter is a decent studdable winter tire. In that case, the market is narrow and options are limited. The other option is General Altimax Arctic 12. Both have cons and pros. The below table will help you to select the best fit for yourself.
