BF Goodrich Advantage Control Tire Review

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

BF Goodrich Advantage Control is a touring all-season tire that is built for drivers of sedans, coupes, crossovers, and SUVs. BF Goodrich claims that we can expect longevity and cozy ride and decent traction in all seasons. Well, I don’t think that it can make it all, though, it might be a perfect option for warm climates. Let’s dig into it and see what you can expect from this tire!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, BF Goodrich Advantage Control provides unique traction on dry surfaces. Moreover, it’s an expert in handling an extremely responsive tire. Due to its stiff compound, BF Goodrich Advantage Control’s tread life is one of the longest in its category. However, this compound limits its winter performance only with light snow. Furthermore, it creates slight road noise.

This tire is a perfect option for those who are living in southern regions.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Touring all-season tires are built to provide long-lasting tread life. Due to achieve this goal, they need a stiff and advanced compound. So, the stiff compound means a decrease in the traction capability.

Since providing traction in all-season is the building intent of all-season tires, they generally don’t have any issues regarding dry traction. However, in that case, the real game-changers are cornering stability and responsiveness.

Dry Traction

BF Goodrich Advantage Control has a 700 UTQG compound which means the tire has an extremely stiff compound. Though, this isn’t bad news at this time.

Due to providing decent traction, all-season touring tires have highly notched rubber, as a matter of course, tons of biting edges. These biting edges provide essential traction on dry surfaces. Hence, BF Goodrich Advantage Controle provides alpha plus traction on dry pavement.

Though worth reminding, the tire has a heavy-weight internal structure. So, if you’ll change from the grand touring tires(Michelin Defender T+H, Crossclimate 2, Goodyear Assurance Comfort Drive, etc.), you may feel a slight delay in acceleration.

Steering Response

Well, steering response isn’t a problem if you’re not going too fast. In this case, what we need to examine is their behavior while speeding.

So, the tire tests are concluding at 80 miles/hour. At this speed, the center section is the only part touching the ground. Hence, the center rib procures the communication between the steer and tire.

In my point of view, handling capability is the strongest point of this tire. Due to its continuous center rib and symmetrical tread pattern, BF Goodrich Advantage Control is a highly communitive tire.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is another strong point of this tire. Even though the tire has single nylon reinforcement(Uniroyal Tiger Paw has two), its sidewall is still too thick and resists the horizontal forces with ease.

The other point I want to mention is rim protectors. Unlike its competitors, the tire has a rim protector. The rim protector is the stiffest part of the tire. Well, the tires with the rim protector should have a relatively stiff sidewall compound. Otherwise, sidewall crack occurs due to stiffness difference between sidewall and rim protector. So, this is also a good sign for stable cornering.

BF Goodrich Advantage Control provides a safe and unshaken cornering. I strongly recommend it.

Wet Performance

Blue - Shoulder Slots / Red - Wide Circumferantal Grooves

Wet performance is related to tread design and compound stiffness. While compound stiffness is vital for wet traction, tread design is the only factor that affects hydroplaning resistance.

In this case, wet traction affects your starting, stopping, and acceleration. However, these metrics become kinda useless if your tire has a low hydroplaning resistance.

Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Wet Traction

In my point of view, the wet traction of BF Goodrich Advantage Control could be questionable(700 UTQG is a limit value for decent wet traction), if its sipes aren’t full-depth.

Even though it has a stiff compound, its angled and full-depth sipes provide enough biting edges for decent wet traction.

BF Goodrich Advantage Control isn’t superior but above average tire regarding wet traction.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning(aquaplaning) resistance is basically the water evacuation capability of the tire. It’s a vital feature. Especially for rapid drivers.

Due to its 4 circumferential grooves and open shoulder blocks, BF Goodrich Advantage Control has a trustworthy hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

I generally separate winter performance into three different layers. Light-snow, deep-snow, and ice traction. However, BF Goodrich Advantage Control’s rubber is 700 UTQG.

This value is too much for decent winter traction on deep-snow and icy surfaces.

Hence, I’ll only evaluate the light-snow performance of the tire.

Regarding light-snow traction,

It’s similar to wet performance. The only advantage of the tire is inclined center grooves. These grooves improve its self-cleaning capability, naturally, light-snow traction. This tire can take you out of unexpected situations, though, it’s not a good option for winter driving.

Regarding deep-snow traction, the tire has a shallow tread. Hence, its snow-chewing capability is limited. Yet, I like its void ratio. Moreover, its block-type shoulders can provide you with slight traction on deep snow. So, if you don’t see snow higher than an inch or two, it’ll work for you.

Regarding ice traction, I highly recommend to don’t using these tires on icy surfaces. This is a narrow and tall tire. If you combine these two with a stiff compound and moderate siping, there is no way that you can get trustworthy ice traction.

Note: All-season tires are built to perform above 7 Celcius degrees. Hence, their winter performance is limited unless they don’t have a 3PMSF.

Tread Life

Advantage control have a stiff compound. Hence, it can even handle mild off-road

Tread life is where it shines.

Due to its 700UTQG rubber, its wearing rate is 7 times better than the test tire. That doesn’t mean it lasts 7 times longer than its competitors. Yet, the tires with this UTQG last at least 80,000-100,000 miles.

Though, what I really like about this tire is it wears evenly. Due to its symmetrical and computer-optimized pattern, it wears evenly and that improves its tread life.

If treadwear is your priority, I strongly recommend the BF Goodrich Advantage Control.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

Warranty

Michelin offers two different treadwear warranties for this product,

V or W Speed Rating: 6 years and 65,000 miles treadwear warranty

H Speed Rating: 6 years and 75,000 miles treadwear warranty

The mileage fall by half if you use different sizes on the rear and front axle.

Uniformity Warranty: First 2/32” wear, limited with 1-year

Manufacturer Special Warranty: 60 days satisfaction warranty

Riding Quality

Riding quality is mostly related to the internal structure. The tires that can keep their shape and can flex enough provide the best riding quality.

Due to its two polyester casing and twin robust steel belts, BF Goodrich Advantage Control provides decent riding comfort. This is a highly suitable tire for inner-city driving.

Road Noise

This section might vary from person to person. In my point of view, instead of the tire itself, the tire you’re going to replace will be a decider.

BF Goodrich Advantage Control has a slightly more void area than its competitors. Hence, it might be slightly noisier than the tire like Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S. Yet, there is no big difference between mid-tier all-season tires.

Though worth reminding, if you’ll change from grand touring tires, you’ll notice a big noise and riding comfort difference. This is caused by category and price differences. You should go with grand touring tires if comfort is your priority.

BF Goodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain vs KO2 All-Terrain

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

BF Goodrich KM3 is a maximum traction tire that is often referred to as a mud-terrain tire. On the other hand, BF Goodrich KO2(review) is an off-road all-terrain tire that can perform on and off-road voluminously. Even though these two have similar product ranges, they offer slightly different things to the customers. Let’s see which one is more suitable for you!

BF Goodrich KM3 is bigger, wider and taller tire
BF Goodrich KM3 (Mud-Terrain)BF Goodrich KO2 (All-Terrain)

lifted vehicles owners who wanna put aggressive appearance,
people who are looking for a mud-terrain tire with the best on-road manners
Snowy and squishy regions,

ProsInsane off-road traction,

long-lasting rubber for a mud-terrain tire
Insane winter traction,

ConsNoisy and stiff ride, poor winter and ice performanceA bit noisy

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, BF Goodrich KO2 has better on-road manners compared to KM3. It is quiet. Moreover, it has longer tread life than KM3. It overperforms BF Goodrich KM3 in wet and winter conditions. On the other hand, BF Goodrich KM3 has exceptional on-road manners compared to other mud-terrains. Moreover, off-road performance is phenomenal.

All-Terrain Tires Cheat Sheet

Finding the ideal all-terrain tire among the plethora of options available can be overwhelming. But don’t worry, my team and I have taken on this challenge head-on. Besides our hands-on experiences with these tires, we also analyze thousands of customer reviews and test reports.

Please note that: Light-Duty is 1500 series, Medium-Duty is 2500 series and Heavy-Duty is 3500 series. If you do towing or hauling, I recommend considering at least Medium-Duty tires.

Durability

BF Goodrich tires have a good reputation due to their exceptional durability. In that case, durability consists of sidewall strength and puncture resistance.

BF Goodrich uses ‘Traction-Armor Sidewall Sculpture’ technology to increase sidewall durability. Well, it works. This tire is highly resisted against punctures. Obviously, that’s what you should expect from a mud-terrain tire.

On the other hand, BF Goodrich KO2 has a 15% stronger sidewall than the previous version. 3-ply sidewalls guarantee sidewall protection. Facing punctures is very unlikely with it.

Either BF Goodrich KO2 or KM3 is a very reliable preference. You can confidently put them on tough surfaces

Tread Life

Compering tread life of these two is not logical and also not fair. These tires were built with different intentions. So, expecting tread lives are also quite different from each other.

While mud-terrain tires generally last 40,000 miles, this number scales up to at least 60,000 miles at all-terrain tires. So, I will take these numbers into consideration.

Let’s start with BF Goodrich KM3.

BF Goodrich KM3 has a softer compound than most off mud-terrain tires. Well, that might horribly decrease its tread life depending on your operation. If you don’t be tough with it, you can use it for around 40,000-50,000 miles.

On the other hand, BF Goodrich KO2 has an average tread life. Well, this tire is focused on performance. So, expecting an impressive tread life is kinda unrealistic. It won’t last less than 60,000 miles.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

Road Noise

Due to its building intent, BFG KO2 offers better on-road manners

This section is easy peasy.

BF Goodrich KM3 as a mud-terrain tire has a heavy block tread pattern. That feature increases road noise significantly. Well, it is a common feature of mud-terrain tires. Yet, BF Goodrich KM3 is exceptional comparing other mud-terrains. It is not quiet but the noise is not that annoying.

BF Goodrich KO2 produces less road noise than KM3. Well, it is what we all expected. But compared to its competitors, there are better options to go with. Here is the one them.

BF Goodrich KO2 is the winner in this section.

Comfort

These two are decent due to comfort.

BF Goodrich KO2 has an aggressive design for an all-terrain. Well, it is built to perform on severe surfaces. Not highways. So, the comfort level is not as good as highway-focused all-terrain tires. Yet, it won’t disappoint you.

On the other hand, BF Goodrich KM3 has opposite features. It has not that aggressive tread design for a mud-terrain tire. Moreover, its compound is not hard as other mud-terrain tires. Well, comparing the mud-terrains, it is exceptional.

In short, BF Goodrich KO2 is a smoother tire. Yet, if you need a mud-terrain tire that provides a smooth ride, BF Goodrich KM3 is your tire.

Dry Performance

I evaluate dry performance under 2 different dimensions. Dry traction and steering response. Let’s dig into them.

Dry Traction

Mud-terrain and all-terrain tires are built for maximum traction. If you buy a premium brand like BF Goodrich, it’s improbable to face poor dry traction.

Both have trustworthy traction on dry ground. You can go either way.

Steering Response

The steering response mainly decreases when the tire gets bigger. The reason behind it is tire weight. When the tire gets heavier, you need more force to give it a direction.

BF Goodrich KM3 is a heavier tire. Hence, steering response is not as quick as BF Goodrich KO2. Yet, compared to other mud-terrains, it is legendary.

BF Goodrich KO2 has a slightly better steering response. Yet, if you want an aggressive tread design, you can confidently go with BF Goodrich KM3.

Wet Performance

Wet ground is where most mud-terrain tires are failed. There are two reasons for this. The first stiff compound can’t produce enough grip. Second, wide gaps between lugs decrease contact patches and cause hydroplaning.

I use BF Goodrich KM3 on wet ground. Well, it is way ahead of my expectations. They are not perfect but marginal. I never felt unsafe.

On the other hand, BF Goodrich KO2 is decent on wet surfaces. This tire has stiffer compounds than most all-terrain tires. So, it might lose its grip from time to time.

In summary, BF Goodrich KO2 is a better tire on wet. Yet, BF Goodrich KM3 has exceptional wet performance for a mud-terrain tire.

Here are my favorite wet ground tires for the above 3/4 ton pickups and SUVs. This list is also dedicated to the best diesel truck tires –> https://tireterrain.com/best-3-4-ton-truck-tires/

Winter Performance

As expected, BF Goodrich KM3 doesn’t have severe snow labeling. On the other hand, BF Goodrich KO2 is rated for severe winter conditions.

BF Goodrich KO2 can handle light and deep snow easily. While aggressive sidewalls ensure deep snow traction, the well-siped tread can handle light snow grip easy as apple pie. About ice, it is better than BF Goodrich KM3. Yet, there are better options.

On the flipside, deep snow traction is BF Goodrich KM3’s expertise. Deep grooves can overcome the packed snow and provide tons of traction. Light snow is not where it shines. Yet, it has quite an impressive performance compared to the other mud-terrains. Ice… Don’t use mud-terrain tires on ice. That one also has very satisfying manners on ice.

A side note here: Understanding the snow performance of all-terrain tires can be quite challenging. For those who find it perplexing, I’d like to direct your attention to a helpful resource: “6 Best All-Terrain Tires for Snow by AT Tire Category“ This article is specifically designed to assist you in making informed decisions regarding all-terrain tires in snowy conditions.

Off-Road Performance

Kinda in love with BFG KM3's appearance

Off-road performance is where these two come to the boil. They are head to head on almost every surface. Let’s classify them due to the surface.

Dirt and Gravel

This section will fulfill your need if you aren’t an overlander.

First of all, both are very trustworthy options. These tires are built to produce traction. Dirt and gravel are like shelling peas to them.

About dirt, nothing much to discuss. They are great! In that case, I would like to give some information about KM3. This tire has a phenomenal self-cleaning ability. Moreover, notched shoulder design has a significant effect on dirt grip.

About gravel, these two have powerful sidewalls. So, a puncture isn’t an issue. Moreover, BF Goodrich KO2 has a specific compound that prevents cut and chipping issues. On the other hand, BF Goodrich KM3 is performing flawlessly on gravel. Well, it can’t resist cutting and chipping as well as BF Goodrich KO2.

Mud Performance

Most all-terrains fail on mud. Yet, BF Goodrich KO2 is not one of them. It has really aggressive design that can handle muddy surfaces easily.

On the other hand, BF Goodrich KM3 is a mud-terrain tire. Of course, it overcomes KO2 on mud. But, let me tell you something. These tires are unbeatable on mud. Spinning is not an issue. You have to worry about how to wheel these tires in the mud. They are sticky as hell!!!

Rock Performance

Rock traction is not a problem for mud-terrain tires. Well, KM3 performs yummy on the rock.

In that case, BF Goodrich KO2 is the exceptional one. In my point of view, it is the best all-terrain tire for rock driving. Its ability to crawl under air-down conditions is unique.

Both options are trustworthy.

BF Goodrich KO2 Review

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

The BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 is considered the pioneer of off-road all terrain tires, with its origins dating back to the mid-1970s. The latest generation of the KO2 was introduced in 2015, and since then, BF Goodrich has sold a remarkable 5 million units of this tire. It has gained a reputation as one of the best all-terrain tires ever produced, earning its status as a legend in the industry. However, the question remains: does the current version of the KO2 live up to its past glory? Let’s find out!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, I hold the view that the BF Goodrich KO2 is an exceptional tire that caters to the needs of off-road enthusiasts. It boasts impressive grip and traction on loose and challenging terrains, making it a top choice for off-road adventures. Additionally, it carries severe snow marking, indicating its capability to perform well in winter conditions. While it excels in most winter scenarios, it may have some limitations on icy surfaces. In terms of wet performance, the BFG KO2 may not be at the forefront of the market, but it meets the requirements expected for an all-terrain tire. It’s worth noting that the strong and rigid sidewalls of the KO2 contribute to its robustness, but this may result in increased road noise compared to other tires.

On-Road Performance

Highway or pavement performance is hard to reach best for all-terrain tires. Yet, it is crucial since we’re living in cities.

Depending on your expectations, BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 can satisfy you. Dry ground is not an issue for them. Yet, wet performance can be questionable.

  • Cornering, steering, and stopping on the dry ground are roaring
  • Wet grip is good but the stopping distance might be more than average

BF Goodrich KO2 has acceptable on-road performance. Besides that, your driving manners could be critical on wet. Please be aware that, these are all-terrain tires. You should drive carefully on wet. Stopping distance is mostly more than regular all-season tires.

Road Noise

Road noise is hard to disable for block-design tires. It is common problem for them (Are all-terrain tires loud?).

Does BF Goodrich come through it?

The answer is yes and no also…

This tire is deaf at the beginning of its wear life. But, you will face road noise over time.

Pay attention to your rotation time due to adjusting the noise.

What Ply are BF Goodrich KO2?

Ply rate is vital for commercial usage. It’s also strongly related to durability. Nonetheless, ply rate is not the only variable that affects durability. The individual thickness of plies can be variable. So, a 2-ply sidewall can be equal to a 3-ply sidewall in total.

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 has 20% stronger sidewalls than the previous version KO. Unique Core Guard Technology can easily protect you from sidewall impacts.

  • It has 10-ply for available sizes (Except 15” inches rim, it has 6 plies)
  • 3-ply polyester cord sidewall ply construction (2-ply for C-Rated load range)

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 is one of the best regarding durability. A high load range and strong sidewall ensure that you will not have problems either with towing or high-loaded applications.

Winter Performance

BFG KO2 can chew the snow. That ability improve its traction capability

Snow performance can be tricky sometimes. It is changeable depending on snow thickness. In this article, we will separate the two. Light snow and thick snow(Are all-terrain tires good in snow?).

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 has 3-peak mountain snowflake marking for all sizes. That’s kinda proof of how good it’s in snow.

Yet, it’s worth remembering, this feature only covers thick snow.  In light snow, tires will perform like on wet. That’s the only weak spot we’ve found out for BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2.

  • Outstanding thick snow performance
  • Average light snow performance
  • Poor ice performance

We strongly believe that this tire is perfect for snowy regions.  High evacuation capability handles all conditions on snow. Though, it is not the best tire for ice.

Wet Performance

Wet roads are enemy or all-terrains. Deep lugs and sipes are struggling with evacuation. That decreases hydroplaning resistance and increase stopping distance (Are all-terrain tires good in rain?).

Our tire has the same issue. It has acceptable wet traction performance due to the intensity of sipes. Yet, low hydroplaning resistance will increase your stopping distance.

You can trust BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 on wet grounds. However, these tires are not made for on-road. You might want to keep your speed below 70 mph.

Mileage

Tread lasting time is correlated with driving habits, rotation timing, and tire compatibility. Well, it is changed from customer to customer (How long do all-terrain tires last?).

Tread life is the weakest point of BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2. However, BF Goodrich offers you 50000 miles tread warranty and keeps you on the safe side.

  • Wear tread life for loaded applications
  • Even wearing can be a flip coin. Do not miss rotation timing.

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 is a performance tire. Most competitors will beat it on tread life. Yet, the king stays as a king.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

How Thick is the Tread on BF Goodrich AT KO2?

Tread depth is almost stable for all sizes.

It is 15/32” except below sizes.

  • LT215/65R16
  • LT225/65R17
  • LT245/65R17
  • LT255/65R18

Off-Road Performance

No doubt, BF Goodrich All-Terrain KO2 is one of the best all-terrain tires that has been released. It has strengthened its reputation since being announced as Baja Champ.

Strong sidewalls and enlarged lugs guarantee traction on all surfaces. Aggressive shoulder design also handles any kind of deep mud, sand, etc.

  • Outstanding performance on dirt
  • Sand is tricky. Yet it can handle it very well
  • Mud traction… It is not best but still better than most
  • Rock performance in a class of one’s own

BF Goodrich All-Terrain KO2 is a beast on all surfaces. It is an off-road expert. Special sidewall tech will avoid you from any kind of punctures.

Mud Performance

It might offer better self-cleaning. Yet, this is a good amount of mud tracton for low depth tread

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 is the all-around tire. It can handle off-road manners perfectly while does not sacrifice from on-road manners. But there are some questions about mud performance.

Mud is tough. Soft mud can make you stuck too deep. Well,  shoulder design is key in that case. We love this shoulder design. Serrated and aggressive shoulders ensure all-way traction. At the same time, deep sipes close to the shoulders clean the tread very well.

It is not the best mud-terrain tire. However, it is one of the best among all-terrains.

Does BF Goodrich KO2 Loss Traction when Worn?

Loss of traction is a common problem in late tread life. It is caused by sipes with short depth. When the tire is worn, it loses most of the sipes, and traction decrease significantly.

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 has full-depth sipes. That will guarantee continuity of traction.

Though worth remembering, uneven wearing can also cause this issue. Stay sharp about rotation timing.

Size Selection

Before we dive into selecting the right tire size, it’s essential to understand the tire standards that manufacturers follow.

Technical Standards & Regulations

In Europe, the tire standardizing organization is called ETRTO. In the United States, it’s The Tire and Rim Association (TRA), while in Japan, it’s the Japanese Automobile Tire Manufacturers Association (JATMA). Although there may be other organizations, they generally align with one of these three.

When it comes to passenger car tires, TRA designates them by placing the letter “P” in front of the size to indicate conformity to the TRA standard. On the other hand, ETRTO and JATMA do not use any letters, which can sometimes be confusing when determining which standard is being used.

For light truck tires, TRA uses the letters “LT” in front of the tire size, while JATMA places the letters “LT” after the size. ETRTO, however, uses the letter “C” after the size to indicate tires of this type.

In the realm of medium truck tires, ETRTO uses the letter “C” after the size to designate tires designed according to their standard. In contrast, TRA and JATMA do not use any letters in this context.

Now, here’s what’s essential: Tires with the same dimensions (size) may have different maximum load capacities depending on the standard being followed. So, it’s crucial to consider the relevant standard when choosing tires.

When it comes to load capacity designations, “SL” (Standard Load) and “XL” (Extra Load) are used for all passenger car tires, regardless of which standard is being followed. In the ETRTO standard, “Reinforced” is also used as an alternative to “XL.”

Load Range, on the other hand, is specific to TRA. ETRTO and JATMA use the term “Load Index.” While TRA references Load Indexes, it’s important to note that the values provided are approximate.

To sum it up, understanding the tire standards and designations is vital as they play a significant role in determining the right tire size and load capacity. By considering the appropriate standards, you can make an informed decision when selecting tires that meet your vehicle’s requirements.

How to Select the Right Tire Size Based on Your Requirements?

When it comes to selecting tire sizes for your vehicle, it’s important to keep in mind that most vehicles offer more than one original equipment size. Let’s take the 2019 Ford F-150 Lariat Crew Cab 4WD as an example. You have three different tire size options: 275/55R20 SL, 275/65R18 Load Range C, or 275/65R18 SL.

Note: I use Toyo Open Country AT3 for an example tire. You can use this link to see tire options for your vehicle and then make a comparison between the sizes:

Let’s focus on comparing the 275/65R18 SL and 275/65R18 Load Range C options for a more detailed comparison. Your decision should be based on your priorities. If you prioritize a smooth ride and better handling, the SL option is the way to go. On the other hand, if you value hauling or towing performance and tire longevity, the Load Range C option would be a better fit.

As a tire engineer, my perspective often revolves around load-carrying capacity. Generally, tires with higher load capabilities tend to provide a stiffer ride. However, there’s a bit of an illusion to consider. When you compare the two tires in the same size, the SL-rated tire may initially appear to have a higher load capability. But here’s the catch: P metric tires, like the SL option, need to be derated by a factor of 1.1 when used on a truck. Crunching the numbers reveals that the SL option actually has a lower maximum load capability. Additionally, it boasts a lower tread depth, which translates to better responsiveness.

The same principles I mentioned earlier also apply when comparing XL and E Load range tires. In summary, if your vehicle allows for Passenger Car or LT (Light Truck) tires, going with a passenger option will provide you with better on-road manners. However, if you find yourself venturing off-road frequently, own a working truck, or regularly engage in towing and hauling heavy loads, then LT tires are generally the better choice for your needs.

Couple of tips for towing;

  • Even though the load index of passenger car tires fits, when it comes to towing, sidewall stability is the issue. Hence, LT tires with Load Range C, D, or E provide better stability.
  • Generally, a load index higher than 119 is recommended for towing
  • Proper loading is important for even wearing. 60/40 rule should be followed. 60% of the weight should be on the front axle and 40%of weight should be applied rear axle of the trailer. Besides that, try to center load. Start with heavier ones if you gonna stack them up.

To wrap it up, selecting the right tires comes down to choosing the ones that align with your driving preferences and specific requirements.
