As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Firestone Destination LE3 is an affordable highway all-season tire that provides a very satisfying level of smooth and quiet riding experience. This tire can handle wet and dry conditions with ease. However, its winter performance is limited to light snow. While Firestone Destination LE3 offers excellent handling, it is also a great option if you want better MPG. However, the longevity of the tire is slightly behind the competition for light trucks. Yet, it’s still a great option if you’re looking for an affordable option.

Table of Contents

Handling

Highway all-season tires generally offer decent handling. Since these tires aren’t built for loose ground traction, they generally have a symmetrical pattern and rib-type design that improve the handling capability.

In addition to that, these tires are made for huge vehicles. Hence, durability is their priority.

For this reason, these tires have a stiff compound which increases handling capability in a good way.

Under these circumstances, it’s easy to say Firestone Destination LE3 offers decent handling. Yet, I would like to explain the reasons behind this.

In order to explain myself better, I prefer to divide this section into two.

Steering Response

Responsiveness is extremely important for highway all-season tires. These tires should have the capability to work under loaded conditions which include towing or hauling. Since responsiveness becomes vital under loaded conditions, responsiveness is a priority for highway all-season tires.

Things are quite the same for Firestone Destination LE3.

In this case, tread depth, compound stiffness, and pattern design are the game changers.

  • Higher tread depth decrease the steering response time. Firestone Destination LE3’s tread depth is lower than most of the highway all-season tires in the market.
  • Firestone Destination LE3 has a fluffier compound. Its UTQG rating is 700. Yet, 700 is a still good number for a decent steering response.
  • Firestone Destination LE3 has a relatively softer tread design. It has a rib-lug-type hybrid design like other highway all-season tires in the market. If you can check the placement of the center section lugs, you can clearly see that the main idea is interlocking these lugs for better steering response and handling.

Firestone Destination LE3 offers a satisfying steering response. If you’re an aggressive driver, it could be a good fit for you.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is related to the inner structure and it’s generally not an issue for highway all-season tires.

Firestone Destination LE3 has a durable inner structure that offers decent cornering stability.

In this case, the real game-changer is the extra nylon reinforcement. This reinforcement goes through the whole tire and its main duty is to keep the tire in shape while cornering at high speeds. Does it work? Absolutely.

As a result, if your priority is handling or satisfying on-road manners, I think Firestone Destination LE3 is one of the best you can get for this price level.

Riding Comfort

Riding comfort of highway all-season tires are also good because these are high-profile tires that have more air inside of the tire.

This might come a bit fancy but in fact, the air inside of the tread carries all the load. Hence, more air means a higher load index and a generally more comfortable ride.

Besides these natural advantages, Firestone Destination LE3’s design is slightly softer than its competitors.

Firestone Destination LE3’s center section is more compact than the others. Besides that its lugs are interlocked which increases the comfort level significantly.

Due to its symmetrical pattern and relatively softer tread design, Firestone Destination LE3 provides a highly comfortable driving experience.

Road Noise

Road noise is where this tire shines due to its softer center section design.

Generally, highway all-season tires have highly sectional ribs that provide a comfortable but sometimes slightly noisy ride.

Firestone Destination LE3 is a bit different. Even though its tread also has lugs, these lugs are interlocked vertically and horizontally.

Due to its low void area center section and blocky but a bit fluffy shoulder blocks, Firestone Destination LE3 provides one of the quietest rides in the market.

Wet Performance

Wide circumferential grooves and open shoulder blocks increase hydroplaning resistance

The wet performance of highway all-season tires is generally better than all-terrain tires. This is because highway all-season tires put more rubber on the surface. In another saying, these tires have fewer void areas.

Wet performance has two different dimensions that are completely different than the others. In fact, at some point, these two totally need the opposite features.

While one of these two dimensions is wet traction and it’s related to compound stiffness and sipe density; the other one is hydroplaning resistance which is highly vital, especially under the downpour.

Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Wet Traction

As I’ve mentioned above, wet traction is related to compound stiffness and sipe density.

The easiest way to understand decent wet traction is by checking to UTQG rating.

UTQG rating contains one number and two letters after that. The first letter rates the wet traction. A is the highest rating, continues B, C…

In this case, my limit stiffness is 700 which highway all-season generally doesn’t match with.

Unlike other highway all-season tires, Firestone Destination LE3 meets this criterion. Its UTQG rating is 700 A B. Which means it also has A-rating wet traction and B-rating heat resistance. I’m going to talk about heat resistance in the longevity section.

On the other hand, maybe you realize that Firestone Destination LE3’s sipe density is lower than most highway all-season tires in the market. This is because its compound is fluffier and provides a better grip.

It seems like Firestone trying to make tires that can provide decent traction and maximum comfort level. I can confidently say that you’ll not have any issues regarding wet traction.

Firestone Destination LE3 provides excellent wet traction.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance basically the water evacuation capability of the tread.  It becomes vital, especially at high velocity and under the downpour.

While going through the puddle, if you break, you may feel the flotation feeling. That’s hydroplaning and actually, it can be extremely dangerous.

Luckily, highway all-season tires have relatively narrower patterns than all-terrain tires which decrease the floatation level.

More importantly, the priority of these tires doesn’t off-road traction. Hence, manufacturers can use a relatively softer tread design which helps them to increase hydroplaning resistance.

In this case, circumferential grooves and open shoulder blocks do most of the job.

Firestone Destination LE3’s symmetrical pattern contains 4 circumferential grooves. Besides that this tire has a blocky shoulder design that provides a lot of open shoulder slots.

Moreover, you can see the deep and angled notches at the center section of the tread. These notches provide two things. Vertical biting edges and water evacuation. The shape of the notches directs water in the center section to the shoulders or grooves.

Firestone Destination LE3 offers trustworthy hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

First of all, if someone saying great about any highway all-season tires’ winter performance is lying.

These tires are built for huge vehicles and their main duty is to provide durability and a decent level of handling.

Because of that, highway all-season tires have a stiff compound that can’t get the 3PMSF marking.

3PMSF marking is the severe snow rating of the tires’ compound. If the tire doesn’t have this label, that means the compound of the tire becomes relatively useless under 7 Celcius degrees.

The above statement is what is written in the books. Yet, technology’s developing rapidly. In the last 4-5 years, the tire compounds maybe can’t get the 3PMSF label but can handle at least freezing temperatures.

So, if I have to talk about Firestone Destination LE3, I think it can be an assertive competitor in this case.

I would like to explain this for 3 different conditions,

Light-Snow Traction

Light-snow traction is actually what you should expect from highway all-season tires.

Unlike most people think, this is the most dangerous snow type.

The light snow can easily merge with dust and dirt and become slush or muddy. Hence, sliding and spinning are highly expected in this kind of weather condition.

So, Firestone Destination LE3’s fluffy compound gets into the game again here. Due to its fluffy compound, Firestone Destination LE3 provides a decent level of grip.

Besides that, its sipes are full-depth and 3D which provides vertical and horizontal grip at the same time. This is very important for light-snow traction.

Due to its 3D-siped pattern and fluffy compound, Firestone Destination LE3 provides reliable light-snow traction.

Deep Snow Traction

You can actually call this one packed-snow traction.

Unlike most people who think positively, I think Firestone Destination LE3 isn’t a good tire for packed snow traction.

First of all, the tire has a lower tread depth. Which is highly important regarding loose ground traction.

Secondly, Destination LE3’s center section isn’t blocky to provide decent deep snow traction. I like deep notches and I’m sure they gonna work but it’s still too far away from dedicated winter tires.

Last but not least, soft compound again. It still increases the biting capability.

Firestone Destination LE3 isn’t a perfect deep-snow tire but it can take you out of unexpected situations.

Ice Traction

Highway all-season tires generally have similar performance on the ice.

Firestone Destination LE3 has a slight advantage in this case. Its compound is softer and it can put more rubber on the surface.

For this reason, Firestone Destination LE3 is a good option for icy surfaces. Yet, I still recommend using a dedicated winter tire at least on the ice.

Longevity

Longevity is actually the only feature that I have doubts about.

First of all, the soft compound is a disadvantage in this case.

Besides that, the tire has B-rated heat resistance which means it’s gonna wear more quickly than A-rated tires. For instance, Michelin Defender LTX M/S has A-rated heat resistance and an 800 UTQG rating.

On the other hand, a compact and less notched pattern is a huge advantage in this case. Besides that, Firestone Destination LE3 is one the lightest of its segment. The huge advantage regarding tread life.

In a summary, I think Firestone Destination LE3 provides great tread life for CUVs and SUVs. However, it can be only a price/performance tire for a pickup owner who is looking for the longest tread life.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

Warranty

  • Firestone offers 70,000 miles treadwear warranty for this product
  • You can also buy & try this product for a 90-days. If you’re not happy with it, it’s free to return

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is where this tire shines.

Due to its lightweight and relatively lower sipe density, I strongly believe that Firestone Destination LE3 is one of the most housewifely tires in the market.

Off-Road Performance

Angled center section notches provide a decent level of mild off-road traction

The off-road performance of highway all-season tires is meh.

In fact, the main duty of these tires isn’t loose ground traction.

They can handle off-road because they’re durable and they have plenty amount of void area to provide a decent level of light-duty off-road traction.

Mild off-road traction only contains gravel and dirt traction.

Firestone Destination LE3 can handle some mild off-road conditions but it’s slightly behind the competition due to its fluffy compound and compact pattern.

Dirt: Dirt traction is related to gripping capability. Firestone Destination LE3’s fluffy compound is an advantage in this case.

Gravel: Firestone Destination LE3 can provide a decent level of gravel traction. However, its fluffy compound will definitely wear faster

Mud: Depending on the depth of the mud, it can be useful. Yet, its shallow tread can’t have enough void area for decent mud traction. It can still take you out of unexpected situations

Sand: Softer designs work better on the sand. It’s gonna be fine.

In summary, Firestone Destination LE3 isn’t a tire to buy if off-road traction is your priority. Besides its low-rated heat resistance, it’s also a bit soft for a decent level of off-road traction. So, dirt & gravel is okay but I recommend keeping it only occasionally.

Conclusion

Firestone Destination LE3 is a highway all-season tire that focuses on comfortable & quiet rides. It’s a great option for SUVs and CUVs looking for comfortable highway driving. Even though it can be used on light trucks, it provides lower tread life.

Firestone Destination LE3

Firestone WeatherGrip Review

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Firestone Weather Grip is an all-weather tire that can be used on sedans, coupes, SUVs, crossovers, and station wagons. Since it has a 3PMSF marking, it’s a perfect solution for those who are looking for a one-tire solution for a whole year long. All-weather tires are slightly different than all-season tires. The difference brings along advantages and disadvantages. Let’s dig into it and detailly analyze them!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Firestone Weathergrip is a unique tire regarding dry and wet performance. Though, what makes Firestone Weathergrip special is its winter traction no matter how icy the surface is. It outperforms even some winter tires in every winter condition but ice. Moreover, it has a highly smooth ride for its aggressive design. However, its tread life isn’t satisfying as its other features, and it’s a slightly noisy tire.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Dry performance can be evaluated under three different sub-titles which are dry traction, cornering stability, and steering response.

While dry traction is a piece of cake, steering response and cornering stability sometimes can be an issue due to aggressive design and relatively heavy internal structure.

Let’s see how Firestone Weathergrip performs under these circumstances.

Dry Traction

All-weather(see the best ones) and all-season tires are the improved versions of summer tires regarding traction. Even though these improvements are mainly focused on cold-weather traction, they also have a huge impact on dry traction.

Due to its extremely notched rubber and fluffy and sticky compound, Firestone Weathergrip has outstanding dry traction capability. Yet, in my point of view, this feature is a must for all-weather tires(see the best ones). So, nothing much to be impressed with.

Steering Response

Steering response is related to two technical features. The weight of the tire and a pattern type.

Regarding weight, Firestone Weathergrip has an extremely light structure which is a huge advantage for some cases. Well, steering response is one of them. Light-weight tires need less force to turn each side. Hence, they generally have a quicker steering response.

Moreover, the design of the Firestone Weathergrip is directional. Luckily, this is a massive advantage for rapid steering response. In that case, its asymmetrical and sectional center rib will slightly decrease your steering response. However, its extremely soft compound creates an advantage out here and gives this tire cannonball steering response.

Firestone Weathergrip is a reliable option for quick steering response. Though worth reminding, the response time tends to decrease in cold weather conditions. This is a natural reaction of the tire. I’ll talk about it detailly in the winter performance section.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is totally related to tires’ internal structure. Especially, sidewalls.

In this case, strong sidewalls are the game-changers. Due to complete this mission, Firestone uses an extra nylon reinforcement. This reinforcement helps the tire to keep its shape while cornering at a high pace.

Firestone Weathergrip has trustworthy cornering stability.

TireRack has tested this tire with General AltiMAX 365 AW. If you’d like to see  results: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/chartDisplay.jsp?ttid=267

Wet Performance

Its extremely siped rubber contains tons of biting edges

The wet performance of all-season tires is generally unquestionable. Due to their rib-type designs and continuous circumferential grooves, their wet performance is decent.

However, the softness of the compound also affects wet performance. Especially, hydroplaning resistance. In that case, the firm compound works better.

Under the light of information above, let’s evaluate Wintergrip’s wet performance.

Wet Traction

Wet traction is where it shines. Due to its exceedingly notched rubber and fluffy compound, it has extraordinary dry traction capability.

Firestone Weathergrip has trustworthy wet traction. Yet, wet traction isn’t something you have to worry about for all-weather tires. The real issue is hydroplaning resistance.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is also known as aquaplaning. It’s basically the skate feeling when braking at high speed while it’s raining. It’s vital and all-about water evacuation capability.

Due to their increased void areas, all-weather and winter tires sometimes struggle because of hydroplaning. In this case, a solid contact patch is a game-changer.

Based on its 4 circumferential grooves and optimized contact patch, Firestone Weathergrip has an alpha plus hydroplaning resistance. In that case, its directional pattern also helps a lot.

Winter Performance

Keeping the tread clean is the key for decent winter performance

Because of the 3PMSF marking(what it is?), we’re all expecting an elegant winter performance from Firestone Wintergrip. However, 3PMSF marking states the winter harmony of the compound. So, decent and all-round winter performance also needs an efficient contact patch.

Unlike others, I would like to classify its winter performance according to particular winter conditions.

Light-Snow Traction

Light-snow traction is highly similar to wet traction. The only difference is self-cleaning capability is a must for decent light-snow traction.

I’ve already talked about the notches and soft compound. So, out here, I wanna talk about the sectional lugs. Instead of one big lug, Firestone prefers sectional lugs for this tire. This preference increases the movement capability of lugs. Moreover, self-cleaning capability.

Firestone Weather Grip has an awesome light-snow traction capability. I strongly recommend it.

Note: The steering response of all-weather tires tends to decrease for all-season tires. However, all-weather tires have a huge advantage in winter steering response due to their freezing-resist compounds.

Deep-Snow Traction

Deep-snow traction of all-season and all-weather tires are generally limited due to their low tread depth. In this case, the void area is another game-changer. However, increasing these two deal death blow to riding comfort. Therefore, the manufacturers usually don’t prefer to increase these two.

Regarding Firestone Weathergrip, things are a bit different. It looks like Firestone decided to cut some from comfort due to increased winter performance.

Firestone Weathergrip has a regular tread depth. Though, its void area ratio is higher than most all-weather and all-season tires. Therefore, its deep snow traction is higher than almost every tire in its category.

Note: All-weather tires are a combination of all-weather and winter tires. Well, they are usually closer to the all-season tires. However, Firestone Weathergrip’s priority is a winter performance. Hence, it’s closer to winter tires.

Ice Traction

Ice traction is related to the fulfilled contact patch. While deep snow traction needs a void area, it’s the opposite for ice traction.

The pattern is very-well siped, therefore it offers some traction on icy grounds. However, such a void area can’t make it the perfect tire for ice.

Even though it has above-average ice traction, Firestone Weathergrip’s ice performance is limited compared to winter/ice tires(see the list of them).

Ride Quality

Blocky patterns tend to make some noise

The ride quality of the tire is related to contour, internal structure, and compound.

Contour states the height and width of the tire. While wide tires offer better ride quality, this is the opposite of tall tires. Regarding Firestone Weathergrip(product page), it’s neither tall nor narrow tire. Well, due to its low tread, it can be counted as a relatively short tire. However, I think it’s totally similar to all-season tires. No plus or minus points for its contour.

Regarding compound and internal, it’s alpha plus. Due to its single-ply polyester casing, it has a flexible internal structure which makes it highly smooth while going through the bumps. Moreover, its compound is fluffy as hell. Therefore, unlike most Bridgestone and Firestone tires, it’s an exceedingly cozy tire.

Fuel Efficiency

Due to its fluffy compound, it has high rolling resistance. Well, too much sipe also negatively impacts it.

Even though it’s a lightweight tire, it still consumes a bit much gas. I don’t recommend it for commercial usage.

Road Noise

Road noise is where Firestone gives away for better winter performance.

Firestone Weathergrip has an increased void area ratio. This ratio is a bit higher than regular all-season tires. Moreover, its sectional center works have a negative impact in that case.

If I’ll say this tire is extremely noisy, it would be unfair. However, compared to other premium-level all-weather tires, it stays a bit behind. Yet, I think this increase in noise level covers the improvement in the winter performance.

Tread Life

The Tread life of all-weather tires is lower than most all-season tires. Well, that is caused by their softer compounds. A side note for here, 3PMSF marking generally decreases the tread life by about 15%.

Firestone Weathergrip has a short tread life for a premium all-season tire. However, you’ll get an all-season tire with winter performance in return for some tread life. I take this trade every time.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

Warranty

Firestone offers 65,000 miles treadwear warranty for this product. So, if you’ll rotate your tires every 5,000 miles, even though you don’t reach 65,000 miles, you’re free to replace them.

Firestone also offers 90 days buy&try guarantee. As a former Bridgestone engineer, I don’t buy it. 90 days isn’t enough to evaluate a tire.

Firestone Destination AT2 Review

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan

Firestone Destination AT2 is an on-road all-terrain tire that has been released in late 2019. It can be used on full-size SUVs, crossovers, and Jeeps. Though worth reminding, it’s not an efficient tire for above 3/4 ton pickups (list of best tires). Let’s see what’s its cons and pros!

The relatively slim sidewall protectors of Firestone Destination AT2 is a kinda sign of limited off-road capability

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Firestone Destination AT2 is a long-lasting and fuel-efficient tire. Due to its well-optimized pattern, Firestone Destination AT2 provides extremely satisfying on-road manners. It offers a quiet and smooth ride. Moreover, its wet and dry ground performance is unique. It’s also a good choice for mild winter conditions (3PMSF). However, it isn’t a good pick for adventure and severe off-road.

Table of Contents

Tread Appearances

Red- Lug Type Shoulders, Green – Rib Type Center

Firestone Destination AT2 has a bit different pattern design than regular all-terrain tires. Most all-terrains have only a lug-type tread pattern that increases their loose ground traction significantly. In return, they sacrifice from the comfort and sometimes steering response.

Due to avert these negativities, Firestone use a hybrid type design. Destination AT2 has a rib-type center section and lug-type shoulder sections. The rib-type center section decreases the void area in the center section and reduces the road noises. Furthermore, it works like a mast and helps you to steer more responsively.

On the other hand, lug-type shoulders maintain the loose ground traction and help it to evacuate water more quickly.

Lastly, shoulder bites. While shoulder bites improve Destination AT2’s traction, they also provide a bare-knuckle looking. Though worth reminding, its biters don’t go through the sidewall. So, you can’t use it on an adventure like BF Goodrich KO2.

Fuel Efficiency

Due to its perfectly optimized void area and notches, this tire has very satisfying rolling resistance compared to its competitors. Moreover, it’s light as a feather. I can confidently say this is an eco-friendly tire. Your fuel mileage will be rump up unless you don’t replace it with an all-season tire.

Comfort and Road Noise

Firestone Destination AT2 is a tire that focus on satisfying on-road manners

Hybrid-type pattern offers a more smooth ride than lug-type patterns. Well-aligned center lugs hit the ground in order and absorb the bumpy feeling significantly. Moreover, its gradual rubber is stiff outside and getting softer through the carcass. This feature increases its flexibility and absorbs the reaction force that reflects from the road.

Regarding road noise, this tire is deaf. Road noise is mostly related to the void area ratio of the center section. Rib-type and inter-locked center sections increase their contact pitch and provide a quiet ride.

This tire has unique road noise and comfort. I can confidently say that it’s more on-road tires than an off-road tire. I strongly recommend it for highway usage.

Dry Performance

Dry performance can be evaluated under 3 different dimensions. Dry traction, steering response, and cornering stability. Let’s start with the first dimension.

Dry traction is easy to reach for an all-terrain tire. Due to its lug-type tread pattern, its grip ability is higher than all-season tires. Regarding Destination AT2, as I mentioned above, it has a hybrid type tread pattern. Due to its lug-type shoulders and inner shoulder section, it has phenomenal dry traction. Moreover, well-siped rubber increases its grip ability and provides consistent grip.

Steering response is where it steps ahead. Its rib-type center behaves like a support bar and helps it to turn both ways easily. It has a unique steering ability. This feature increases its highway capability in a positive way.

Lastly, cornering stability. In that case, it’s not the best but average. Due to its fluffy sidewalls, it flexes a bit more than regular all-terrain tires at high speed. No worries, it’s not vital. I’ve stated it cause you might not like that floating feeling.

Firestone Destination AT2 is a beast regarding dry performance. It has unique traction and steering response. Yet, you might feel slightly floaty while cornering.

Go for ItStay Away
Satisfying on-road mannersIf you need a tire for adventure
For a smooth and quiet rideIf you have 3/4 ton or above light truck(Ram 250, F250, F350 etc.)
Long lasting rubber
Mild snow conditions

Wet Performance

Wet performance is muddy for all-terrain tires. While they need a stiff compound for durability, however, they also need a fluffy compound for better grip. Though, an optimized tread pattern saves lives again.

Due to its 3D full-depth sipes, Firestone Destination AT2 provides consistent wet grip over time. Moreover, its full-depth and perfectly sized grooves improve its water evacuation ability with the help of open shoulders. That feature prevents hydroplaning.

Tread Life and Durability

Tread life is the most powerfull side of Destination AT2

Tread life is where Firestone tires step ahead. Due to their special compound selection, they generally last longer than their competitors.

The above info is also valid for Firestone Destination AT2. While optimized rubber offers better wearing, solid center rib, and increased surface help it to wear evenly and offer massive tread life.

Regarding sidewall durability, I can’t say the same thing that I’ve said for tread life. This tire is built for better on-road manners. Hence, it needs more flexible and softer sidewalls. Its sidewalls can resist puncture. Yet, tough sidewall impacts like that you face while rock crawling will hurt it very badly.

Firestone Destination AT2 lasts longer and offers huge durability for mild operations.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

Winter Performance

Winter is where Firestone Destination AT2 is shining. It’s labeled with 3PMFS. That means you can use it even in the hardest winter conditions.

Regarding light snow, it works almost the same as wet ground. Perfect grip and perfect evacuation for melted snow. Moreover, its narrower grooves(for an all-terrain) can clean itself perfectly and offers consistent traction.

Due to its lower tread depth, its deep snow traction is very limited. Serrated shoulder biters help it a bit but I don’t recommend it for deep snow usage.

About ice, due to its less void area, it’s better than most all-terrain tires. Yet, don’t forget, these are not winter tires. Your driving skills are a game-changer in that case.

If you have a heavy-duty truck, I recommend you to check this article out for a durable and solid winter tire!

Off-Road Performance

It's off-road performance is limited to mild off-road

Off-road performance can be considered under 4 different dimensions. Let’s start with the first one.

Dirt and Gravel

Since this tire is built for mild off-road applications, I’ve decided to put these two together for better understanding.

Dirt performance isn’t an issue for all-terrain tires. Regarding their grip ability, they can easily handle dirty surfaces. In that case, the crucial part is compact dirt. Well, Firestone Destination AT2 also performs very well on compact dirt. Due to its self-cleaning ability, it throws the compact dirt out with ease. Herewith, it offers consistent traction even on wet grass.

Regarding gravel performance, it’s also very efficient. Due to its serrated shoulders and stone ejectors, while it bites the loose ground, it also holds the stones out of grooves and helps to increase durability.

Firestone Destination AT2 is a solid pick for gravel and dirt. I strongly recommend it.

Sand

All-terrain tires fail on the sand due to their high traction ability. They tend to dig the sand and that increases the stacking possibility.

Due to its narrowed void area, Firestone Destination AT2 has better performance than common all-terrain tires. I can’t say it’s unique. Yet, it has superior performance.

Mud

In that case, Firestone Destination AT2 has one strength and one weakness.

Due to its narrow void area and low tread depth, it has limited mud traction. Yet, its self-cleaning ability and evacuation capability enhance its wet performance.

Let’s say it has average mud performance. Yet, I don’t recommend it for adventures.

Check this article out if you need a straight mud-terrain tire!

Rock

Firestone Destination AT2 is a p-metric tire. Therefore, it has relatively weak sidewalls.

I don’t recommend it for rock crawling.

You can check this article out if you need something with a 3-ply sidewall!

Sizes

Bad news, it’s only available for p-metric sizes. In my point of view, it also shows the application range of this tire. It isn’t built with commercial intent.

Most tire sizes begin with modifier letters(P, LT, etc.) that identify the type of vehicle or type of service for which they were designed. Here is a perfect guide for reading tire size –> https://tireterrain.com/how-to-read-tire-size/

Firestone Destination XT Review

Updated: April 18, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan 2 Comments

Firestone Destination XT is an off-road all-terrain tire. It is mainly built for 3/4 ton, 1-ton pick-up trucks. Moreover, it’s a good pick for the body on frame SUVs like GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, etc. Hauling and towing are its expertise. Yet, it has some deficiencies. Let’s dig into it and see if it fits your application!

Due to its relatively compact pattern, it offers safe ride while towing or hauling

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Firestone Destination XT is the lightest tire in its segment. Hence, it can be used for a long period of time on air-down usage. Well, its responsiveness also gets a significant boost from the lightweight. Moreover, its wet and dry traction capability is highly praiseworthy. Due to its compact tread and stiff compound, Firestone Destination X/T is a perfect pick for hauling and towing applications and provides an extremely satisfying wear life.

Even though it’s severe winter rated and performs excellently in light snow and deep snow, its compound is too hard for reliable ice performance. Though worth reminding, it makes a slight noise, and sometimes its stiff structure can provide a bit stiff ride if you’re not used to using all-terrain tires.

All-Terrain Tires Cheat Sheet

Finding the ideal all-terrain tire among the plethora of options available can be overwhelming. But don’t worry, my team and I have taken on this challenge head-on. Besides our hands-on experiences with these tires, we also analyze thousands of customer reviews and test reports.

Please note that: Light-Duty is 1500 series, Medium-Duty is 2500 series and Heavy-Duty is 3500 series. If you do towing or hauling, I recommend considering at least Medium-Duty tires.

Tread Appearances

Firestone Destination XT Pattern(colors are dedicated on Dry Performance section)

Heavy-duty tires generally don’t look aggressive. Manufacturers focus on performance instead of good-looking. So, they sacrifice from aggressive looking. Well, Firestone Destination XT is an exception in that case. While maintaining its performance, it also looks as tough as a rugged-terrain tire.

Use ItDon’t Use It
Heavy-duty applicationsIcy conditions
Above 3/4-ton pickupsDaily driving(It’s LT tire. Though it has a hars ride)
Large(body on frame) SUVs, JeepsCrossovers, Unibody SUVs(if it’s not too heavy)
Mild winter conditions

Firestone Destination XT doesn’t have a rib/lug hybrid type pattern design like its rival Cooper Discoverer AT3 LTX or Michelin Defender LTX. It has lug type design with wide shoulders. As a result, it keeps its traction ability on loose surfaces. Moreover, its wide shoulder increases its comfort on highways.

Dry Performance

Dry traction isn’t an issue for all-terrain tires due to their aggressively designed rubber. Well, Destination XT provides huge traction on dry surfaces.

About handling, well-optimized pattern getting into the game. A wide shoulder combined with the interlock center section increases its contact patch and offers decent handling.

Lastly, steering. Steering is an enemy for lug-type tread patterns. In that case, the center section must be work like a circumferential rib and preserve stability. Well, I think Destination XT’s engineers made it very well. The middle center block supports each side with larger side blocks. Therefore, it works like a rib during the wheeling.

Comfort and Road Noise

Due to its wide shoulder design, well-balanced compound, and solid internal structure(2 steel belts support by a 2-ply polyester cord),  you don’t feel bumpy like driving a mud-terrain tire. That’s a huge plus.

On the other hand, it performs even better regarding noise cancellation. Due to its interlocked center section( explained in the tread appearance section), this tire is deaf for a heavy-duty tire. Moreover, its void area is narrower than most of its competitors. This feature also brings an advantage to noise cancellation.

Destination XT is quiet and offers a smooth ride. You can confidently go with it if these are your priorities. Yet, Firestone Destination AT2(review) could be a better selection if you wanna extend your riding conditions.

Fuel Efficiency

Due to its low rolling resistance and lightweight, Destination XT is one of the most fuel-efficient tires in its class. For comparison, it’s at least 1mpg better than BFG KO2 for every available size.

Wet Performance

While I’ve been researching this tire for my comparison articles, I was pretty impressed by its wet performance.

Its full-depth 3D sipes increase its biting edge density. This feature increases its biting capability on wet grounds and improves wet traction. However, this’s a heavy-duty tire. Therefore, its compound is relatively stiffer than regular all-terrain tires. That feature decreases its wet traction a bit. Yet, its wet traction is decent. Let’s say 8.5 out of 10.

The keynote speech is hydroplaning resistance. Its open shoulder blocks improve water evacuation and restrain hydroplaning resistance.  Due to its tread design(2 circumferential grooves), this tire doesn’t keep water inside of the tread. So,  you can confidently drive this tire at high speeds in the pouring rain.

Destination XT is a beast on wet surfaces. I strongly recommend it.

Winter Performance

It can chew the snow. This is an huge advantage for reliable deep snow performance

Winter is where Destination XT shines. Due to its specific rubber, it heats up quickly and maintains its gripping ability in cold winter conditions.

Destination XT is a severe snow-rated tire(3PMFS). Yet, it isn’t the perfect pick for all winter conditions.

Due to its full-depth sipes, it’s a monster on light snow. It can evacuate melted snow very well and avert hydroplaning.

Due to its staggered shoulder lugs, it has massive traction ability on deep snow. Moreover, its divided center lugs(3 pieces with 2 full-depth sipes) can work separately and increase its self-cleaning ability.

Ice is where it fails. Due to its low rolling resistance, its braking distance on ice is average. I don’t recommend it for ice usage.

Destination XT is a safe pick for light and thick snow. However, ice isn’t its expertise.

If you need a solid and durable tire for winter, I recommend you to check this article out!

Off-Road Performance

It can handle mild and severe off-road very well

Even though most heavy-duty tires can perfrom only in mild off-road applications, Destination XT makes a difference and can perfrom on most severe off-road conditions very well. Let’s dig into it!

Dirt and Gravel Performance

Dirt and gravel performance are what heavy-duty vehicles need most. Well, Firestone didn’t miss that point.

Due to its well-placed sipes, it has enough biting edges to provide a decent grip on dirt. However, this tire’s dirt performance is remarkable because of its ‘u’ shaped lugs. This design allows the lugs to move independently. As a result, increases self-cleaning capability significantly. So, its grip ability on dirt is a phenomenon.

Due to strategically placed stone ejectors, Destination XT doesn’t hold small stones on the shoulders and center section. Hence, it can maintain its traction on the gravel.

Destination XT can handle dirt and gravel with ease. You can confidently use it on these surfaces.

Sand

Here is the deal, all all-terrain tires tend to dig into the soft sand. Yet, Firestone Destination XT’s wide shoulders help it to float on sand and maintain its traction capability. Moreover, the tire is naturally wide. Therefore, it can stay on the sand more easily than most of the tires on the market.

Firestone Destination X/T is the master of all-terrain tires on sand driving. I strongly recommend it.

Mud

Due to its big side biters, it can grip compact mud very well. Moreover, its evacuation ability steps in again and helps it to move on muddy days. In this case, its deep and voided tread is the biggest assistant. Especially for the flotation sizes (these sizes specifically have 17/32” tread depth).

Firestone Destination X/T is an assertive candidate for best mud terrain tires. I can confidently say that it’s the best for 3/4 ton work trucks.

Yet, if you need a tire for adventure, you might want to check this article out.

Rock

Firestone Destination X/T is specially built for 3/4 ton or above trucks. Well, it should have strong sidewalls and it does. In my point of view, what makes this tire special is its lightweight even for these extremely strong sidewalls.

So, this lightweight is kinda proof of its alpha-plus air-down performance. It doesn’t get heated due to its thin but durable material. As a result, you can use this tire for an ages on air-down and doesn’t hurt the tire bead.

I’ve already talked about its traction and grip capability. Well, when you combine it with heat resistance, you can get one of the best rock-crawling tires.
