BF Goodrich Advantage Control Tire Review

Updated: July 29, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

BF Goodrich Advantage Control is a touring all-season tire that is built for drivers of sedans, coupes, crossovers, and SUVs. BF Goodrich claims that we can expect longevity and cozy ride and decent traction in all seasons. Well, I don’t think that it can make it all, though, it might be a perfect option for warm climates. Let’s dig into it and see what you can expect from this tire!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, BF Goodrich Advantage Control provides unique traction on dry surfaces. Moreover, it’s an expert in handling an extremely responsive tire. Due to its stiff compound, BF Goodrich Advantage Control’s tread life is one of the longest in its category. However, this compound limits its winter performance only with light snow. Furthermore, it creates slight road noise.

This tire is a perfect option for those who are living in southern regions.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Touring all-season tires are built to provide long-lasting tread life. Due to achieve this goal, they need a stiff and advanced compound. So, the stiff compound means a decrease in the traction capability.

Since providing traction in all-season is the building intent of all-season tires, they generally don’t have any issues regarding dry traction. However, in that case, the real game-changers are cornering stability and responsiveness.

Dry Traction

BF Goodrich Advantage Control has a 700 UTQG compound which means the tire has an extremely stiff compound. Though, this isn’t bad news at this time.

Due to providing decent traction, all-season touring tires have highly notched rubber, as a matter of course, tons of biting edges. These biting edges provide essential traction on dry surfaces. Hence, BF Goodrich Advantage Controle provides alpha plus traction on dry pavement.

Though worth reminding, the tire has a heavy-weight internal structure. So, if you’ll change from the grand touring tires(Michelin Defender T+H, Crossclimate 2, Goodyear Assurance Comfort Drive, etc.), you may feel a slight delay in acceleration.

Steering Response

Well, steering response isn’t a problem if you’re not going too fast. In this case, what we need to examine is their behavior while speeding.

So, the tire tests are concluding at 80 miles/hour. At this speed, the center section is the only part touching the ground. Hence, the center rib procures the communication between the steer and tire.

In my point of view, handling capability is the strongest point of this tire. Due to its continuous center rib and symmetrical tread pattern, BF Goodrich Advantage Control is a highly communitive tire.

Cornering Stability

Cornering stability is another strong point of this tire. Even though the tire has single nylon reinforcement(Uniroyal Tiger Paw has two), its sidewall is still too thick and resists the horizontal forces with ease.

The other point I want to mention is rim protectors. Unlike its competitors, the tire has a rim protector. The rim protector is the stiffest part of the tire. Well, the tires with the rim protector should have a relatively stiff sidewall compound. Otherwise, sidewall crack occurs due to stiffness difference between sidewall and rim protector. So, this is also a good sign for stable cornering.

BF Goodrich Advantage Control provides a safe and unshaken cornering. I strongly recommend it.

Wet Performance

Blue - Shoulder Slots / Red - Wide Circumferantal Grooves

Wet performance is related to tread design and compound stiffness. While compound stiffness is vital for wet traction, tread design is the only factor that affects hydroplaning resistance.

In this case, wet traction affects your starting, stopping, and acceleration. However, these metrics become kinda useless if your tire has a low hydroplaning resistance.

Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Wet Traction

In my point of view, the wet traction of BF Goodrich Advantage Control could be questionable(700 UTQG is a limit value for decent wet traction), if its sipes aren’t full-depth.

Even though it has a stiff compound, its angled and full-depth sipes provide enough biting edges for decent wet traction.

BF Goodrich Advantage Control isn’t superior but above average tire regarding wet traction.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning(aquaplaning) resistance is basically the water evacuation capability of the tire. It’s a vital feature. Especially for rapid drivers.

Due to its 4 circumferential grooves and open shoulder blocks, BF Goodrich Advantage Control has a trustworthy hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

I generally separate winter performance into three different layers. Light-snow, deep-snow, and ice traction. However, BF Goodrich Advantage Control’s rubber is 700 UTQG.

This value is too much for decent winter traction on deep-snow and icy surfaces.

Hence, I’ll only evaluate the light-snow performance of the tire.

Regarding light-snow traction,

It’s similar to wet performance. The only advantage of the tire is inclined center grooves. These grooves improve its self-cleaning capability, naturally, light-snow traction. This tire can take you out of unexpected situations, though, it’s not a good option for winter driving.

Regarding deep-snow traction, the tire has a shallow tread. Hence, its snow-chewing capability is limited. Yet, I like its void ratio. Moreover, its block-type shoulders can provide you with slight traction on deep snow. So, if you don’t see snow higher than an inch or two, it’ll work for you.

Regarding ice traction, I highly recommend to don’t using these tires on icy surfaces. This is a narrow and tall tire. If you combine these two with a stiff compound and moderate siping, there is no way that you can get trustworthy ice traction.

Note: All-season tires are built to perform above 7 Celcius degrees. Hence, their winter performance is limited unless they don’t have a 3PMSF.

Tread Life

Advantage control have a stiff compound. Hence, it can even handle mild off-road

Tread life is where it shines.

Due to its 700UTQG rubber, its wearing rate is 7 times better than the test tire. That doesn’t mean it lasts 7 times longer than its competitors. Yet, the tires with this UTQG last at least 80,000-100,000 miles.

Though, what I really like about this tire is it wears evenly. Due to its symmetrical and computer-optimized pattern, it wears evenly and that improves its tread life.

If treadwear is your priority, I strongly recommend the BF Goodrich Advantage Control.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

https://tireterrain.com/how-to-make-tires-last-longer/

Warranty

Michelin offers two different treadwear warranties for this product,

V or W Speed Rating: 6 years and 65,000 miles treadwear warranty

H Speed Rating: 6 years and 75,000 miles treadwear warranty

The mileage fall by half if you use different sizes on the rear and front axle.

Uniformity Warranty: First 2/32” wear, limited with 1-year

Manufacturer Special Warranty: 60 days satisfaction warranty

Riding Quality

Riding quality is mostly related to the internal structure. The tires that can keep their shape and can flex enough provide the best riding quality.

Due to its two polyester casing and twin robust steel belts, BF Goodrich Advantage Control provides decent riding comfort. This is a highly suitable tire for inner-city driving.

Road Noise

This section might vary from person to person. In my point of view, instead of the tire itself, the tire you’re going to replace will be a decider.

BF Goodrich Advantage Control has a slightly more void area than its competitors. Hence, it might be slightly noisier than the tire like Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S. Yet, there is no big difference between mid-tier all-season tires.

Though worth reminding, if you’ll change from grand touring tires, you’ll notice a big noise and riding comfort difference. This is caused by category and price differences. You should go with grand touring tires if comfort is your priority.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S Review

Updated: July 29, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a touring all-season tire that can be used on sedans, coupes, crossovers, and SUVs. Due to its vast product line(broadest of Uniroyal) and dirt-cheap price, it’s a popular selection inside the US. However, price and quality are generally proportional in the tire market. The excellent news, Tiger Paw Touring A/S is an exception. Yet, it isn’t a perfect tire. Hence, its defects may not meet your expectations. Let’s analyze this tire and see if it’s a good bet!

Moreover, due to its stiff compound, it’s a long-lasting tire. Furthermore, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a communitive tire and provides solid cornering capability(has unique cornering stability) while doesn’t sacrifice the quiet ride. However, it has a bit stiff ride and almost zero traction in winter if the tire doesn’t heat up.

Dry Performance

Even though dry performance is easy to achieve, some all-season touring tires face traction and handling issues due to the stiff compound of all-season tires.

So, evaluating dry performance under three different layers is the easiest way to expose it.

While dry traction is the last one to worry about, cornering stability and steering response sometimes stay behind if the manufacturer is obsessed with ride comfort and traction.

Let’s see them one by one.

Dry Traction

Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a great tire if you’re living in a hot climate. Even though it has a stiff all-season tread compound, its highly notched rubber has tons of biting edges.

Due to its perfectly optimized sipe density and compact tread, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides decent dry traction. You might feel a slight delay in acceleration before the tire heat up. Though, it’ll disappear after 10-15 minutes of driving.

Steering Response

Steering response is related to tread design and tire weight as well. Since the tire weight has a minor effect on it, tread design will be my evaluation point.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a symmetrical pattern that is an extremely good sign for a quick response time. Moreover, its continuous and robust center rib makes the most work in that case. Since this tire works as a pivot, it doesn’t flex too much and transmits the comments quicker. Hence, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a highly responsive tire.

Cornering Stability

Unlike steering response, cornering stability is completely related to the internal structure. If the tire doesn’t have tough sidewalls, there is no way that you don’t feel that floating feeling.

Since Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is mostly available in high profile sizes, most people think it has poor cornering stability. Well, that might be true if the Tiger Paw Touring A/S doesn’t have one of the strongest sidewalls in the market(in its category).

Due to its extra two-ply polyester sidewall, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides steady handling while cornering at high speeds.

Wet Performance

Symmetrical Pattern Design

Unlike common knowledge, the wet performance of tires should be evaluated under two different conditions. At high speed and low speed.

At low speed, the only thing you must need is traction. Hence,  one of our evaluating points is wet traction. Wet traction covers break, acceleration, and start.

On the other hand, at high speed, the tire gets warm and the compound becomes fluffier. Therefore, the grip capability of tire increase significantly. So, the only thing left to worry about is hydroplaning. Hence, hydroplaning is the second evaluating point.

Let’s examine them one by one.

Wet Traction

Wet traction is related to compound stiffness and the amount of biting edges.

In this case, zigzag shoulder sipes and angled center sipes work perfectly. Moreover, the tire is heavyweight compared to its competitors. Hence, it heats up a bit quicker and slicks the ground way much better. So, in that case, I was a bit worried about the beat fatigue due to an over-heated tire. Well, I have checked and see the tire has an ‘A’ temperature rating. For a double-checked, I’ve made some research on the web and didn’t see any bead issue. I was relieved.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a unique traction capability on wet pavement. I strongly recommend it.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is basically the water evacuation capability of the tire. In this case, if the tread holds the water at high speed, the tire loses contact with the surface and the vehicle doesn’t respond to any input. This is called hydroplaning or aquaplaning.

Due to its 4 wide circumferential grooves, relatively wide horizontal grooves, and open shoulder slots, Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides trustworthy hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

Unlike common knowledge, all-season touring doesn’t build to perform in winter. Well, due to their wide tread, grand touring all-season tires can handle light snow, and some of them even deep snow. Yet, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is an all-season touring tire. Though, it has a wide tread which is a good sign for winter performance.

So, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a highly limited winter performance. However, it can be still useful in some cases.

Light-Snow Traction

Light snow traction is similar to wet traction. However, in this case, the weather is cold, so, the compound is stiffer.

The compound of all-season tires can fittingly perform above 7 Celcius degrees. Below this temperature, the tire loses grip, herewith, traction.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a stiff compound. Therefore, it might put you in trouble if you’ll try to leave for work on a snowy day. Yet, if you can heat the tires up, I’m pretty sure, they will provide decent traction.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has limited light-snow traction. It can take you out of unexpected situations. Though, I don’t recommend them if you see snow for a couple of months.

Deep Snow Traction

Due to its robust shoulders and center rib, the tire can chew the snow. Yet, its stiff compound can’t bite any loose ground at all.

This tire doesn’t have enough void area for loose ground traction. Deep-snow isn’t its expertise.

Ice Traction

If I were you, I never use this tire on icy surfaces. The tire has a compact tread. Well, this is an advantage for icy grounds. However, it’s too stiff to bite slippery and icy surfaces.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a 3 season tire. I don’t recommend using this tire on ice or in severe winter conditions.

Noise

Its void area ratio is increasing after the half of its wear life

Due to their compact tread and generally rib type and continuous center rib, all-season touring tires don’t tend to make too much noise. However, some manufacturers sacrifice noise reduction to get better loose ground traction. Well, Uniroyal isn’t one of them.

Due to its continuous and robust center rib and optimized void area, Tiger Paw Touring A/S offers a quiet ride. However, its 3-D sipes enlarge as they wear. Hence, this tire can make some noise at the late stage of its wear life.

Ride Quality

Ride quality is affected by internal structure as well as tread design.

Regarding tread design, it promises a smooth ride. However, yet again, its stiff compound has a minor negative impact on riding quality. On the other hand, its internal structure is killing it. This tire has an extremely durable and tough internal structure. Hence, it has a bit bumpy and stiff ride. Yet, it won’t be bearable. If were you, I trade a slightly stiff ride for long-lasting rubber the whole day long.

Tread Life

Treadlife is where this tire shines. Even though it doesn’t have an 800 UTQG, due to its symmetrical pattern and true-contact tech(optimized contact patch) that enables the even wear, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides satisfying tread life. Especially for this price level. It’s a golden opportunity.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S Review

Updated: November 11, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Michelin Defender LTX M/S is a highway all-season tire that has a wide product range. This tire can be used on SUVs, commercial vans, sport utility vehicles, and any light truck. Due to its longevity and durability, it can be ever used on heavy-duty 3/4 ton or above pickups. Even though it’s an all-season tire, due to its high durability, it can even handle some off-road. Yet, knowing its limit is highly vital to get maximum performance from it. I pushed the limits a bit. Let’s dig into it and see what it’s capable of.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S has a rib + lug type pattern that enables off-road performance

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Michelin Defender LTX M/S has unique traction on wet and dry surfaces. Moreover, its light snow capability is highly acceptable and it can handle icy surfaces as well. The long-lasting tread is its main feature. Furthermore, surprisingly, it can handle mild off-road very well. However, Michelin Defender LTX M/S has a bit stiff ride and makes some noise after half of its tread. Though worth reminding, its loose ground performance is limited to a couple of inches.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Traction, steering response, or cornering stability. No matter what feature are we talking about, Michelin Defender LTX M/S’s performance is unquestionable. In my point of view, its design is superior in its category.

For a better understanding, I’m going to separate dry performance from the above features and explain them one by one.

Dry Traction

Even though it’s a narrow tire, due to its exceedingly siped rubber, it can provide tons of traction on the dry ground.

Well, it’s obvious that Michelin put hauling and towing into consideration at the design stage of this tire. Its compound is stiff, though, its block-type shoulders and sectional ribs provide the necessary void area for a perfect traction ability.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S has an alpha plus dry traction capability.

Steering Response

Rib-type pattern tires have a quicker steering response

Due to its narrow tread and robust center rib and shoulders, Michelin Defender LTX M/S provides an extremely quick steering response. Since the tire is available in high-profile sizes, its balance is overperforming most of its competitors.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S is a highly communitive tire. Well, that’s what it’s built for!

Cornering Stability

According to my research, the tire’s internal structure contains two reinforced steel belts. Well, when you combine it with a symmetrical pattern and reinforced sidewalls(they’re extremely stiff but flex perfectly under the heavy loads), the vehicle stands steel while cornering at high speeds.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S provides bellyful cornering stability. I strongly recommend it if you’re an inexperienced driver.

Wet Performance

Open shoulder blocks increase water evacuation capability

Unlike common knowledge, summer tires outperform all-season tires on wet pavement. In a word, all-season tires trade longevity with traction. Yet, Michelin Defender LTX M/S is an exception.

It is more accurate to evaluate wet pavement performance as high speed and low-speed performance. While low-speed performance is related to traction ability, high-speed performance hinges on hydroplaning resistance. Well, let’s evaluate them seperatly.

Wet Traction

Since all-season tires have a stiff compound, their traction capability is highly limited compared to summer tires. Therefore, manufacturers use exceedingly notched rubber to increase biting edges, herewith, traction.

At first blush, you might think Michelin Defender LTX M/S has a rib-type pattern. Well, theoretically, it’s true. Yet, these ribs are sectional, hence, this tire has a lug-type pattern.

While its lug-type pattern enables tons of biting edges, Michelin also increases the biting edges with 3D-Wave sipes.

As a result, Michelin Defender LTX M/S provides unique traction on wet pavement.

Note: While ribs have full-depth sipes, shoulder section sipes go through the half. Therefore, Michelin Defender LTX M/S’s shoulders wear evenly. So, uneven wearing isn’t an issue.

Hydroplaning Resistance

In the shortest, hydroplaning is the uncontrollable sliding on a wet surface. It’s caused by the water inside of the tread. When water fills the void area of the tire, if the tire has a low hydroplaning resistance, the tire loses contact with a surface, herewith, sliding occurs.

So, hydroplaning resistance is the water evacuation capability of the tire.

Due to its wide circumferential and lateral grooves and open shoulder slots, Michelin Defender LTX M/S has a huge hydroplaning resistance.

Winter Performance

As I’ve mentioned before, due to their stiff compounds, all-season tires lack traction. Therefore, they need notches. However, these notches generally aren’t enough to provide decent traction in winter conditions.

Well, Michelin Defender LTX M/S is an over-siped tire. Therefore, it’s a decent tire in winter. Though worth reminding, all-season tires can perform best above 7 Celcius degrees. Under this temperature, they get lost traction.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S isn’t marked with 3PMSF. That means it’s not capable to perform in severe winter conditions. Well, I don’t agree with them!

Light-Snow Traction

Light-snow traction is related to the same features as wet traction. Yet, a compound of the tire gets stiffer in winter conditions. So, traction capability decreases.

However, Michelin Defender LTX M/S is unusual. Michelin uses ‘Evergreen Compound’ for this tire. The most interesting feature of this compound is it doesn’t get too stiff in winter conditions. Well, I have to admit that, its light snow traction capability stays slightly behind compared to wet traction. Yet, this is an exceptional performance for a tire that doesn’t have a 3PMSF.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S has superior light snow traction. I strongly recommend it.

Deep Snow Traction

I haven’t tried this tire on deep snow. Yet, I read tons of positive comments about its deep snow traction. Well, in my point of view, it was not possible. So, I made deep research.

Since the tire can clean itself and have a relatively deep tread, it can handle deep snow. In that case, I still recommend taking it easy and limiting the snow depth to a maximum of 8 inches.

Here is a video for a better understanding.

Ice Traction

So, the tire has a bit stiff compound. However, its compact tread(less void area) bring some advantage. Since the ice performance needs compact tread, Michelin Defender LTX M/S is one of the best ice tires in its segment.

Though worth reminding, this segment has highly limited ice performance. Hence, it’s above average but not a perfect tire for ice.

You may watch the below video and see the slight sliding from time to time. Well, this amount of sliding is highly acceptable for me. The decision is yours.

Riding Comfort

The riding comfort of this tire may vary from user to user.

I have to admit that, the tire compound is stiff and its sidewalls are tough as hell. So, its ride seems stiff if you’re going to change from touring all-season tires.

For its segment, its riding quality is an alpha plus. Though worth reminding, these aren’t touring tires. If you compare its ride quality with touring tires, you’ll be disappointed.

I recommend Michelin Defender LTX M/S for light or heavy-duty work trucks and SUVs if you only do hauling or towing.

Note: Michelin Defender LTX M/S isn’t a touring tire. If the cozy ride is your priority, you may check this article out –> https://tireterrain.com/michelin-primacy-tour-a-s-review/

Road Noise

Due to its narrow tread and limited void area, Michelin Defender LTX M/S is a quiet tire at the beginning of its tread life. However, after half of its tread life, noise slightly increases. Well, this is caused by deep and wide sipes and it’s a bearable noise.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S is a quiet tire. Yet, it’s getting noisier when the weather gets cold.

Mileage

Tread life is where this tire shines.

Its strong advanced compound has an extremely high cut&chipping resistance. Hence, no matter how tough your surface is it doesn’t wear quickly.

Moreover, its symmetrical pattern design enables even wearing. So, if you follow the rotation time closely, I’m pretty sure that you can get 100,000 miles with this tire.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

Warranty

Michelin implements two different warranties for this tire.

Off-Road Performance

I guess people misunderstood the design goal of this tire. In fact, this tire doesn’t build for off-road. It’s capable for some off-road only for the working trucks. So, I can confidently say that if you’ll use this tire for rock crawling and damage the sidewall, the warranty will not cover your loss.

However, due to its strong sidewalls, it has the capability to handle mild off-road.

Dirt&Gravel Traction

Due to its durability, Defender LTX M/S can handle mild off-road with ease

So, dirt and gravel are the only surfaces this tire performs perfectly.

Due to its open sloth shoulders and sectional ribs, it can handle dirt and gravel with ease. Moreover, its extremely strong sidewalls don’t take any damage from sharp rocks or something.

I strongly recommend Michelin Defender LTX M/S for mild, occasional off-road.

Sand

Even though it’s a narrow tire, due to its blocky pattern, it can handle sand. Well, at least, it doesn’t dig deep and stuck into the sand.

This isn’t a beach driving tire but it’ll handle occasional sand. This tire doesn’t design for air-down driving.

Mud

It can evacuate the mud but if only mud’s not too deep. This isn’t a tire for adventure.

Rock Crawling

Its tough sidewall might make you think it’s a good tire for rock crawling. Well, it’s right but for a very short time.

The tire heats up so quickly when using it at low PSI. So, you may fail the bead if you expend driving time.

I don’t recommend this tire for a rock crawling.

Size Selection

Before we dive into selecting the right tire size, it’s essential to understand the tire standards that manufacturers follow.

Technical Standards & Regulations

In Europe, the tire standardizing organization is called ETRTO. In the United States, it’s The Tire and Rim Association (TRA), while in Japan, it’s the Japanese Automobile Tire Manufacturers Association (JATMA). Although there may be other organizations, they generally align with one of these three.

When it comes to passenger car tires, TRA designates them by placing the letter “P” in front of the size to indicate conformity to the TRA standard. On the other hand, ETRTO and JATMA do not use any letters, which can sometimes be confusing when determining which standard is being used.

For light truck tires, TRA uses the letters “LT” in front of the tire size, while JATMA places the letters “LT” after the size. ETRTO, however, uses the letter “C” after the size to indicate tires of this type.

In the realm of medium truck tires, ETRTO uses the letter “C” after the size to designate tires designed according to their standard. In contrast, TRA and JATMA do not use any letters in this context.

Now, here’s what’s essential: Tires with the same dimensions (size) may have different maximum load capacities depending on the standard being followed. So, it’s crucial to consider the relevant standard when choosing tires.

When it comes to load capacity designations, “SL” (Standard Load) and “XL” (Extra Load) are used for all passenger car tires, regardless of which standard is being followed. In the ETRTO standard, “Reinforced” is also used as an alternative to “XL.”

Load Range, on the other hand, is specific to TRA. ETRTO and JATMA use the term “Load Index.” While TRA references Load Indexes, it’s important to note that the values provided are approximate.

To sum it up, understanding the tire standards and designations is vital as they play a significant role in determining the right tire size and load capacity. By considering the appropriate standards, you can make an informed decision when selecting tires that meet your vehicle’s requirements.

How to Select the Right Tire Size Based on Your Requirements?

When it comes to selecting tire sizes for your vehicle, it’s important to keep in mind that most vehicles offer more than one original equipment size. Let’s take the 2019 Ford F-150 Lariat Crew Cab 4WD as an example. You have three different tire size options: 275/55R20 SL, 275/65R18 Load Range C, or 275/65R18 SL.

Note: I use Toyo Open Country AT3 for an example tire. You can use this link to see tire options for your vehicle and then make a comparison between the sizes:
https://www.discounttire.com/fitment/vehicle

If you don’t know your tire size: https://tireterrain.com/find-tires-by-vin-number/

Let’s focus on comparing the 275/65R18 SL and 275/65R18 Load Range C options for a more detailed comparison. Your decision should be based on your priorities. If you prioritize a smooth ride and better handling, the SL option is the way to go. On the other hand, if you value hauling or towing performance and tire longevity, the Load Range C option would be a better fit.

As a tire engineer, my perspective often revolves around load-carrying capacity. Generally, tires with higher load capabilities tend to provide a stiffer ride. However, there’s a bit of an illusion to consider. When you compare the two tires in the same size, the SL-rated tire may initially appear to have a higher load capability. But here’s the catch: P metric tires, like the SL option, need to be derated by a factor of 1.1 when used on a truck. Crunching the numbers reveals that the SL option actually has a lower maximum load capability. Additionally, it boasts a lower tread depth, which translates to better responsiveness.

The same principles I mentioned earlier also apply when comparing XL and E Load range tires. In summary, if your vehicle allows for Passenger Car or LT (Light Truck) tires, going with a passenger option will provide you with better on-road manners. However, if you find yourself venturing off-road frequently, own a working truck, or regularly engage in towing and hauling heavy loads, then LT tires are generally the better choice for your needs.

Couple of tips for towing;

  • Even though the load index of passenger car tires fits, when it comes to towing, sidewall stability is the issue. Hence, LT tires with Load Range C, D, or E provide better stability.
  • Generally, a load index higher than 119 is recommended for towing
  • Proper loading is important for even wearing. 60/40 rule should be followed. 60% of the weight should be on the front axle and 40%of weight should be applied rear axle of the trailer. Besides that, try to center load. Start with heavier ones if you gonna stack them up.

To wrap it up, selecting the right tires comes down to choosing the ones that align with your driving preferences and specific requirements.

Conclusion

Michelin Defender LTX M/S is one of the best tires in its segment. However, it’s a highway all-season tire. Hence, comparing it to touring or all-terrain tires isn’t fair. This tire is a good fit for those who need longevity, durability, and solid traction on every surface but the loose ground (deep snow, sand, mud).

Kumho Crugen HP71 Review

Updated: November 11, 2025 by Emrecan Gurkan Leave a Comment

Kumho Crugen HP71 is a touring all-season tire. This tire is specially designed for SUV and CUV drivers. Moreover, it’s a good fit for light-truck drivers who are looking for a cozy ride. It looks like 62 years of Kumho experience is finally associated with North American tough road requirements. Let’s dig into it and see if it’s worth it!

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Kumho Crugen HP71 provides unique dry and wet traction. Though, what makes this tire special is its handling(steering response and cornering stability) features. Moreover, Kumho Crugen HP71 provides long-lasting rubber and a smooth ride if you pick the right size(speed and load index) for yourself. However, it’s a slightly noisy tire and tread wear isn’t acceptable for heavy vehicles(above 4,500 lbs).

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Since most all-season tires can handle dry ground with ease, the dry performance of all-season tires isn’t a decision variable for most drivers. If we’re only talking about the traction and grip features, this might be right.

Though, as a former Bridgestone engineer, I evaluate dry ground performance under two separate headings. Dry traction and handling.

Dry Traction

Due to their over-siped patterns and sticky compound, all-season tires can handle dry traction with ease. However, things are a bit different for Kumho Crugen HP71.

So, when you see the tread, you can clearly see the high amount of sipes. However, compared to its competitors, Crugen HP71 has a relatively stiff compound. So, this doesn’t dramatically affect its dry traction. Moreover, it creates an advantage for better handling.

Kumho Crugen HP71 provides reliable dry traction.

Handling

Handling is where this tire shines.

Due to its robust center rib and symmetrical pattern design, it promises an extremely quick steering response. Moreover, its internal construction is amazing. This tire is almost as tough as an all-terrain tire regarding internal structure.

Its internal structure contains two steel belts that are reinforced by two spirally wrapped nylon cap plies. Well, that provides extraordinary cornering stability at high speeds.

Kumho Crugen HP71 is one of the best regarding handling. I strongly recommend it!

Wet Performance

Wide circumferential grooves are a good sign for a solid wet performance

Wet performance is a bit more complicated than dry performance. In that case, high-speed and low-speed wet performance should be evaluated differently.

While low-speed performance is related to traction, high-speed performance is completely related to hydroplaning resistance.

Let’s evaluate them one by one.

Wet Traction

While wet traction requires a compact tread, hydroplaning resistance needs a more void area to evacuate water. Hence, it’s hard to balance these two features.

So, I’ve already talked about the relatively stiff compound of Kumho Crugen HP71. This’s still on the table. However, Crugen HP 71 comprises tons of sipes. Even though some of them aren’t full-depth, still, this amount is enough to provide solid wet traction.

Kumho Crugen HP71 offers decent wet traction.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning is the water evacuation capability of the tire. In that case, the tread does all the work.

Due to its 4 circumferential tread grooves, full-depth horizontal sipes, and open shoulder design, Kumho Crugen HP71 doesn’t hold any water inside the tread. For this reason, hydroplaning isn’t something you may experience with this tire.

Winter Performance

Unlike the common knowledge, the winter performance of all-season tires is limited to only light-snow traction. In fact, a compound of all-season tires generally gets stiffer under the 7 Celcius degrees and loses its function. So, this equation is valid for Crugen HP71 also.

Regarding light-snow traction, it’s similar to wet traction. Its compound is a bit stiff and getting stiffer below 0 degrees. So, that causes a slight decrease in traction. Yet, I can confidently say that the traction level is exceedingly enough to get you out of unexpected situations.

Regarding deep-snow traction, its tread is not that shallow. Yet, the tire doesn’t comprise enough void area for trustworthy deep snow traction. So, I don’t recommend using it on deep snow. Though, let’s be a bit fair. I’m a bit perfectionist. It provides 6 out of 10 deep snow traction. Well, this isn’t enough for me.

Regarding ice traction, its stiff compound gets stiffer on the ice and the tire become as slick as snot. I don’t recommend using all-season tires on the ice.

If you’d like to read a detailed test report –> https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=278

Ride Quality

I have to admit that I’m pretty impressed by Crugen HP71’s ride quality. Well, when I made my research, I see its perfectly optimized internal structure. So, I was expecting this.

Due to its variable pitch technology and two polyester body cords, Kumho Crugen HP71 provides really satisfying ride quality. Its cords are durable and flexible. Hence, you’ll not even notice the bumps you passed.

Kumho Crugen HP71 offers a cozy ride.I strongly recommend it.

Road Noise

Regarding noise reduction, it’s not successful as it’s on ride quality. Though, for this price level, it’s exceptional.

Due to its sectional and robust center rib and shoulders, it makes slight noise at high-speed. However, the sound is minor. Probably, you’ll notice it after half of its tread life.

Tread Life

Treadwear was the only eye-opening for me. I was expecting a way much better life span.

Due to its symmetrical pattern, it wears evenly. This is a huge advantage. However, the tire is extremely heavy. Hence, even its stiff compound doesn’t provide long-lasting rubber if you have a huge SUV like Audi Q7 or Cadillac Escalade.

The tread life of Kumho Crugen HP71 is variable. If your vehicle is above 4,000lbs, don’t buy this product. Its tread life decreases significantly.

On the other hand, it’s a perfect tire for vehicles like Toyota Camry, and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

Warranty

Kumho offers 65,000 miles and 6 years treadwear warranty for this product. However, the mileage decrease to half if you use different sizes on the front and rear axle.

Uniformity Warranty: You can replace your tire with a new one if you experience any uniformity issue at the first 2/32 of its tread.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

The dry performance of all-season tires can be evaluated under two different categories. While one of them is dry traction and it’s kinda easy to provide, on the other hand, the other feature handling sometimes causes some issues due to expended void area and notched rubber.

Let’s see what Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra promises regarding traction and handling.

Dry Traction

Alenza AS Ultra has a new high-silica compound which means a huge grip improvement in wet and snowy conditions. Since dry traction needs way much less biting edges than snow and wet performance, all-season touring tires generally don’t have any traction issues on dry ground.

However, regarding Alenza AS Ultra, the over traction. Alenza AS Ultra is a heavy-weight tire. Hence, its rolling resistance is high. So, you may feel a slight delay while starting.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra provides unique dry traction and braking. However, its starting capability is average.

Handling

Handling can be evaluated under two different dimensions. Steering response and cornering stability.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra is molded to a symetric pattern. It has a 2-ply polyester casing under this pattern and this is a huge advantage for better cornering stability. Well, this tire is also designed for a light-trucks. Therefore, it needs tough sidewalls. As a consequence of strong sidewalls, it has decent cornering stability.

Regarding steering response, I can’t say it’ll be the same as your summer touring tires, though, it has a highly appreciated steering response for a heavyweight and over-siped tire.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra offers above-average handling features. Yet, It has a minor tramline issue. I’ll talk about it in the ride comfort section.

Wet Performance

Wet performance is where this tire is shown up. Its compound, tread design, all fits unique wet performance.

Since this tire can be used on different kinds of vehicles, I’m going to evaluate wet performance under two different layers.

Wet Traction

Due to its high-silica compound and over-siped rubber, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra offers alpha-plus wet traction.

However, this doesn’t mean it provides decent handling at high speed. Due to safe handling at high velocity, the tire needs hydroplaning resistance.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is the water evacuation capability of the tire. If the tire holds water inside of the tread, at high speed, you may lose contact with the surface and that might cause vital accidents. So, this part is highly important, especially for aggressive drivers.

Due to its wide vertical grooves and full-depth small horizontal grooves, Alenza AS Ultra offers highly stable hydroplaning resistance. I strongly recommend it if you’re living in a rainy region.

Winter Performance

Alenza AS Ultra's grip capabilty is hugeee!

The winter performance of all-season tires is misunderstood. All-season tires are built to perform under 7 Celcius degrees. So, their winter performance is highly limited compared to winter or all-weather tires.

So, winter performance can be divided into three. Light snow, deep snow, and ice. Normally, all-season touring tires only can handle light snow, yet, Alenza AS Ultra has a bit more.

Note: Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra doesn’t have 3PMSF marking.

Light-Snow Traction

Light snow traction is similar to wet traction. It’s related to notches and compound selection mostly.

Due to high silica compound and over-siped tread, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra can handle the light snow with ease. In that case, its rugged tread grooves helps it clean itself. Hence, this tire has an amazing light-snow performance.

Deep-Snow Traction

Deep-snow traction is where this tire stays slightly behind. Even though its extended void area and high angled inner rib sipes work well for deep snow, its tread depth is shallow for deep snow traction.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra has average deep snow traction. I don’t recommend using it on deep snow after half of its tread life(5/32”).

Ice-Traction

So, it’s not possible to reach decent ice traction with this kind of huge void area. However, Alenza AS Plus has highly angled inner rib sipes and relatively narrower shoulder grooves. So, its ice performance is superior compared to its competitors.

Since I don’t recommend using an all-season tire on ice, it can take you out of unexpected situations, though, please don’t try to use it as a winter tire.

Riding Comfort

Bridgestone tires are a bit bumpy. Yet, they're perfect for a long-range of rides

As a former Bridgestone engineer, I can confidently say that stiff ride is the general problem of Bridgestone tires. The durable internal structure of Bridgestone tires causes this issue. Yet, I take this trade the whole day long.

Well, Alenza AS Ultra has a twin steel belt that provides stability and the nylon-reinforced ply that improves the stability at high-speed. So, it’s a sturdy tire.

Its huge durability causes a bit of a lack of flexibility and flex ride. However, the real issue is different.

Due to its shallow tread depth and kinda fluffy shoulder compound, Alenza AS Ultra tends to tramline.

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra has a bit stiff ride.

Road Noise

Alenza AS Ultra uses the same technology that Bridgestone QuietTrack uses. This technology is similar to Pirelli’s noise reduction technology. The tire contains a thin foam layer and this layer decrease the noise frequency. Well, this is an advantage. However, I think this tire needs a bit more improvement.

Due to the wide void area ratio and high rolling resistance, the tire is a bit noisy. Yet, noise reduction tech pays its dues. Bridgestone Alenza Ultra isn’t quiet as a church mouse, yet, it totally worth sacrificing minor noise for huge winter traction.

Tread Life

The tire with low tread depth tends to wear more evenly

Just like Bridgestone’s President, Eric Seidel says customers want better wear life. So, it looks like wear life is what Bridgestone mainly focuses on for this tire.

Due to its relatively stiff and high-silica compound, symmetrical pattern, and high internal structure durability, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra offers one of the best wear life in the market. I strongly recommend it!

Note: The cut&chipping resistance of Alenza AS Ultra is highly acceptable. Though worth reminding, this isn’t an off-road tire. If you’ll use it off the road, your tread life might decrease.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

If you’d like to learn how to get maximum tread life:

Warranty

Bridgestone offers various warranties for this product.

Treadwear: 80,000 miles and 5 years

Uniformity: It’s valid for the first 2/32” of wear

Manufacturer Special Warranty: 90 days buy&try guarantee

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra Warranty Document: https://www.tirerack.com/images/pdf/warranty/BS0121.pdf

Fuel Efficiency

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra is a high-weight and high-rolling resistance tire. Therefore, it might improve fuel consumption.

Since I’m at the beginning of tread life, I didn’t observe any increase, yet, I think I’ll experience it soon.

Most tire sizes begin with modifier letters(P, LT, etc.) that identify the type of vehicle or type of service for which they were designed. Here is a perfect guide for reading tire size –> https://tireterrain.com/how-to-read-tire-size/

Conclusion

Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra is a perfect option for those who need solid winter traction and long-lasting rubber. Moreover, its wet performance is superior to most all-season tires in the market. However, it provides a bit stiff ride. Well, in my point of view, this trade is acceptable. I highly recommend this tire for light truck users who are looking for a smooth ride and SUV and CUV users who are looking for an alpha plus wet and light-snow traction.
