    TRIED & TESTED!

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a touring all-season tire that can be used on sedans, coupes, crossovers, and SUVs. Due to its vast product line(broadest of Uniroyal) and dirt-cheap price, it’s a popular selection inside the US. However, price and quality are generally proportional in the tire market. The excellent news, Tiger Paw Touring A/S is an exception. Yet, it isn’t a perfect tire. Hence, its defects may not meet your expectations. Let’s analyze this tire and see if it’s a good bet!

Continuous and thick center rib make this tire extremely communicative

As a former Bridgestone engineer, from my standpoint, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a trustworthy performance on wet and dry pavement. Moreover, due to its stiff compound, it’s a long-lasting tire. Furthermore, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a communitive tire and provides solid cornering capability(has unique cornering stability) while doesn’t sacrifice the quiet ride. However, it has a bit stiff ride and almost zero traction in winter if the tire doesn’t heat up.

Table of Contents

Dry Performance

Even though dry performance is easy to achieve, some all-season touring tires face traction and handling issues due to the stiff compound of all-season tires.

So, evaluating dry performance under three different layers is the easiest way to expose it.

While dry traction is the last one to worry about, cornering stability and steering response sometimes stay behind if the manufacturer is obsessed with ride comfort and traction.

Let’s see them one by one.

Dry Traction

Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a great tire if you’re living in a hot climate. Even though it has a stiff all-season tread compound, its highly notched rubber has tons of biting edges.

Due to its perfectly optimized sipe density and compact tread, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides decent dry traction. You might feel a slight delay in acceleration before the tire heat up. Though, it’ll disappear after 10-15 minutes of driving.

Steering Response

Steering response is related to tread design and tire weight as well. Since the tire weight has a minor effect on it, tread design will be my evaluation point.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a symmetrical pattern that is an extremely good sign for a quick response time. Moreover, its continuous and robust center rib makes the most work in that case. Since this tire works as a pivot, it doesn’t flex too much and transmits the comments quicker. Hence, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a highly responsive tire.

Cornering Stability

Unlike steering response, cornering stability is completely related to the internal structure. If the tire doesn’t have tough sidewalls, there is no way that you don’t feel that floating feeling.

Since Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is mostly available in high profile sizes, most people think it has poor cornering stability. Well, that might be true if the Tiger Paw Touring A/S doesn’t have one of the strongest sidewalls in the market(in its category).

Due to its extra two-ply polyester sidewall, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides steady handling while cornering at high speeds.

Wet Performance

Symmetrical Pattern Design

Unlike common knowledge, the wet performance of tires should be evaluated under two different conditions. At high speed and low speed.

At low speed, the only thing you must need is traction. Hence,  one of our evaluating points is wet traction. Wet traction covers break, acceleration, and start.

On the other hand, at high speed, the tire gets warm and the compound becomes fluffier. Therefore, the grip capability of tire increase significantly. So, the only thing left to worry about is hydroplaning. Hence, hydroplaning is the second evaluating point.

Let’s examine them one by one.

Wet Traction

Wet traction is related to compound stiffness and the amount of biting edges.

In this case, zigzag shoulder sipes and angled center sipes work perfectly. Moreover, the tire is heavyweight compared to its competitors. Hence, it heats up a bit quicker and slicks the ground way much better. So, in that case, I was a bit worried about the beat fatigue due to an over-heated tire. Well, I have checked and see the tire has an ‘A’ temperature rating. For a double-checked, I’ve made some research on the web and didn’t see any bead issue. I was relieved.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a unique traction capability on wet pavement. I strongly recommend it.

Hydroplaning Resistance

Hydroplaning resistance is basically the water evacuation capability of the tire. In this case, if the tread holds the water at high speed, the tire loses contact with the surface and the vehicle doesn’t respond to any input. This is called hydroplaning or aquaplaning.

Due to its 4 wide circumferential grooves, relatively wide horizontal grooves, and open shoulder slots, Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides trustworthy hydroplaning resistance.

Note: Hydroplaning is vital for a safe ride under the pouring rain. However, it might occur even with the best tire. Maybe you can’t prevent it but if you know what it is and how to deal with it, you can easily stay on the safe side.

Here is an extremely efficient guide about ‘How to Deal with Hydroplaning?‘ –> https://www.discounttire.com/learn/hydroplaning

Winter Performance

Unlike common knowledge, all-season touring doesn’t build to perform in winter. Well, due to their wide tread, grand touring all-season tires can handle light snow, and some of them even deep snow. Yet, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is an all-season touring tire. Though, it has a wide tread which is a good sign for winter performance.

So, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a highly limited winter performance. However, it can be still useful in some cases.

Light-Snow Traction

Light snow traction is similar to wet traction. However, in this case, the weather is cold, so, the compound is stiffer.

The compound of all-season tires can fittingly perform above 7 Celcius degrees. Below this temperature, the tire loses grip, herewith, traction.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has a stiff compound. Therefore, it might put you in trouble if you’ll try to leave for work on a snowy day. Yet, if you can heat the tires up, I’m pretty sure, they will provide decent traction.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S has limited light-snow traction. It can take you out of unexpected situations. Though, I don’t recommend them if you see snow for a couple of months.

Deep Snow Traction

Due to its robust shoulders and center rib, the tire can chew the snow. Yet, its stiff compound can’t bite any loose ground at all.

This tire doesn’t have enough void area for loose ground traction. Deep-snow isn’t its expertise.

Ice Traction

If I were you, I never use this tire on icy surfaces. The tire has a compact tread. Well, this is an advantage for icy grounds. However, it’s too stiff to bite slippery and icy surfaces.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S is a 3 season tire. I don’t recommend using this tire on ice or in severe winter conditions.

Noise

Its void area ratio is increasing after the half of its wear life

Due to their compact tread and generally rib type and continuous center rib, all-season touring tires don’t tend to make too much noise. However, some manufacturers sacrifice noise reduction to get better loose ground traction. Well, Uniroyal isn’t one of them.

Due to its continuous and robust center rib and optimized void area, Tiger Paw Touring A/S offers a quiet ride. However, its 3-D sipes enlarge as they wear. Hence, this tire can make some noise at the late stage of its wear life.

A side note here: Even though some tires tend to make noise because of their tread patterns, it’s still possible to keep your tire noise down.

I’m leaving a perfect explanation below from DiscountTire for those who need it;

How to Keep Tire Noise Down? –>
https://www.discounttire.com/learn/tire-noise

Ride Quality

Ride quality is affected by internal structure as well as tread design.

Regarding tread design, it promises a smooth ride. However, yet again, its stiff compound has a minor negative impact on riding quality. On the other hand, its internal structure is killing it. This tire has an extremely durable and tough internal structure. Hence, it has a bit bumpy and stiff ride. Yet, it won’t be bearable. If were you, I trade a slightly stiff ride for long-lasting rubber the whole day long.

Tread Life

Treadlife is where this tire shines. Even though it doesn’t have an 800 UTQG, due to its symmetrical pattern and true-contact tech(optimized contact patch) that enables the even wear, Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/S provides satisfying tread life. Especially for this price level. It’s a golden opportunity.

Getting maximum wear life from a tire is related to you as well as your tire,

Take-Home Points,

  • XL sizes tend to carry more load and offer better handling. Hence, they might be a better pick for bigger vehicles( XL vs SL tires)
  • Please pay attention to the load range and speed index. These metrics are essential if you expect decent tread life
  • There isn’t a bad tire in the market right now, you should just know what to expect from tires
